Carnival Games during Japan Summer Festival
1. Ring Toss - ‘Bingo or Wanage’
-
Ring toss is a game where players toss rings to the prize you want to get. Players should
shoot three rings in a row, any connecting rings and win a prize. The prizes are usually
presented in numbers attached to each pillar fixed on the floor.
2. Traditional Japanese Shooting - ‘Shateki’
-
Gun-shooting, or called as shateki in Japanese, is a game where you use a toy rifle to
target the price you want and shoot at it. The bullet is made of cork, and if you hit your
target, you’ll get it as a prize.
3. Yo-Yo Tsuri
-
Yo-yo fishing, or called as yo-yo tsuri in Japanese, is a game where you fish a “yo-yo”
using a string made of paper with a hook attached to its end. The yo-yos are usually water
balloons with rubber strings with long loops attached. The yo-yos are pretty heavy, and
the paper strings aren’t waterproof, so you have to fish the yo-yos quickly and carefully.
4. Katanuki
-
Similar to the ‘Sugar Honeycombs’ game from Squid Game. A game that uses a
rectangular candy mold made of sugar, flour, and a pre-shaped mold that forms shapes,
such as animals, stars, trees, flowers, and more. The player uses a needle to engrave the
outline on that mold and separate the shape from the mold. Although it’s made of sugar
and flour, the candy mold is not used for eating but for playing, and it’s pretty easy to
crack, so players have to be very careful.
5. Guess How Many
-
All you need is a jar and lots of small items to put in it. For the item, you can choose beans,
candy, pom-poms, rocks, shells — anything really. You’ll also need some paper scraps
and pencils so people can write down their guesses.
-
Before you put everything into the jar, make sure you’ve counted how many things are in
there so you can pick a winner. This carnival game is easy enough that people of all ages
can participate, since all they have to do is make their best guess for how many objects
are in the jar. To make things really fun, let the person with the closest guess keep the jar
and its contents.
