We know that new things are revealing, and old things are of great value. This is how the Bible compares the teacher who teaches with divine wisdom: 52 He said to them: That is why every learned scribe in the kingdom of heaven is like a householder, who brings out new things and old things from his treasure (Mt. 13:52). When the Bible is studied with the illumination of the Holy Spirit, we can find great treasures. This is deeper and more common in the life of a legitimate Bible teacher. This book collects part of those precious pearls of the Bible, for the edification of the people of God. I hope this contribution is a blessing for you. Joel Perdomo 5 TREASURES 6 TREASURES OF THE BIBLE TREASURES OF THE BIBLE ____________________________________________________ 1. THE DIVINE REVELATION God has also made himself known in the Bible, which reveals his plan of salvation for mankind. Every Christian must submit to the authority of the Bible. No one has ever heard of the plan of salvation except through the Bible. It means that everyone who has heard about Jesus and the gospel message has done so through the Bible. There is no other source of revelation of the message of salvation. This is good and safe for Christianity, as it tells us that God has made himself known in the Bible, that he is the only source of authority as the Word of God. An unalterable rule of biblical interpretation is not to take away from, or add to the Bible, under judgment of condemnation: “Cursed is he who does not confirm the words of this law to do them. And all the people will say: Amen ”(Deut. 27:26). “I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy in this book: If anyone adds to these things, God will bring on him the plagues that are written in this book. And if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his part of the book of life, and of the holy city and of the things that are written in this book "(Rev. 22: 18-19). But it also points out that the revealed things of the Bible are for us and those that are hidden belong to God: “Secret things 7 TREASURES belong to Jehovah our God; but those revealed are for us and for our children forever, so that we may fulfill all the words of this law” (Deut. 29:29). Even though the Bible says to cry out to God and that He will show us great and hidden things (Jr. 33: 3); It does not refer to things that alter or take away from the Bible; but to things that confirm it. Many Christians and teachers succumb to the temptation to go beyond what the biblical text reveals. This has given rise to the majority of heresies within Christianity, because they have come out of ourselves because of ignorance. By disregarding the biblical warning, many falls into the devil's snare, as their own pride leads them to alter or take away the Word of God. This is one of the traps most used by the devil to confuse God's people. Satan takes advantage of the naivety of neophyte Christians to deceive them and also seduces Bible teachers when they go beyond what is revealed, believing they know everything. 2. FAITH Faith is one of the great mysteries revealed in the Bible by God to humanity. It is through faith that we communicate with God. We will not know exactly why God established this means to communicate with Him. 8 TREASURES OF THE BIBLE Perhaps God feels great satisfaction that his creatures recognize the Creator, without having seen him, only through faith reflected in the wonders displayed by him in all creation. Creation testifies about the Creator: 1The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament announces the work of his hands (Ps. 19: 1). The Bible says that just because of the testimony of creation, no one will have an excuse to deny God: 19 Because what is known about God is manifest to them, since God has revealed it to them. 20 For his invisible things, his eternal power and deity, become clearly visible from the creation of the world, being understood through the things made, so that they are without excuse (Rom. 1: 19-20). The truth is that, according to the Bible, faith in God is the most valuable treasure that a human being can possess on earth. 1. It is more precious than gold or money (1 Pet. 1: 7). 2. The human being can give everything he has (visible), to obtain the kingdom of God (the invisible, Mt. 13: 4446). 3. The invisible comes first than the visible (Rom. 1:20). The Bible says that: "Without faith it is impossible to please God" (Hb. 11:6). That implies that no one can find God or have light through the biblical text if he does not approach God with 9 TREASURES faith. God claims faith because he has provided the means for human beings to voluntarily recognize him. By saying that he is a volunteer, we acknowledge that believing in God or not is a personal decision. It does not depend only on God, who provided the means for us to believe in Him, but on the decision of each person. We said that faith is a revealed mystery because it has its foundation in the only God, the God of the Bible. Faith comes from God, but it is manifested or revealed to those who seek him with faith and believe him with all their hearts. After the fall of the human being into sin, the relationship with God deteriorated further and our distance from God makes it more difficult for us to find a harmonious relationship with our Creator. Our evilly inclined human nature constantly teeters between faith and doubt (James 1: 6). It is a fight that must be dealt with daily. Even as Christians we fight this battle. Jesus rebuked his disciples many times for his lack of faith (John 20: 27-29). He also urged them to have faith in God (Mr. 11:22). 3. THE UNKNOWLEDGE OF AUTHORITY Perhaps one of the most important themes in the Bible, which can prevent us from making great mistakes in the Christian life, is the knowledge of the authority of God. 10 TREASURES OF THE BIBLE The usurpation of divine authority The tribe of Levi was chosen by God to minister in the temple, they were not given land when it was distributed among the tribes of Israel. His inheritance was tithes and offerings (Num. 18:24). The Levites ministered in the temple, but the high priest had exclusive powers that did not belong to them. But the proximity to the temple and the cult made the Levites believe that they could minister the offices of the high priest. They were filled with pride and Satan tricked them into rebelling against the high priest (Aaron) and against Moses, the leader that God had placed as authority: 1 Korah the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, and Dathan and Abiram the sons of Eliab, and On the son of Pelet, of the sons of Reuben, took people, 2 and rose up against Moses with two hundred and fifty men of the sons of Israel, princes of the congregation, of the council, men of renown. 3 And they gathered together against Moses and Aaron and said to them, enough of you! For all the congregation, they are all holy, and in their midst is Jehovah; Why then do you rise above the congregation of Jehovah? (Nm. 16:1-3). Moses told them about their mistake in wanting to usurp the priesthood: 8 Moses said more to Korah: Hear now, sons of Levi: 9 Is it little for you that the God of Israel has separated you from the congregation of Israel, drawing near to him so that you may minister in the service of the tabernacle of Jehovah, and stand before him the congregation to minister to them, 11 TREASURES 10 and what brought you near, and all your brothers the sons of Levi with you? Do you also seek the priesthood? 11 Therefore you and all your company are those who gather against Jehovah; for Aaron, what is he, that you murmur against him? (Nm. 16:8-11). Moses tried to mediate with them, so that they would avoid divine judgment, but they would not listen to him: 12 And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab; but they answered: We will not go there (Num. 16:12). Most serious of all was that the priests in their rebellion dragged out 250 renowned leaders of the people of Israel, whom Moses had placed in authority. The Bible says that the rebellious Levites were swallowed up by hell with their entire family, and the rebellious leaders were consumed by the fire of God's wrath: 32 The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them, their houses, all the men of Korah, and all their possessions. 33 And they, with all that they had, went down alive to Sheol, and the earth covered them, and they perished from the midst of the congregation. 