Another way to have African Americans – Sharecropping: Definition: When a landowner allows a person to rent a plot of their land and farm it in exchange for a share of the crop. The goal was to suppress the newly acquired rights of Black people. The KKK was responsible for many lawless and violent acts. *3 PLANS FOR RECONSTRUCTION: 1 - LINCOLN’S PLAN FOR RECONSTRUCTION: - Wanted all southern states to rejoin the Union quickly. - Wanted to end slavery. - Wanted equal rights for blacks and whites. - Wanted to help rebuild the south by providing help to poor whites and African Americans through the Freedman’s Bureau. - Southern states could be readmitted to the Union if 10% of white citizens took an oath. - Wanted to be lenient on the southern states in order to ensure that they rejoined the Union. 2 – Andrew Johnson’s Reconstruction Plan: - Wanted all southern states to rejoin the union quickly. - Accepted and enforced the end of slavery. - Allowed southern states to make their own “Rebuilding” laws. (Caused Radical Republicans to get angry). - Did NOT provide aid to former slaves. (Caused Radical Republicans to get angry). - Did NOT want African Americans to have rights. (Caused Radical Republicans to get angry). - Supported Black Codes (Caused Radical Republicans to get angry). 3 – Reconstruction under Radical Republicans. - Provided the following opportunities for African Americans: The right to vote (for males) Property ownership Education - - Legal rights Possibility of holding political office. Believed that the Federal Government needed to take control over Reconstruction and Freedmen. Required 50% of states to take an oath to be readmitted.
