CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
Around the world, there is growing interest in changing the way people
take care of themselves not just their bodies, but also their minds, spirit, society,
and planet. Most people would agree that a massage makes them feel good.
They believe massages can reduce muscle pains and stress, which can be a
heathier and better alternative than synthetic drugs or other forms of pain and
stress relief. It is a holistic approach that restores natural balance of the body,
thus, makes people feel better and helps them to perform their daily activities
effectively.
Many people also believe that going to a spa or massage center is just a
way of pampering or indulging themselves. It is a way of rewarding or treating
themselves after an exhausting task or work, or just a celebration and recognition
of their success. They see getting a massage as a practical approach to relax,
relieve tension, and de-stress.
In a consumer study presented by the American Therapy Association
(AMTA) in 2014, seventy-seven percent of individuals surveyed claim their
primary reason for receiving a massage was medical or stress related. These
reasons include pain relief, soreness, stiffness or spasms, injury recovery,
migraines, prevention, and general well-being.
As time goes by, reasons for getting a massage changes. Most people
believe that massage is not only a form of pampering. They perceive it to be

more than just for relaxation but also a great addition to a person’s health care
routine.
Further, according to Greenleaf (2013), a massage may help relieve mild
depression by releasing the tension, stress and anxiety that are often
accompanied by mild depression. It is believed that receiving physical touch can
change our bio-chemistry and lower our cortisol levels, our bodies’ stress
hormone. If our cortisol levels are too high on a regular basis it can lead to all
kinds of imbalance in our system, including feelings of depression. Massage
therapy can be a beautiful, natural way to regulate these hormone levels thus
creating a more relaxed, improved state in our overall mental and physical wellbeing.
There are an estimated of over 71,000 spa facilities worldwide, offering
such services as facials, body treatments, salon services, water-based
treatments, and health assessments – employing about 1.2 million people. In the
Philippines, as of end-2006, there were an estimated 87 spas operating in Metro
Manila alone, a figure 74% higher since 2003; and with those offering spa
services varying, as hotels and resorts jumped on the bandwagon, with 20%
spas located in hotels and resorts, and 76% of spas stand-alone day spas (Dela
Cruz, 2015).
Nowadays, a number of Spas and Massages are actively promoting and
working extensively on the further development of the industry by coming out
with specialized spa including eco-friendly spas, luxury spas, romantic spas,
pampering spas, stress management etc. In addition to this, to attract more

people and satisfy their demands, different spas are promoting variety of
wellness programs and treatments including healthy lifestyles, alternative
therapies, fitness programs, weight-loss treatments, detox diets, mineral and
thermal skin treatments, massage and yoga. The massage therapy has an
impact to tourism industry because people would love to travel also for the
benefit of their medical and health care. They usually visit a place where health is
being taken care of and at the same time enjoyed the attractions in such places.
Economic benefit also adds up to the impact of massage therapy because they
will pay taxes to the government and can encourage tourists to visit the place
(Atienza, K.L.T. et al).
According to International Spa Association (ISPA), an independent
research company specializing in the spa industry, Philippines hosts the largest
spas in terms of both indoor size and number of treatment. Filipinos are good in
preserving tradition as well as blending to others. Embracing to new stuff like spa
is finding never too hard, in fact crazing everywhere in the country, now being
enjoyed and patronized. Aside from the usual reason of clients going to Spa like
relaxation, other reasons also include health (recommended by physician),
beauty, detox and stress management, anti-aging and healthy skin, increase selfesteem and confidence, pain management, and a treat to self or others on
special occasions. Types of Spas already established in the Philippines are the
traditional Spas, Non- thermal Spas, Luxury Spas, Day Spas, and Retail Spas.
Based on the latest Annual Survey of Philippine Business and Industry
(ASPBI), there were 422 establishments engaged in the other service activities