35 Fire also came out from before Jehovah and consumed the two hundred and fifty men offering the incense (Nm. 16:3233, 35). Submission to secular authority Clothed in the cloak of a supposed spirituality, many Christians, ignoring biblical teachings, become arrogant with secular authorities. The Bible commands that the Christian must submit to earthly authorities: 1 Let everyone submit to higher authorities; because there is no authority except on the part 12 TREASURES OF THE BIBLE of God, and those that exist have been established by God (Ro. 13:1). The Bible teaches that all authority comes from God, He is the one who originates it. The text goes further and warns that whoever resists authority resists God himself and brings condemnation: 2 So whoever opposes authority, resists what God has established; and those who resist bring condemnation for themselves (Ro. 13:2). God does not justify the Christian who opposes authority. Rather, he is under divine judgment. The apostle Peter points out: 13 For the Lord's sake submit yourselves to every human institution, whether to the king or superior, 14 and to governors, as sent by him to punish evildoers and praise those who do good. 15 Because this is the will of God: that by doing good, you silence the ignorance of foolish men (1 P. 2:13-15). It should be noted that there are bad authorities and others that try to be just, each one bows where he wants, but the Bible warns that they must be respected, because God is the one who removes kings and sets up kings (Dan. 2:21). Governors will give an account to God for their governments, but our duty is to respect them. The only thing that should not be obeyed to a secular authority is when they order to deny Jesus as Savior (Acts 5:29), but even this must be done peacefully, with humility and respect. It must be remembered that the aforementioned apostles (Paul and Peter) suffered persecution from secular governments, but 13 TREASURES they endured it with courage out of love for their Savior. (Hch. 5:41). 4. GOOD INTENTIONS ARE NOT ENOUGH BEFORE GOD Sometimes we believe that just by doing something for the cause of God, we are pleasing him; without taking into account that, if we do not do it in obedience, it will not please God. Rather, this could backfire and cause your wrath from God. Here we present some biblical cases. Gideon and the Ephod Israel lived times of spiritual crisis during the time of the kings or the judiciary, that was due to the fact that each king did what he wanted, and the people were like sheep without a shepherd. At that time, Gideon (a judge of Israel) made an ephod, which was part of the sacred ornament that the high priest wore on his body, bathed in many precious stones. Gideon was not called to make this garment to have it in his house, since it was exclusively for the high priest's dress (Ex. 29: 5). This good idea of Gideon (to build an ephod) perhaps in order to restore the priestly ministry in this time of spiritual crisis, was a cause of perversion in Israel, as the people used it as an amulet for idolatry: “And Gideon made of them an ephod, which he kept in his city of Ophra; and all Israel prostituted themselves behind that ephod in that place; and it was a stumbling block to Gideon and his house" (Jc. 8:27). A good intention that was not done in obedience to God, ended up prostituting the people of Israel. 14 TREASURES OF THE BIBLE Uzza and the ark of God As part of the defeats that the people of Israel suffered because of their disobedience, the Philistines took away the Ark of the Covenant that contained the tables of the Law and was adorned with cherubim. But the Philistines returned the ark because God's judgment had fallen on them, because of the ark. When the ark was returned by King David to Israel and the people rejoiced, a man named Uzza (in charge of driving the carriage) touched the ark to help because the oxen slipped and he died: “When they reached the era of Nacon, Uzza stretched out his hand to the ark of God, and held it up, because oxen stumbled. And the fury of the Lord was kindled against Uzza, and God struck him there for his rashness, and he fell there dead by the ark of God." (2 S. 6:6-7). How is it possible that Uzza died for wanting to help the ark not fall and break? Why didn't Uzza's good intention count as a good deed before God? It is very imperative to learn that what pleases God most is our obedience, not the actions themselves. It is not enough to do things for God, you have to do them in obedience. The ark of the covenant was a sacred instrument that was in the most holy place of the tabernacle and only the high priest could approach it because of the presence of God. Uzza, could not touch the ark because it was sacred and for that reason she died. It is foolish to believe that we please God just by doing something for his sake, regardless of whether that function corresponds to us to do it in the kingdom of God. 15 TREASURES Saul and the sacrifice of the anathema God ordered King Saul to destroy Amalek, because God had placed them under anathema, along with all their possessions (Ex. 17:14). Saul was an ambivalent man and with pressure from the people, he decided to forgive the animals of Amalek with the excuse that he would give them as a sacrifice to God: 21 But the people took from the spoil flocks and herds, the first fruits of the cursed, to offer sacrifices to the Lord your God at Gilgal. 22 And Samuel said, Is the Lord as pleased with burnt offerings and victims, as with his obeying the words of the Lord? Certainly, to obey is better than sacrifices, and to pay attention than the fatness of rams (1 S. 15:21-22). It is necessary to mention that God put under the anathema or destined for destruction, those things that he judged as sin. These animals and all the possessions of the people of Amalek were contaminated with the wickedness, theft, idolatry, and all sin of the Amalekites. For this reason, God could not accept these sacrifices as an offering. On one occasion, David said that he would offer nothing to God, that it would not cost him (1 Cr. 21:24). This passage is one of the most memorable in the Bible regarding the sacrifices that we can offer to God, without obedience. Paradoxically, our good intentions can turn into our worst sin. That was the case with Saul, and we must learn from that lesson. 16 TREASURES OF THE BIBLE 5. THE DIVINE AND THE HUMAN VISION Knowing how God sees things, compared to our limited human vision, is critical to understanding the divine character revealed in the Bible. The following verse gives us an outline of the greatness of God, compared to our own: 8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, said Jehovah. 9 As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts more than your thoughts. (Is. 55:8-9). Our limited human mind, affected by the fall, fails to fully understand most of the things that pertain to the spiritual world, that of God. This ignorance limits us and causes us many losses. The Apostle Paul has been one of the most knowledgeable men of the Christian era. About our limitation in the revelation of eternal things, he said: 12 Now we see in a mirror, darkly; but then we will see face to face. Now I know in part; But then I'll know how I was known (1 Co. 13:12). The simplest Christian who has ever gone to heaven with God surpasses the wisest theologians on earth in knowledge. Just seeing and knowing heavenly things outside of this sinful body makes us perfect in all respects. It is for this reason that Jesus said that the smallest in the kingdom of heaven was greater than John, implying that not even the greatest man on earth, as John 17 TREASURES was at that time, could be compared to the smallest who has entered the sky: 11 Truly I say to you: Among those born of women no one greater than John the Baptist has risen; but the least in the kingdom of heaven, the greater is he (Mt. 11:11). Living in this sphere of limited spiritual knowledge, compounded by human fall into sin, we distance ourselves from the knowledge of the power and Word of God. This affects us as human beings, even as Christians. In such a way, that we do not get the most out of the things we live daily, due to lack of knowledge, which is the cause of the failure of the people of God and of humanity in general (Hos. 4: 6). While human beings focus on the basic needs of life, food, health, housing, etc., God has a higher vision than ours. It is not that these things are not important to God, it is just that there are others more important, such as the eternity of the soul. God lives in a spiritual atmosphere that allows him to know the priorities of being, in a perfect way. Although we think that our daily needs and crises are the most important things in our life and that God must act as soon as possible on our behalf to solve them, it is not necessarily what God thinks. It may be that the perfection of our being is the most important thing to God at that moment. 18 TREASURES OF THE BIBLE So, while we despair in tribulations, illnesses, etc., sometimes God has a plan beyond our limited and even wrong way of looking at things. This sad limitation causes us anguish, sadness, disappointment, etc. In the Bible we have the case of Job, a man who was perfect in his generation and who God made him pass various tests to perfect his life. Usually, at the time of testing, we only see the pain and our vision is clouded in such a way that we cannot see the divine plan. This causes us great sadness and disappointment. Sadly, our natural and carnal reaction to the trials of life is that of Job's wife telling him: 9 Then his wife said to him: Do you still retain your integrity? Curse God and die (Job 2: 9). Instead, Job had knowledge of God and had developed a relationship with God that allowed him to have greater insight into the spirit world. In the midst of the pain, he said: 10 And he said to her: As any foolish woman usually speaks, you have spoken. What? Will we receive good from God, and will we not receive evil? In all this Job did not sin with his lips (Job. 2:10). On another occasion Job said: 21 And he said: Naked I came out of my mother's womb, and naked I will return there. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; be the name of Jehovah blessed. 22 In all this, Job did not sin, nor did he attribute any nonsense to God. (Job 1:21-22). 19 TREASURES Job is a great example of what it's like to see beyond our limited natural mind. Pain and tribulations did not quench his faith. He gave glory to God, even in the midst of his trial, because he was certain that God knew what was happening to him, even though he did not understand why he allowed it. If we try to increase our knowledge of God and know his priorities for the life of the human being, which will always be directed towards the eternal salvation of the soul, rather than the quick solution of temporal things, we will have gained a lot of ground to understand God at the same time. time of the test. 6. WORSHIP AND PRAISE The Christian is a worshiper twenty-four hours a day. We were created for the glory of our Father: 6 to the praise of the glory of his grace, with which he made us accepted in the Beloved (Eph. 1: 6). All creation was made to give glory to God (Job. 38: 7). The Christian constantly worships God because his body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. The Christian worships by thanking God for a new day, by walking daily in obedience to the Word of God, when he serves, when he forgives, when he greets sincerely, when he prays, when he fasts, when he tithes, when he preaches, when he pays his debts, when he gives glory to God in everything, etc. Worship is not an action; it is a lifestyle. 20 TREASURES OF THE BIBLE When the Christian matures and walks in obedience to the Bible, the only thing that he can offer to God, of himself, is praise from his lips. Praise is a freewill offering: 15 So let us always offer to God, through him, the sacrifice of praise, that is, the fruit of lips that confess his name (Heb. 13:15). Not all Christians know how to sing, but we can all open our lips to God in praise. Praise expresses our gratitude to God. He does not demand that we praise Him, praise is our freewill offering. The Bible says: 19 speaking among you with psalms, with hymns and spiritual songs, singing and praising the Lord in your hearts; 20 always giving thanks for everything to God the Father, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ (Eph. 5: 19-20). The Christian's praise reflects his gratitude to God. This is important to know in order to be aware that all things are done by God by his mercy and we as benefactors, the only thing we can do in the end is praise him. Our praise is voluntary. The rest of things we do in obedience to the Word of God, because everything that the Christian can offer to God he has received before from his hand as David said: 11 Yours is, O Jehovah, the magnificence and the power, the glory, the victory and the honor; because all things that are in heaven and on earth are yours. Yours, O Jehovah, is the kingdom, and you are exalted above all. 14 21 TREASURES For who am I, and who are my people, that we could voluntarily offer such things? For everything is yours, and what we have received from your hand we give to you (1 Chron. 29:11, 14). For that reason, it is that in heaven we are constantly worshiped, because the only thing we can offer God of our own free will is praise. The cherubs constantly praise God in heaven and the twenty-four elders have harps in their hands to worship God (Rev. 4: 8, 5: 8). Christian praise is powerful. In heaven it is valuable because angels praise God because they see him, but the Christian worships out of faith and in gratitude for redemption. The angels have not been redeemed from sin, they cannot give that kind of praise to God, which is unique among those redeemed from sin and which causes joy in the heart of God. That is why the Bible says that when God rejoices, we are strengthened: "For the joy of the Lord is your strength" (Nh. 8: 10b). Praise unleashes the power of God, for when we praise His Name, even in the midst of sinful conditions that reign on earth, God is pleased with our faith shown in praise. Praise anticipates victory, because we praise God not because everything is okay, but in faith, knowing that he will turn all things for the good of those who love him (Rom. 8:28). 22 TREASURES OF THE BIBLE In the Bible there are examples of great victories won, only through the praise of his people. Such is the case with the walls of Jericho, which were torn down while the people praised God. Human weapons or strategies were not necessary in this war. The walls were torn down by the power of God, while the people praised God (Js. 6: 1-5). The same thing happened when God commanded Jehoshaphat to keep his weapons and face his enemies with only praise to God (2 Chron. 20: 14-22). That same power of God through praise Paul and Silas experienced when they praised God despite being imprisoned for the gospel's sake, their praise reached heaven and God opened the prison doors for them (Acts 16: 24-26). The power of God is unleashed in favor of his children when they praise him. God dwells in the midst of the praise of his people (Ps. 22: 3). The only thing that the Christian can give God of himself is praise, because it is voluntary. Everything else, we give in obedience to his Word, because we have received it. When God's people praise God with integrity (Ps. 33: 1), He pours out his glory in the midst of praise: 1 Shout joyfully to God, all the earth. 2 Sing the glory of his name from him; put glory in his praise of him (Ps. 66: 1-2). 23 TREASURES That glory was experienced by the singing Levites as they praised God in the temple: 14 And the priests couldn't be there to minister, because of the cloud, because the glory of the Lord had filled the house of God (2 Chron. 5:14). The genuine praise of God's people becomes a weapon of spiritual warfare when it pleases God. Sometimes it is enough to praise God to obtain great victories. Praise anticipates our trust in God and shows that nothing depends on us, but absolutely of God. 7. THE SPIRIT AND THE WORD These two topics are among the most important in terms of the knowledge of God. But sometimes the relationship between the two is unknown. Usually, in the Church we have both extremes, Christians filled with the Spirit or Christians filled with the Word of God, but scarcely of because we ignore the importance of both. Usually, when a newly converted Christian is filled with the Holy Spirit and lacks knowledge, he takes it out on those who have it and judges them as carnal. It is common for the Christian who is filled with the Holy Spirit or has some supernatural experience with God, underestimates the knowledge of the Word of God, because he ignores its importance. Many Christians do not know that gifts and ministries stand strong through the years when there is a solid foundation in biblical knowledge. Otherwise, it is almost certain that they will 24 TREASURES OF THE BIBLE have great losses, or their ministries will be destined to wane or fail (John 2: 8: 11; 1 Cor. 9: 26-27). On the other hand, there are Christians who are filled with biblical knowledge, but are unaware of the manifestations of the power of God. They think that only the knowledge of God is the most important thing, but they ignore that God is a living God, who listens, responds and manifests his power in the lives of his children. Not in vain, Jesus made the Sadducees (teachers of the Law) see their ignorance about the two things, namely: Of the knowledge of the Word and of the power of God: 29 Then answering Jesus, said to them: You err, ignoring the Scriptures and the power of God (Mt. 22:29). These are two sources must go hand in hand to have a solid foundation in the Christian faith. When there are shortcomings in either of these two areas in the life of the Christian, the danger of making serious mistakes is latent. On the one hand, when the Christian only seeks the filling of the Spirit and neglects the knowledge of the Word of God, he is constantly prone to falling into any heresy. The Bible says that God's people perish for lack of knowledge, not just for lack of power: 6 My people were destroyed because they lacked knowledge (Hos. 4: 6 a). When the Christian does not cultivate his spiritual life and only fills his head with knowledge, he can be confused for not having the light of the Holy Spirit to illuminate him in his learning of the Word of God and of the knowledge of the power of God. 25 TREASURES If these two ways of knowledge, the spiritual and the knowledge of the word of God, are not strengthened, they can be used by the devil to deceive the Christian. The Bible says that these are two sources by which the Christian can be confused: 2 That you do not allow yourself to be easily moved from your way of thinking, nor be disturbed, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as if it were ours, in the sense that the day of the Lord is near (2 Thess. 