sector, Almost 70 percent or 293 belong to personal services for wellness where
spa industry belong. The spa centers typically employ spa managers, spa
support staff, massage therapists, and spa hair stylists.
This study presents the status of spa business particularly the Banahaw
Heals Spa located in Balmores St. Koronadal City. Problems encountered by the
management, spa employee or attendants, and customers are identified to
provide useful recommendations not only on improving services rendered but
also giving ideas and ways to sustain the growing business. It would be a guide
for business decisions whether to expand, innovate and introduce, or adopt spa
products and services.
Rationale of the Study
Spa is known to be a place for relaxation for most of the millennial; thus, it
has been profitable for investors. The fast growth of the spas locally and
deregulation of many service industries has given the researcher the interest to
conduct the study.
One of the growing industries in the country is the health sector. According
to Herera, et. al. (2010) of the Asian Institute of Management, services under
health sector can be classified into either modern medical services or traditional
medical practices (such as massage, faith-healers, acupuncture, herbal clinics).
Due to poverty, most Filipinos in the provinces tend to subscribe to traditional
medical practices such as hilot (traditional Filipino massage), albularyo (Filipino
folk healers), and faith-healers. Traditional medical practices are also gaining
4
Graduate School

South Cotabato, Philippines
popularity among the higher income segment of the population. However, these
practices consist of herbal supplements, acupuncture, various Asian massages,
and well-being exercises.
The growing populace provides several opportunities to business in
different industries.
Increased number of buyers corresponds to increase in
demand. The global wellness movement opes doors for the wellness industry.
Other than the growing older, unhealthy population, heath systems are
failing to meet the challenges of caring for the health sector. The conventional
healthcare paradigm depicts a “sickness industry” which is characterized as
hospital-centered, fragmented and fragmenting care. This makes the medical
system fails or more and more people in need of such health care.
According to Eugenio, et. al. (2011), massage is the systematic
manipulation of soft body tissues through manual or mechanical means for
relaxation or therapeutic purposes. There are two general types of massage: oil
massage- a kind of massage that uses oil and other form of lubricants, such as
Swedish and Balinese massage; dry massage – massage that uses bare thumbs
and fingers. This occasionally uses powder instead of oil.
Spa industry is feeling bubbly with revenue that had reached more than
forty billion dollars in Southeast Asia. More people see spa as more than just a
place for relaxation but also it brings in profit (Downey, 2008). In order for spas to
be profitable business ventures in and of themselves, they need to be properly
planned and staffed, but of equal importance is the need for an exceptionally
strong, creative, on-trend and well-executed marketing plan (Singer, 2008).

The growing emphasis on wellness and sustainability, along with the
convergence of the health, travel and hospitality sectors, bears well for the
continued evolution of the spa industry. However, there are still many challenges
ahead. The global spa industry is still in its infancy and there is much work to do
to better define measures of well-being, document the benefits of spa therapies,
provide greater transparency and disclosure about the use of products and
services, and develop robust systems for evaluating spas ’financial, social and
environmental performance (Cohen & Bodeker, 2008).
Cohen and Bodeker (2008) said that spa concept goes far deeper than
pampering. Proprietors of both day spas and destination spas suggest that
wellness is a holistic process with many elements. To that end, some upscale
hotel spas are developing a wellness and prevention concept more familiar at
destination spas. Even within a busy hotel, the spa can be a place apart that
promotes health and wellness.
Although some guests seek out the full range of spa services, particularly
in destination spas, massages (including body wraps and facials) constitute the
largest portion of the day and hotel spas business at 73% in 2006 (Frietag,
2007).
The Philippines is the smallest market featured in spa Industry. However,
its spas had the highest number of treatment rooms on average. Over three
quarters of the spas were day spas. Strong growth is predicted over the next
couple of years. Thirty five percent (35%) of spas noticed there were more spas
opening in hotels, resorts and malls; an increase in the number of medical spas

was observed by thirty percent (30%) of respondents; twenty percent (20%)
stated spas were promoting more to tourists; An increase in natural products
used during treatments was noticed by twenty percent 20% of respondents
In South Cotabato alone, there is a wide following of alternative medicine
from stones to capsulated extracts of plants. This clearly indicates that people
nowadays are proactively responding in taking care of their health. With the
growing trend of proactively taking care of one’s health, there is an untapped
demand for spa and salon services in Koronadal City. This is based on the
concept that the services provided by spas and salons create a relaxing mode
and rejuvenation to an individual.
In Koronadal City, although there is a number of existing establishments
that offer massage services, there are no sufficient documents that are publicly
released which determine its status and current condition or socio-economic
contributions. This study will become one of the important references for other
researchers.
Understanding trends in the spa industry gives us foresight regarding
where things are headed, and also provides insight into the current state of the
industry itself (Cohen & Bodeker, 2008).
This study will be beneficial to Banahaw Heals Spa and to those people
who would like to invest in massage centers. By identifying the recent status of
the Spa industry in Koronadal City, the management and the investors will be
able to create strategic options to position their business well. It will guide them