2: 2). The right thing to do is to strengthen both sources in order to have a solid foundation in the Christian faith. The Holy Spirit and the Word are like the two wings of a bird that, if you cut one of the two, will not be able to fly. As simple as that. Sometimes Christians are filled with pride because they have a deep knowledge of the Bible. Others, because they know and have experienced the power of God, but both are unaware that they need both: The power of God and the knowledge of the Word of God. The Christian who only cultivates knowledge will not be able to understand by his own carnal mind the great mysteries of the Spirit. And the Christian who neglects the study of the Word of God, will commit elementary errors that will quench the anointing of the Spirit in his life and can fall into heresies and confusion that can finally lead to the perdition of his soul. 8. THE GIFT AND THE GREATER MINISTRY The Bible points out that the greatest of all gifts is love: 1 If I speak human and angelic languages, and I have no love, I become like resounding metal, or clanging cymbal. 26 TREASURES OF THE BIBLE 2 And if I had prophecy, and understood all mysteries and all science, and if I had all faith, in such a way that I moved the mountains, and I have no love, I am nothing. 3 And if I distribute all my goods to feed the poor, and if I give my body to be burned, and have no love, it is of no use to me (1 Cor. 13: 1-3). There is no gift or talent greater than love. It is for that reason that it is useless to enjoy great ministries, gifts or divine talents in the kingdom of God, if they are not ministered with pure and true love. Just as love is the greatest of all divine gifts, the greatest of ministries is service. But nobody wants to serve, we all want to be served. Our ignorance of the Bible makes us believe that the major ministries are those that are protagonists. We long for great gifts and ask for recognized ministries but forgetting that the one who serves is the greatest in the kingdom of God. This became clear when Christ's own disciples were discussing who would be greater in his kingdom. Jesus said to them: 25 Then Jesus, calling them, said: You know that the rulers of the nation’s rule over them, and those who are great exercise authority over them. 26 But it will not be so among you, but whoever wants to become great among you will be your servant, 27 and whoever wants to be first among you will be your servant; 28 as the Son of Man did not come to 27 TREASURES be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many (Mt. 20: 25-28). Jesus began by explaining to them how in the secular world, the powerful rule over others. Then he explains to them that in his kingdom it is not like that that whoever wants to be the greatest must be the servant of all. Tremendous lesson for the children of God, but nobody wants to hear the Master. Nobody wants to serve on earth and be great in eternity. We all long for recognized gifts and ministries, unaware that the one who serves is the greatest in the kingdom of God. 9. THE TRUTH AND THE LIE Wrong judgments Misjudging the facts is one of the most frequent mistakes that we Christians in particular, and humanity in general, make. The ignorance of the history and the erroneous judgment of the facts can cause us great losses, even that of our own soul. Satan is cunning and uses ignorance of the truth to deceive man. Jesus said: 32 And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free (John 8:32). The Christian should not repeat what others say, he should search the Scriptures, because that was the mistake that the Jewish religious of the time of Christ made, they allowed themselves to be carried away by their 28 TREASURES OF THE BIBLE religious fanaticism and forgot to search the Word of God (Jn. 5: 39). In addition, we must be careful who tells us the story, not only because they may be wrong or be anachronistic stories; They can also misjudge them, at their own convenience. There is a secular saying that goes: "Repeat a lie a hundred times and it will become a truth". That is a strategy of Satan. Most sects, false religions and misinterpretations are loaded with false stories that, when studied carefully and in depth, are exposed. There are few teachers guided by the Holy Spirit, who dedicate themselves to investigate in depth the truth of things. Other scholars make wrong judgments of the facts, because they do not have the illumination of the Holy Spirit. They believe in God, but they don't believe in his miracles. Their minds are full of knowledge, but their hearts are empty of love and the power of God. They do not enjoy the illumination of the Holy Spirit, so they cannot understand the sacred text either. The Bible not only says that we must know the Scriptures, but it also says that we must know the power of God. This is what Jesus said to the religious of his time: 29 29 Then answering TREASURES Jesus, said to them: You err, ignoring the Scriptures and the power of God (Mt. 22:29). The historical facts related in the Bible and the secular ones can be twisted by the devil to deceive the human being. With the passage of time the truth has been increasingly diluted. The Lord said to give we the task of investigating: 16 Thus saith the Lord: Stand in the ways, and behold, and ask for the old paths, what is the good way, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your soul (Jr. 6:16 a). In ancient times these ancient paths referred to the teachings of the Law, today they refer to the truth of the gospel taught by our Lord Jesus and his holy apostles. Is it a lie to promise something and not deliver, or not arrive at the agreed time? If the person had any inconvenience, it is not a lie. It would be a lie if he planned it in his heart. The downside is that he doesn't apologize for failing, even if it was unintentional. Every lie is a lie, but not everything is a lie. 10. IN LOVE WITH THE POWER OF GOD God is almighty, that's one of his many attributes. But the power of God is only a manifestation of all the immeasurable greatness of him. It implies that the manifestations of God's power only represent part of Him. God possesses the power. Human beings are the product of the great creative power of God, for that reason, we are surprised 30 TREASURES OF THE BIBLE by the great wonders of him. However, the power of God can be addictive for the Christian. It implies that there is a possibility that we will fall in love with the power of God and forget about the God of power. It happens to many Christians, but sometimes we are not aware of it. Perhaps a simple way to understand when the Christian is out of focus on God and more obsessed with his power, is the example of a child with his father. Perhaps the father gives his son toys, money or sweets, there is nothing wrong if it is controlled. But suppose there comes a time when the son is no longer interested in loving his father; but only in what he gives her. The same thing happens to us Christians when we focus more on the manifestations of the power of God, than on the God of power himself. We must love the God of power more than the power of God. Miracles are only manifestations of the power of God; but God desires to have a healthy relationship with his children, that we do not seek him just for the interest of seeing his power manifested from him; but because we love him. Just as a father on earth longs to be genuinely loved by his children, God wants to feel loved by his children. God does not want us to seek him only for what he gives us; rather, because of who He is. 31 TREASURES 11. EAGERNESS IN MINISTRY The Lord established ministries in His Church to edify the saints and give them spiritual growth in the knowledge of the kingdom of God (Eph. 4: 11-12). Ministerial work is spiritual work, as Christ said: 17 And Jesus answered them: My Father works until now, and I work (Jn. 5:17). Ministries of the Word are time consuming and sometimes the work of a minister of God seems endless. It is pleasing to God that a minister spends himself serving in his kingdom, but it must be in spiritual work (preaching, praying, fasting, studying the