as to what products and services to offer that would give them more opportunities
to grow and succeed. They will be informed of the trends in the local setting.
Data and other information from this study can be a good guide in
planning and implementing marketing strategies especially of the existing players
in the industry. They will be able to recognize significant issues that greatly affect
their operation. With this, they can formulate effective ways to minimize common
problems that exist in the establishment, and improve employee skills and
customer service.

THE INDUSTRY
Spa Industry
The spa/ beauty and wellness Industry comprises of face and body
treatments to maintain, improve and enhance the skin. It also promotes overall
relaxation and well-being through the services provided by the particular spa. A
spa may also sell products to its clientele.
It is an establishment for the promotion of well-being. Its main services
consist of massage and water applications, but may include steam, sauna,
exercise, nutritional and herbal therapy, dietary programs, yoga, meditation or
other professional services aimed at renewing the body, mind and spirit.
According to Global Wellness Institute (2014), the $74 billion in spa facility
revenues in 2013 were earned by 105,591 spas. Because of their large numbers,
day/club spas account for the highest share of spa revenues, followed by
hotel/resort spas.
Day/club/salon spas offer a variety of spa services (e.g., massage,
facials, body treatments, etc.) by trained professionals on a day-use basis. Club
spas are similar to day spas, but operate out of facilities whose primary purpose
is fitness. Salon spas operate out of facilities that provide beauty services such
as hair, make-up, nails, etc. (GWI, 2014).
Destination spas and health resorts offer a full- immersion spa
experience in which all guests participate. All-inclusive programs typically
include, in addition to spa and body treatments, a myriad of other offerings such

as: fitness, mind/body, special diets and cleansing, personal coaching, nutrition
counseling, weight loss, preventive or curative medical services, etc. (GWI,
2014).
Hotel/resort spas are located within a resort or hotel property, providing
spa services on an à la carte basis to hotel guests and outside/local guests. Spa
treatments and services generally complement a hotel stay or a wide range of
other activities at a resort (GWI, 2014).
Thermal/mineral springs spas include day-use spa facilities and
destination/health resorts that incorporate an on-site source of natural mineral,
thermal, or sea water into their spa treatments, as well as thermal and mineral
water bathing or recreational establishments that offer spa services such as
massage, facials, hydrotherapy, etc. (GWI, 2014).
Medical spas operate under the full-time, on-site supervision of a licensed
healthcare professional, providing comprehensive medical and/or wellness care.
(GWI, 2014).
Services
A wide array of services is offered by spa such as massages, foot spa,
steam bath and other spa treatments. Massages range from Swedish, signature,

customers. On the other hand, body packs exfoliation, body toning/contouring,
foot/face care fall under salon services or spa treatments.
Several hair styling services are provided by spa offering salon services.
Haircut, rebond, hair relax, and hair dye/color and other hair treatments are
services provided by spa to both male and female customers.
The services offered by spa industries are homogenous in nature.
According to the standard of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN),
the spa industry is offering the same services. The difference lies on how they
introduce and market as well as on strategies they implore in terms of pricing,
establishment, location, quality and marketing.

financing is basically from the personal funds of the owner. In case of

owner’s sources of financing include personal funds and loans. It

Porter’s Five Forces
Bargaining Power of Buyers.
The bargaining power of buyers is high in this industry because of
more selection of spas that customer can choose from. Customers have a
substantial influence and power over in this industry. The services
provided must be of utmost quality because many spas offer similar
33
Graduate School
NOTRE DAME OF MARBEL UNIVERSITY
Alunan Avenue, City of Koronadal 9506
South Cotabato, Philippines
services at similar prices, so one distinguishing feature is the quality of
services provided. Clients can switch over to another spa easily with little
or no cost. Because there are so many selections of similar
products/services at similar price levels, brand loyalty is difficult to
maintain.
Bargaining Power of Suppliers.
The bargaining power of suppliers in this industry is low. Suppliers
provide products for facial and body treatments. This may include bed
sheets, massage oils, creams, masks, facial products, machines, etc.
However, because of the fact there are so many suppliers offering
similar products at prices which are relatively the same in Koronadal, their
power is further reduced by the fact that the cost of the exact same
products is substantially cheaper purchased from other suppliers
Rivalry of Existing Competitors.
The rivalry among current competitors is high. The spa/beauty and
wellness industry is a fragmented one in which there are many small to
medium firms. These firms have low to medium market share. Many of
these firms are individual firms and some are chains. This means
customers have a wide variety of options because they can easily change
amongst competitors. This leads to an opportunity for price wars because
customers have more power and the fragmented firms need to give
customers an incentive to consume from that firm.
34
Graduate School
NOTRE DAME OF MARBEL UNIVERSITY
Alunan Avenue, City of Koronadal 9506
South Cotabato, Philippines
Threats of Substitution.
The potential for substitutes is low. Despite the innovative
technologies making massage machines, it is difficult for customers to
perform such treatments on themselves. It is often more relaxing and
convenient for a professional to perform body treatments on a customer –
the results are also more effective. The threat of substitution in this
industry is relatively low, particularly because many people have stress
from their daily lives and enjoys being pampered by services from this
industry.
Threat of New Entrants.
The potential for new entrants is high. Given the situation that there
are not relevant government barriers to enter the industry it is kind of easy
for a person to start offering the massage services which is a very
common situation in Koronadal City.
Key Success Factors
In any business there are key elements that contribute to its success.
There are those that focus more on the supply chain and operations. In a spa,
these are the keys to success;
1. Understand your market- it is essential that the prime movers in the
business have sufficient knowledge of the market. Knowledge must result
into clear understanding of the demographic, competition, traffic patterns,
35
Graduate School
NOTRE DAME OF MARBEL UNIVERSITY

South Cotabato, Philippines
buying strategies that are well-formulated where there is a thorough
understanding of the factors surrounding the entity.
2. Technical skills –beyond the equipment and strategic location, technical
skills that meet and exceed client’s expectation is vital. Quality and skilled
employees familiar with the services equipment and materials used in
providing the services are vital. Technical proficiency is an advantage that
a business can use to battle the stiff competition.
3. Communication – is a very important aspect in any organization. It
pertains to how the messages are relayed among members within the
organization as well as those outside the enterprise who affects the firm’s
existence. A good message to the customers causes repurchase of
services; but an effective message satisfies the customer by fulfilling what
it purports to convey. t is imperative to have effective communication to
facilitate feedback and encourage room for improvement.
4. Commitment to lifelong learning – change is inevitable. There is a rapid
development in business and in any industry. Important facts at present
may be obsolete in the coming years with the advent of technology and its
role in the business world.
5. Customer service - there is no such thing as being too attentive in a
highly competitive industry. Pampering the customer well creates a
competitive edge which the business can utilize in its marketing efforts.
Customer service defines how the business gives value to one of the most
important factors to its success.
36
Graduate School
NOTRE DAME OF MARBEL UNIVERSITY
Alunan Avenue, City of Koronadal 9506
South Cotabato, Philippines
6. Empathy – varied circumstances cause a customer to avail of the
products. It could be due to a special occasion, a fight with another
person, a stressful work week, or a routine activity, with this it is important
to remember that customers have peculiar situations, thus, employees
need to be sensitive to each client’s feelings. Be diplomatic and helpful
when they ask for an unflattering hairstyle.
7. Positive attitude – in both industries, it is a big factor how others see you
as it reflect your attitude towards providing such services. No, one ever
succeeded by walking around with a dark cloud above their head. Though
your personal life may be getting you down, continue to smile and be
positive. Clients are looking forward to being treated lavishly, and walking
out looking and feeling fabulous.