Bible, etc.). Ministerial service should not be confused with church-related activities that can be justified as spiritual, but end in an eagerness for things that do not produce fruit in the kingdom of God or that could be delegated to others. Ministers must know how to balance their time so as not to neglect their spiritual lives and become anxious. Neglect of the spiritual life is a constant danger in ministers. Sometimes we focus so much on church or ministry activities and even justify that they are for the glory of God, that we forget about God. It is a paradox. In the Bible we find the case of the apostles of Christ. They were entrusted with the ministry of preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God. The apostles had learned to serve, by the example that Jesus had transmitted to them (Mt. 20:28), but at a certain point they neglected the ministry of preaching for the 32 TREASURES OF THE BIBLE service at the banquet tables that were offered in the early church (Acts 2:46). The apostles warned in time that, by serving at the tables, they were neglecting the ministry of the Word that had been entrusted to them and for the first time they established deacons or servants to take care of that ministry, while they dedicated themselves to prayer and prayer. preaching: 2 Then the twelve summoned the multitude of the disciples and said: It is not fair that we leave the word of God, to serve tables. 3 Seek then, brethren, among you seven men of good witness, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we will entrust with this work. 4 And we will persist in prayer and in the ministry of the word (Acts 6: 2-4). It is not that minister should not serve others at all, serving is the essence of the call to ministry. It's just that this biblical example of the apostles should serve as a warning to God's ministers who get involved in so many church activities that ultimately, they don't have time to be alone with God and end up neglecting their spiritual lives. God must be the first thing in the life of a minister. All ministers of God should beware of this eagerness only for church-related activities; But at the end of the day, they take away the time that God demands so that they are in his presence and prepare to do ministerial work. 33 TREASURES The ministerial eagerness is one of the great traps that a minister can fall into, thinking that, by doing many things for God, they are pleasing him at the expense of neglecting his intimate communion with God. God's work requires divine direction, and this is sought by setting aside time to be alone with God. Moses went up the mountain alone with God when he revealed the Law to him (Ex. 24:12). Daniel was alone with God when God gave him the visions (Dan. 10: 1-4). Jesus constantly retired alone with his heavenly Father for fellowship (Matt. 14:23). It is not just about setting aside a special time with God, when we are already overwhelmed by problems and we can't take it anymore, it is staying in constant communion with God at all times. The Church of Ephesus fell into this error, they worked hard for God, but had neglected their intimate relationship with God: 2 I know your works, and your hard work and patience; and that you cannot bear the wicked, and you have tested those who claim to be apostles, and they are not, and you have found them to be liars; 3 and you have suffered, and you have been patient, and you have worked hard for my name's sake, and you have not fainted. 4 But I have it against you, that you have left your first love (Rev. 2: 2-4). We must learn to work hard in the kingdom of God, without neglecting our life of communion with God. The key is to recognize when we have toiled. Jesus said that apart from Him we can do nothing (John 15: 5). 34 TREASURES OF THE BIBLE 12. LOVE TOWARDS ENEMIES Turn the other cheek Jesus said: 39 But I say to you: Do not resist the one who is evil; Before, whoever strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also (Mt. 5:39). Although this assertion of Jesus is sometimes taken lightly, He meant it literally. The natural reaction of the human being to the offense is defense and even aggression. The Christian will not be judged by the damage he receives, but by his reaction, and we must take care of that. Jesus taught that you should not resist the bad guy, that is, confront him. He goes on saying: 40 And whoever wants to sue you and take off your tunic, let him also have your cloak; 41 And anyone who forces you to carry a load for a mile, go with him two. 42 Give to the one who asks you; and whoever wants to borrow from you, do not refuse (Mt. 5: 40-42). Few Christians want to obey the teachings of Jesus and follow his great example of humility in waging war through peace and mastery of character in the face of aggression. The Bible goes further and says that we should love our enemies: 44 But I say to you: Love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who abuse and persecute you (Mt. 5:44). 35 TREASURES God wants his children to love with his perfect love, which makes it rain on good and bad. Just as He loved us, unconditionally, forgiving all our sins out of love, no matter how serious our debt. Jesus said: 45 So that you may be children of your Father who is in heaven, who makes his sun rise on the bad and the good, and makes it rain on the just and the unjust. 48 Be ye therefore perfect, as your Father which is in heaven is perfect (Mt. 5:45, 48). Esteban's example Stephen was a faithful disciple of Christ and a martyr of the early church who gave his life out of love for Christ, like most of Jesus' apostles. Stephen was hated by the enemies of Christ and killed just for loving Jesus. This humble servant of Christ imitated Jesus and practiced his teachings by forgiving his executioners at the time of his death: 59 And they stoned Stephen, while he called and said: Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. 60 And kneeling, he cried out with a loud voice: Lord, do not hold this sin against them. And having said this, he slept (Acts 7: 59-60). Stephen imitated Jesus, who forgave those who killed him: 34 And Jesus said: Father, forgive them, because they don't know what they're doing. And they divided their garments among themselves, casting lots (Lk. 23:34). 36 TREASURES OF THE BIBLE Jesus gives here a reason why we should forgive our enemies; it is because they ignore what they do when being used by Satan and his demons. Although, the main reason is that we must forgive, just as God forgave us (Mark 11: 25-26). The Bible points out that our fight is not against human beings, but against forces of evil (Eph. 6:12). It is dangerous for us to fall into the trap of Satan by hating and fighting against human beings and not against the forces of evil. 13. THE DUTY TO FORGIVE Forgiveness is the ultimate expression of love. The Christian has a divine mandate to forgive his neighbor. It is not an option; it is a duty founded on the great love with which we were forgiven. We deserved to die because of our sins and Jesus paid the debt freely. Therefore, we have the mandate to forgive, just as we were forgiven: 14 For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you; 15 but if you do not forgive men their offenses, neither will your Father forgive your offenses (Mt. 6: 14-15). As can be seen in the previous verse, forgiveness is a divine commandment that does not allow excuses. There are no arguments that can justify unforgiveness. We must forgive simply because Jesus forgave us and freed us from eternal 37 TREASURES damnation. This forgiveness is founded on divine love and must be the fruit of the love received. 14. THE LOVE OF GOD AND THE NEIGHBOR The Bible commands to love our neighbor as ourselves: 18 You will not avenge yourself or bear a grudge against the children of your people, but you will love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord (Lev. 19:18). This commandment was already prescribed in the Law, but the Law allowed revenge (Ex. 21:24). Jesus puts a twist on this commandment under the Covenant of Grace, by commanding that we love, as He loved us. That is, we must not only forgive our neighbor, but even give our life for others, if necessary, just as He gave it for us (1 John 3:16). The Law allowed revenge, but the love with which Jesus loved us, by giving his life for us to forgive us, makes the commandment new: 34 A new commandment I give you: that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 By this all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another (Jn. 13: 34-35). The Bible says that we children of God will be known by our love for one another. Love is the basis of the relationship with God and neighbor. No gift, talent or ministry is useful if it is not developed imbued with divine love. The Bible says that he who 38 TREASURES OF THE BIBLE does not love is in darkness: 9 He who says he is in the light and hates his brother is still in darkness. 