external environment of the organization.
STRENGTHS
1. Strong Brand Name.
The company is well known for its quality of service at
affordable price. This make the business position itself as one of
the most respective spas in the Philippines.
2. Presence of DOH Licensed therapist.
The spa is considered by the Department of Health (DOH)
as wellness which helps improve the health of individuals. To
ensure the health of the clients, Banahaw Heals Spa hired licensed
therapists to monitors the proper way in performing massage
therapy according to the regulation of DOH.
3. Increasing Sales and Net Profit.
The company continues to increase its sales from 25% for
almost three (3) years. This is because of the affordability and
discount offered by the company.
4. Strong Financial Position.
Strong Financial Position is one of the notable strengths of

and utilizes its assets to cover liabilities.
5. Therapists are all covered with social benefits even if on
percentage basis.
49
Graduate School

The company gives importance to all its employees by giving
necessary benefits to all regular and percentage basis therapist.
6. Excellent relationship within and among business owner and
staff.
When a work environment is efficient and friendly, the extent
of conflict within the workplace is reduced. If every employee feels
equal and important, he/she is more likely to work harder and be
more productive.
WEAKNESSES
1. Poor work ethics of therapist.
The therapists sometimes show lack of interest in performing
massage services. When the owner is not around, therapists are
not attentive or spend time on unnecessary stuffs.
2. Entangle with the rules and regulation of franchise contract.
The franchise agreement usually includes restrictions on
how the businesses run. This means that the company cannot
easily change some operational process or pricing unless approved
by the franchisor.
3. Limited parking space to cater clients.
Simple parking space shortage can cause a lot of problem
for the business. It is essential for a business to be equipped with
enough parking spaces to cater to the needs of the customers and
the employees.
50
Graduate School
NOTRE DAME OF MARBEL UNIVERSITY
Alunan Avenue, City of Koronadal 9506
South Cotabato, Philippines
4. Indirect employer - employee relationships as therapist are on
percentage basis.
The therapists salary is based on the services rendered
every day. The therapists are paid in commission manner which
mean they need to perform services to have a salary.
5. Slow response on walk-in customers.
The company cannot cater to walk-in customers because it
is fully-booked and or reservations are made every day. An
estimate of five clients a day was not catered by Banahaw Heals
Spa.
6. No organizational structure.
The spa has no organizational chart and only the owner can
do decision making. This may delay the operation of the business
or may create confusion on employees’ job responsibilities
Opportunities
1. Increasing Demand - Health and wellness continued to benefit from the
rising health consciousness of consumers and favorable economic
performance of the country, thereby resulting in positive growth in 2017.
Consumers gravitated towards products that they think are delicious and
healthy, and this has influenced new product introductions
2. Opportunity for growth -the spa industry is part of the health and
wellness industry and is a big and fast-growing business. This growth is
51
Graduate School
NOTRE DAME OF MARBEL UNIVERSITY
Alunan Avenue, City of Koronadal 9506

mostly because of the aging baby boomer generation and the increasing
interest of people nowadays on personal health and fitness.
3. Health awareness of individual- More than just a way to pamper one’s
self, spas are also fast becoming wellness providers. Spa-goers have
become more fitness-conscious and choose to spend more in meditation.
4. Growing middle class in Koronadal City- The rise of incomes by the
lower and middle-class markets offers a new pool of customers who are
choosing services for the first time.
5. Innovation of wellness industry- The dawning of the wellness culture
introduced the medical spa to help spa-goers maintain their youthful looks.
Medi-spas will proliferate to treat a variety of conditions, staffed by doctors
with various specializations.
THREATS
1. Growing Competition. Low capitalization encourages new
entrants into the industry.
2. Decreasing service fee. Competitors provide same service at
lower price
3. Legislation requiring DOH License for Massage therapist- This
is in accordance to the provisions of the Code on Sanitation of the
Philippines or Presidential Decree 856 (PD 856) and Executive
Order 102 (EO 102) s. 1999 Reorganization and Streamlining of the
DOH. It provides the CEMT the function to ensure that only
qualified individuals enter the regulated profession and that the

care and services which massage therapists provide are within the
standards of practice.
4. Consumer spending habit- changing consumer spending habit
might affect spa operation since the services are unessential and
can be neglected by consumers for prioritizing important matters.
5. Economic Downturn - economic downturns reduce household
incomes and lower investors’ and consumers’ confidence in the
economy
TOWS MATRIX
This enables to match external factors to internal factors to develop a new
strategy and these combined strategies are SO (Strengths-Opportunity)
strategies in which a certain organization uses its internal strengths to take
advantage of external opportunities, WO (Weakness- Opportunity)strategies that
aim to improve internal weaknesses by taking advantage of external
opportunities, ST (strengths-Threats) strategies that use a firm’s strength to avoid
or reduce the impact of external threats, and WT (Weakness-Threats) strategies
as defensive tactics directed at reducing internal weakness and avoiding external
threats. This matching of new strategies is important to implement a good
offense and defense since a good offense without a good defense leads to
defeat in competing with other ventures.

This strategy formulation tool summarizes and evaluates the major
strengths and weaknesses in the functional areas of a business, and it also
provides a basis for identifying and evaluating relationships among those areas.
Table 4 shows the IFE matrix of Banahaw Heals Spa. The total weighted
average score of 2.5 and below is considered weak internally. On the part of
Banahaw Heals Spa, IFE weighted average score of 2.74 implies a strong

Strategic Position and Action Evaluation (SPACE) Matrix
Strategic Position and Action Evaluation (SPACE) Matrix has been
materialized as a dominant instrument in formulating alternative strategies. This
matrix is based on four important elements called four quadrants of SPACE
Matrix. The first two elements are internal dimensions which are Financial
Strength (FS) and Competitive Advantage (CA) and the other two are called
external dimensions namely Environmental Stability (ES) and Industry Strength
(IS). The four quadrants framework of SPACE Matrix represents the suitability or
appropriateness of the strategies to be selected by a company such as
aggressive, conservative, defensive, or competitive strategies.

Based on the Figure 6, the Banahaw Heals Spa should use aggressive
strategy. Aside from Signature 5-in-1 Healing Massage, the spa introduced to the
market innovative services such as Netibo Healing, Turtle-Walk Massage, and
Mang Kepweng massage.
Internal –External (IE) Matrix
The IE Matrix is a strategic management tool which is used to analyze the
current position of the divisions and to suggest the strategies for the future.
The Internal-External (IE) Matrix is based on an analysis of internal and
external business factors which are combined into one suggestive model. The IE
matrix is a continuation of the EFE matrix and IFE matrix models.
60
Graduate School
NOTRE DAME OF MARBEL UNIVERSITY
Alunan Avenue, City of Koronadal 9506
South Cotabato, Philippines
The Internal-External (IE) Matrix is based on two key dimensions: the IFE
total weighted scores on the x-axis and the EFE total weighted scores on the yaxis. Each division of an organization should construct an IFE Matrix and an EFE
Matrix for its part of the organization. The total weighted scores derived from the
divisions allow construction of the corporate-level IE Matrix.
On the x-axis of the IE Matrix, an IFE total weighted score of 1.0 to 1.99
represents a weak internal position; a score of 2.0 to 2.99 is considered average;
and a score of 3.0 to 4.0 is strong. Similarly, on the y-axis, an EFE total weighted
score of 1.0 to 1.99 is considered low; a score of 2.0 to 2.99 is medium; and a
score of 3.0 to 4.0 is high.

IFE total weighted score : X axis = 2.74
EFE total weighted score : Y axis = 2.55
The IE Matrix in figure shows that the scores of the IFE and EFE matrices
of Banahaw Heals Spa are 2.74 and 2.55, respectively. The point of intersection
falls in cell 5 which indicates that Banahaw Heals Spa should maintain its current
position. Therefore, the company should adapt strategies focusing on
maintaining their actual market share such as market penetration and product
development.
Grand Strategy Matrix
Grand Strategy Matrix has emerged into a powerful tool in devising
alternative strategies. This matrix is basically based on four important elements:
Rapid Market Growth, Slow Market Growth, Strong Competitive Position, and
Weak Competitive Position.
These elements form a four quadrant matrix that can be positioned in a
way that selection of appropriate strategy is easily identified. It helps in analysis
of firms ‘current position and selection of best strategy in accordance with the
revealed competitive position and market place.
The quadrant one of the Grand Strategy Matrix is meant for those firms
which are in a strong competitive position and flourishing with rapid market
growths. Firms located in this quadrant are in excellent strategic position and
they need to concentrate on current markets and products.
Firms falling in quadrant two of the Grand Strategy Matrix are
characterized with a weak competitive position in fast growing market. The
62
Graduate School