10 He who loves his brother abides in the light, and in him there is no stumbling. 11 But he who hates his brother is in darkness, and he walks in darkness, and he does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes (1 John 2: 9-11). Just as the basis of the relationship of the children of God is love and love must motivate all action, Satan has also created a system of hatred that has affected all of humanity. Even Christians have a hard time loving the way God wants us to love. The Bible is clear in pointing out that, although we profess to love God in a thousand ways, it will not be seen if we do not love our neighbor: 8 He who does not love has not known God; because God is love (1 John 4: 8). The Christian can live deceived in his faith if he believes he loves God, without loving his neighbor: 20 If anyone says: I love God, and hates his brother, he is a liar. For he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen? 21 And we have this commandment from him: He who loves God, love his brother also (1 Jn. 4: 20-21). It is not what we say or think that determines whether we truly love God, but love for God and our neighbor. The Bible is clear in pointing out that whoever hates his brother is a murderer: 39 15 TREASURES Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer; and you know that no murderer has permanent eternal life in him. 16 In this we have known love, in which he laid down his life for us; we too must lay down our lives for the brothers (1 John 3: 1516). The Bible says that even getting angry and offending others with words is cause for eternal damnation, if there is no true repentance before dying: 22 But I tell you that whoever gets angry with his brother will be guilty of judgment; and whoever says: Fool, to his brother, will be guilty before the council; and whoever says to him: Fatuo, will be exposed to hell fire (Mt. 5:22). Like Cain, our offerings, praises, fasts, prayers, and service will not be pleasing to God, if there is unforgiveness. The Bible says: 23 Therefore, if you bring your offering to the altar, and there you remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your offering there in front of the altar, and go, reconcile yourself with your brother first, and then come and present your offering. 25 Agree with your adversary quickly, while you are with him on the road, lest the adversary hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the bailiff, and you will be thrown into prison (Mt. 5: 22-25). As you can see, the subject of love is simple, but it is one of the most important in the Christian life. God is love and he who does 40 TREASURES OF THE BIBLE not love has not known God. If you don't have love, ask God for it. 15. THE DECEPTION OF WEALTH The Bible points out that the love of money is the root of all evil: 10 The Bible points out that the love of money is the root of all evil: The text says that it is the love of money, not money itself. But the love of money arises from money itself, so the thread is very finite, between one thing and the other. The important thing according to the Bible is not to love the riches of this world. This passage warns that some Christians, lusting for money, turned away from the faith and suffered many pains. It is known that the riches of this world are in the hands of Satan, that is why he offered them to Jesus (Lk. 4: 5-7). He is the prince of this world (John 14:30). That means that the temporal riches of this world compete with the eternal riches of heaven that God has prepared for his children. Jesus said: 19 Do not layup treasures for yourselves on earth, where moths and rust corrupt, and where thieves break into and steal; 20 but layup treasures for yourselves in heaven, where neither moth nor rust corrupt, and where thieves neither break through nor steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will also be (Mt. 6: 19-21). 41 TREASURES The Bible says that the Christian cannot serve God and money at the same time: 24 No one can serve two masters; for he will either hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money (Mt. 6:24). Jesus can't be wrong. The Christian cannot pursue the riches of this world. There are Christians that God blesses them materially, precisely because they do not have money in their hearts and they are stripped of the material, being generous with the work of God. The minister of God must have what is necessary to be able to serve God, he must not have accumulated wealth. God's money must be to serve God. About God's ministers, the Bible says: 3 not given to wine, not quarrelsome, not greedy for dishonest gain, but kind, mild, not greedy (1 Tim. 3: 3). The Bible teaches that God's minister should not be greedy or greedy. The Bible shows that greed is the sin of money idolatry (Col. 3: 5). Gifts corrupt the Just The Bible warns of the danger of gifts, which sometimes corrupt and buy ministers of the Gospel: 7 Oppression certainly makes the wise stupid, and gifts corrupt the heart (Ecc. 7: 7). 42 TREASURES OF THE BIBLE The prophet Balaam is a typical case of greed for money. This prophet of God was filled with greed when he saw the camels laden with the rewards, they would give him for cursing the people of Israel (Num. 22). Finally, he did not resist the temptation and out of greed he turned to the enemies of Israel, where he died as a vile soothsayer (Js. 33:22). That case stands as a historical monument of warning to those who do business in the Gospel (Rev. 2:14). Furthermore, the case of Balaam shows how a true prophet of God can be deceived by Satan. When Naaman the Syrian (leper man) He went to the house of the prophet Elisha, the prophet was ordered to send a messenger, he was not allowed to go out to meet him. Without a doubt, God directed him that way so that he would learn to take care of his heart and not be corrupted by the gifts they could offer him. That was something that perhaps God told him on that occasion or that Elisha had already learned as a prophet of God. Miracles are not for sale and God had taught Elisha to take care of his heart. It was not out of pride or indifference that Elisha did not go out to meet the general. God did not allow Elisha to meet or greet the Syrian general, to take care of his heart. Giezi (Elisha's servant and messenger) he fell into greed when he saw the great gifts. He did not resist the temptation and 43 TREASURES asked on behalf of Elisha, lying. Because of that sin, Naaman's leprosy passed to him and his family (2 Kings 5:27). There is a finite thread between faith and greed. Sometimes when you believe you have faith to achieve gifts or material things, your faith has unknowingly been abandoned along the way and turned into greed, arrogance, and pride. That is a subtle trap of Satan that few realize. Satan knows how to corrupt the beautiful gifts that God has placed in his children to pervert them, taking them to an extreme and turning them into arrogance or greed, without the Christian realizing what he has become. The Bible warns that the human heart is evil (Jr. 17: 9). Divine gifts can be corrupted, and many sins can be justified in the name of faith, sometimes unnoticed by the Christian. The Christian can pervert what God has entrusted to him, if he uses his gifts for himself or carries out projects that are not to glorify God. The danger is that it is difficult to notice when things have gotten out of hand, to become personal gain or ego satisfaction. Only humiliation can lead us to recognize the mistakes of our own heart. 44 TREASURES OF THE BIBLE 16. PRIDE Pride comes from Satan. He was the first to be filled with pride because of the beauty and wisdom that God gave him in heaven (Ezekiel 28: 14-17). The opposite of pride is humility. Jesus was the highest example of humility (Phil. 2: 7-8). He said: 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am meek and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls (Mt. 11:29). Pride is a silent enemy, striking at the moment of greatest relaxation. Usually, it does so immediately after the Christian gains a great victory in God. Satan knows that after a victory the warrior is confident, that is when he attacks. He whispers in your ear that the victory obtained was because of your qualities, virtues, knowledge or other attributes or talents that you possess, but he does not remind you that it was God who did it for his glory and for his mercy. Pride attacks when you are alone, so that you do not suspect who is speaking to you and do not blame demons or people for your thoughts. Pride sticks its dagger in your back and makes you believe that you have something more special than others, that is why God uses you more than others. Pride comes from Satan and is an inferiority complex disguised as false greatness. Pride was born in the heart of Satan, who 45 TREASURES wanted to be equal with God from the beginning (Isa. 14: 13-14), and he