present market position of these firms must click in the minds of the management
and they need to weigh up the firms’ present market place critically.
The quadrant three firms are operating in a slow growth industry with a
weak competitive position. These firms are prone to further decline which may
result possibly in liquidation.
Firms under quadrant IV are characterized as having a strong competitive
position but are operating in a slow growth industry. These firms have to quest
for the promising growth areas and to exploit the opportunities in the growing
markets as they possess the strengths to instigate diversified programs in
growing industries.

Banahaw Heals Spa belongs to quadrant I which means the business has
excessive organization resources, then backward, forward, or horizontal
integration may be effective strategies. It can take risks aggressively when
necessary.
Boston Consulting Group (BCG) Matrix
The BCG matrix is a framework created by Boston Consulting Group to
evaluate the strategic position of the business brand portfolio and its potential. It
classifies business portfolio into four categories based on industry attractiveness
and competitive position. There are four quadrants into which firms brand are
classified:
Dogs. Holds low market share compared to competitors and operate in a
slowly growing market. The Strategic choices are Retrenchment, divestiture and
liquidation.
Cash cows. Cash cows are the most profitable brands and should be
“milked” to provide as much cash as possible. The cash gained from “cows”
should be invested into stars to support their further growth. According to growthshare matrix, corporates should not invest into cash cows to induce growth but
only to support them so they can maintain their current market share. The
Strategic choices for cash cows is Product development, diversification,
divestiture and retrenchment
Stars. Stars operate in high growth industries and maintain high market
share. Stars are both cash generators and cash users. They are the primary
units in which the company should invest its money, because stars are expected
64
Graduate School

to become cash cows and generate positive cash flows. The Strategic choices
for stars are Vertical integration, horizontal integration, market penetration,
market development and product development.
Question marks. Question marks are the brands that require much closer
consideration. They hold low market share in fast growing markets consuming
large amount of cash and incurring losses. The Strategic choices for question
marks are Market penetration, market development, product development and
divestiture.

Relative market share can be calculated in terms of revenues or market
share. It is calculated by dividing one’s own brand’s market share (revenues) by
the market share (or revenues) of his/her largest competitor in that industry.
This means that the Banahaw Heals Spa has overtaken its competitors in
terms of profit and market share which leads to good operation and greater
opportunities.

Based on the evaluation of the result of all matrices used in strategy
formulation framework, the appropriate strategies that Banahaw Heals Spa
needs to adopt are market penetration, market development and product
development strategies.
Market penetration is a growth strategy that focuses on selling more to current
customers or sell products to new customers in the current target markets of the
business. It involves strategies such as bundling, advertising, lowering of prices
and volume discount.
Market development strategies involve selling existing products to new
market which may involve new geographical markets, new product dimensions,
new distribution channels and different pricing policies to create new market
segment.
Product development strategies are growth strategies that require
changes in business operations, including a research and development function
that is needed to introduce new products to existing customer base. It requires
the business to asses customer needs and a clear path for brand extension.
Quantitative Strategic Planning Matrix
The Quantitative Strategic Planning Matrix is a strategic tool which is used
to evaluate alternative set of strategies. The QSPM incorporate earlier stage
details in an organized way to calculate the score of multiple strategies in order
to find the best match strategy for the organization.
There are four main columns in QSPM, the left column lists down the key
internal and external key factors which are the same as in EFE and IFE matrix.
67

Adjacent column to key factors is Weight (relative importance of the factor) which
holds the numeric value obtained from EFE and IFE matrix weight column. The
next to weight is AS which stands for attractive score which assigns priority to
key factors using the numeric value 4 for most importance and 1 for least
importance and the last column TAS (Total attractive score) is the value
calculated by multiplying weight by AS. One thing important to note for each
strategy is to separate AS and TAS value added in the table, weight remains the
same for all set of strategies mentioned in QSPM. The topmost shows the
strategies are compared in the QSPM matrix, the following table illustrate the
structure of QSPM matrix.