still believes that he can achieve it. Pride comes from a complex, because Satan has lost his beauty and has become a horrible horror (Ezek. 28:19; Rev. 20: 2), but he still tries to hide it by presenting himself as an angel of light (2 Cor. 11:14), because he does not accept his defeat. In every iota of pride, God sees the spirit of Satan, the Cherub who revealed himself against God in heaven. God hates pride because it represents evil. The Christian must guard his heart from his pride and bring all glory to God, because He does not share his glory with anyone (Isa. 42: 8). If Luzbel perverted his heart, being in the very presence of God (in heaven), we must protect our heart so as not to fall into pride. God is not going to demand that we give him the glory, it is our duty to give it to him. Most of those who fall into the pride trap don't even realize it. The blindness is so great that they believe they are pleasing God with their great ministerial projects that are not directed by God. Satan is the owner of the wealth of this world and if we do not have spiritual discernment, we will confuse the devil's offers with divine blessings, and even legitimate blessings can be perverted. Satan made that offer to Jesus, but he rejected it because he knew it was a hoax: 5 And the devil took him to a high mountain and showed him in a moment all the kingdoms of the earth. 6 And the devil said to him: To you I 46 TREASURES OF THE BIBLE will give all this authority, and their glory; because it has been given to me, and to whom I love I give it. 7 If you, prostrate, adore me, they will all be yours. 8 Answering Jesus, he said to him: Get behind me, Satan, for it is written: The Lord your God shall you worship, and him alone shall you serve (Lk. 4: 5-8). Only the humble of heart will be able to see their own pride and will be able to reject it and push it away from their hearts. But most of those who are attacked with this spirit, will not even be aware of his great error, because they will justify it by saying that his work is for the glory of God, when deep down it is for the glory of his own. own egos. The Bible says that the heart is wicked and deceitful, that only God knows it: 9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and wicked; Who will know it? 10 I am the Lord, searching the mind, testing the heart, to give to each one according to his way, according to the fruit of his works (Jr. 17: 9-10). Therefore, what proceeds is only to humble oneself before God. It is the only thing that can free us from pride. The Bible says: 8 O man, he has declared to you what is good, and what Jehovah asks of you: only to do justice, and to love mercy, and to humble yourself before your God (Mi. 6: 8). Humiliating yourself before God is voluntary. He respects the will and free will of every human being, and even his children. 47 TREASURES WAYS TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM PRIDE: 1. Recognizing God as our sovereign creator and owner of our lives. 2. Voluntarily acknowledging our human weakness and using it to our advantage. God expects us to use our weakness wisely, to recognize our need and absolute dependence on Him. 3. Maintaining a balanced self-esteem. Paul said: 3 I say, then, by the grace that is given to me, to each one who is among you, not to have a higher opinion of himself than he should have, but to think of himself with sanity, according to the measure of faith that God distributed to each (Rom. 12: 3). 4. Considering others as superior to ourselves in something and learning from them: 3 Do nothing out of contention or out of pride; rather with humility, each esteeming other as superior to himself (Phil. 2: 3). 5. Recognizing that everything we have we have received from God, and we should not boast in anything: 7 Because who distinguishes you? Or what do you have that you have not received? And if you received it, why do you boast as if you had not received it? (1 Cor. 4: 7). 48 TREASURES OF THE BIBLE 6. Recognizing that we brought nothing when we came to this world and that we will take nothing with us: 7 Because we have brought nothing into this world, and without a doubt we will be able to get nothing (1 Tim. 6: 7). 7. Become aware of the great danger of pride and identify it as soon as it touches the doors of our heart to reject it. 8. Be willing to listen to the advice of others. Even from the criticisms we can get something positive, because sometimes they point out things that may be true. 9. Do not accept flattery in your heart. It is inevitable that they will say nice words to us about the talents that God has given us, but we must refuse to receive the glory of such things in our hearts. 10. Do not refuse to think that we could have pride in our hearts, that is the worst mistake against pride. In our fallen nature, all human beings are or tend to pride in some way. 11. The human being who believes that he is humble is no longer so. Sometimes, it is humbler who recognizes his own pride and not the one who thinks he is humble, without being so. 12. Reject the worst of pride, which is false humility. This consists in believing ourselves so humble that we are proud to be humble. 49 TREASURES 17. HUMILITY Humility is one of the highest virtues that the Christian can achieve on earth. Humility should be a quality that every Christian should cultivate and long for. Although Jesus said that whoever humbles himself, he is the greatest in the kingdom of God. It seems that Christians have not been able to understand it, since recognition is mostly sought. Nobody wants to serve others. Jesus said: 26 But it will not be so among you, but whoever wants to become great among you will be your servant, 27 and whoever wants to be first among you will be your servant; 28 as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many (Mt. 20: 26-28). Jesus was humble when he was on earth. He said: 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am meek and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls (Mt. 11:29). As a man, Jesus humbled himself to the utmost when he was on earth, to serve as an example to every Christian: 5 Let then this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, did not regard being equal with God as something to cling to, 7 but he emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, made like men; 8 and being in the condition of man, he humbled himself, becoming obedient until death, and death on the cross (Phil. 2: 5-8). 50 TREASURES OF THE BIBLE This verse says that we must have the same feeling of humility that Christ had when he was on earth. For that humility, the Father exalted him to the utmost: 9 For this reason God also exalted him to the utmost and gave him a name that is above all names (Phil. 2: 9). If we understood from the heart, the value of humility and service to others in the kingdom of God, great conflicts unleashed by power and ambition within the Church would be avoided. It is literal, Jesus said that the greatest in the kingdom of God is the servant of others and whoever humbles himself will be exalted: 11 For whoever exalts himself will be humbled; and whoever humbles himself will be exalted (Lk. 14:11). This exaltation of the humble does not refer strictly to an earthly exaltation, even if it occurs; but to a complete exaltation in eternity, where what we are before God will be revealed. The truth is that humility is the only path that leads us to great achievements on this earth and in eternity. Christians should focus on being humble of heart and serving selflessly on earth, rather than titles, positions, and recognition of men. 51 TREASURES 18. THE VOICE OF GOD, SATAN AND MAN The human being is matter and spirit. That means he can listen physically, but spiritually he also has the innate ability to communicate with the spirit world, either with God or with Satan. That is decided by each one. The human being has the ability to hear the voice of God, that of Satan or his inner voice. It depends on who you listen to. For that reason, it is difficult to know who is speaking to us. On one occasion Jesus rebuked Peter because he could identify that Satan was speaking through him (Matt. 16:23). In the Bible there are many cases of people who heard the voice of the devil and attributed it to God. Such is the case of the lying spirit that got into the false prophet Zedekiah (1 Kings 22). God is a living God who speaks, but it is difficult to know when a person speaks for God, for Satan, or for his own heart. A person who speaks for God does not contradict the Bible. But the only thing that can help us understand the difference between these voices is the preparation in the Word and the spiritual discernment that we must ask God for. If someone claims to speak in the name of God and people allow themselves to be deceived, it will not only be the fault of the person who speaks falsely; but also, of the one that he listens to because the Christian must prepare himself in the knowledge of 52 TREASURES OF THE BIBLE the Bible so that he is not caught off guard and God will hold him responsible for that (2 Tim. 2:15). 19. THE GREATEST ENEMY There are three great enemies of the Christian, namely: Satan, the world and the flesh, we will see which is the greatest enemy. Satan is the adversary of God and therefore of the Christian. However, the Bible says that Jesus defeated him on the cross: 15 And stripping principalities and powers, he exhibited them publicly, triumphing over them on the cross (Col. 2:15). Because of Christ's victory over Satan on the cross, Christians have delegated power over all forces of evil (Luke 10:19). Satan cannot touch the Christian, except with God's permission, for some divine purpose (1 John 5:18: Luke 22:31). The world with its materialism and vanity is another powerful enemy of the Christian. Jesus was tempted by Satan with the riches and glory of this world: 8 Again the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory, 9 And he said to him: All this I will give you, if you worship me prostrate (Mt. 4: 8-9). 53 TREASURES Jesus rejected Satan's offer. He said that he had conquered the world: 33 In the world you will have affliction; but trust me, I have conquered the world (John 16: 33b). Christians too, we overcome the world through our faith in Jesus: 4 Because everything that is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world, our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? (1 Jn. 5: 4-5). The flesh is another enemy of the Christian. We know that human nature is inclined to evil from original sin. The Christian, although born again by the spirit, still dwells in a body inclined to evil and a constant battle is waged between the flesh and the spirit. Jesus said: 41 Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak (Mt. 26:41). Paul explains the battle of the spirit with the flesh as follows: 16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the desires of the flesh. 17 Because the desire of the flesh is against the Spirit, and the desire of the Spirit is against the flesh; and these are opposed to each other, so that you do not do what you want (Gal. 5: 16-17). On one occasion, Paul, speaking of his fight against the flesh, said: 54 TREASURES OF THE BIBLE 24 Miserable me! Who will free me from this body of death? More immediately gives the answer saying: 25 I thank God, through Jesus Christ our Lord (Rom. 7: 24-25). In short, Jesus has defeated Satan on the cross and everyone who receives him as Savior defeats Satan on his behalf. Jesus also defeated the world and Christians, through our faith in his Name, can overcome the world. To overcome the flesh, we must nourish our spiritual life through the word of God (Lk. 4: 4), fasting and prayer in order to subject our flesh to the spirit. That is what Jesus did when he was on earth. Therefore, the greatest enemy that the Christian has is his own will, because in order to defeat the devil, Jesus must be received as savior; To overcome the world you must use his faith in Jesus and to overcome the flesh you must submit to God every day: 7 Submit yourselves therefore to God; Resist the devil, and he will flee from you (James 4: 7). Ver, Ef. 10:18; Lc. 9:23. So the greatest enemy a Christian has is his own will. 20. DIFFERENCE BETWEEN JUSTICE AND TRIAL Sometimes the issue of justice is confused with judgment. Some people say that God will give them justice, but in reality, what they are thinking in their minds in judgment, because what they 55 TREASURES long for is revenge. It is necessary to be clear about what these two words mean and more in the Covenant of Grace. What is justice and judgment according to the Bible? Justice is one of the characteristics or attributes of God. It implies that God gives each one what he deserves. The starting point about divine justice in relation to human beings is that we all sin and are destitute of his kingdom (Rom. 3:23). This is where divine mercy comes in, which justifies us gratuitously, not because of our personal merits (Rom. 5: 8). And if it is not for our merits, it implies that we deserved to die; but we were delivered by God, who justified us in Christ. As Jesus was our substitute on the cross, because we deserved death, it means that there is no self-righteousness that has made us agreeable before God, but pure divine love. So, god’s justice for humanity is manifested in his mercy, forgiving the sinner in order to save him. That leaves us all convicted and God as the only judge. However, the forgiveness of our sins carries with it the command to forgive others. It is at this point where we err, because when we ask for divine justice, we forget that He has already commanded us to forgive, just as we were forgiven. It is there where instead of forgiving and asking for mercy, we ask for revenge and retribution of punishment on the sinner. The Lord says: 56 TREASURES OF THE BIBLE 19 Do not avenge yourselves, my beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God; because it is written: Vengeance is mine, I will pay, says the Lord. 20 So if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by doing this, you will heap coals of fire on his head. 21 Do not be overcome by evil but overcome evil with good (Rom. 12: 19-21). Sometimes the justice of God is not manifested in judgment on the wicked, but in blessing on his children. Instead of immediately condemning the sinner, God gives him an opportunity for repentance. What God does is bless his children for testimony as a reward. On the other hand, judgment is what the sinner reaps for his actions. This divine judgment is just, the Bible says that God will pay each one according to his works: 6 Who will repay each one according to his works: 7 eternal lives to those who, by persevering in doing well, seek glory and honor and immortality, 8 but anger and anger at those who are contentious and do not obey the truth, but obey injustice (Rom. 2: 6-8). The Bible demands that the Christian show the same mercy that he received. Because judgment, without mercy, will be done on those who show no mercy. Because divine mercy triumphs over judgment: 57 TREASURES 13 For judgment without mercy will be done to him who does not show mercy; and mercy triumphs over judgment (James 2:13). We must be careful not to confuse divine judgment when we ask for justice. Our duty is to show love and mercy, the judgment only belongs to God. 21. REPENTED AND CONVERTED In the Bible we find the expression: Repent and be converted: 19 So, repent and convert, so that your sins may be blotted out; so that times of refreshment may come from the presence of the Lord (Acts 3:19). We know from the Bible that salvation is obtained by believing and confessing Jesus as Savior: 9 That if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved (Rom. 10). To confirm this biblical teaching, we affirm that salvation is obtained by the sole confession of Jesus as savior. But what does the Bible mean by saying, repent and convert? These two words are together for a reason. It does not mean that salvation is obtained in two stages, that would be a mistake. To regret, it is the act of acknowledging our sin and confessing Jesus as Savior. Become, it is not a second 58 TREASURES OF THE BIBLE stage of salvation, it refers to bearing fruit worthy of repentance in our new nature. The Bible says: 17 So if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things passed away; behold, they are all made new (2 Cor. 5:17). The new birth (Jn. 3) is evident in the Christian by its fruits: 22 As for the old way of life, put off the old man, which is flawed according to deceptive desires, yourselves in the spirit of your mind, 24 23 and renew and put on the new man, created according to God in the righteousness and holiness of truth (Eph. 4: 22-24). The conversion it refers to bearing the fruits of our new spiritual nature and abandoning past sinful practices. John the Baptist exhorted his generation, not only to acknowledge his sin; but to bear fruit worthy of repentance: 8 Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance (Mt. 3:8). When a person hears the Gospel message and feels attrition and conviction of having sinned, it leads to repentance and confession of Jesus as Savior. But from then on, he must abandon the past life of sin and begin a new life that produces good fruits, those of the Spirit. 59 TREASURES 22. JEHOVAH OF ARMIES God has different names and titles in the Bible, but we will not write the tetragrammaton or name of God in this section, but from the name of the Lord of hosts, as the sovereign authority of every created army. God, as sovereign creator of all things, rules over all his creation. Jehovah of armies means that God has created innumerable hierarchies of authority that constitute small armies ruled by his great power. As sovereign creator, God rules over all the armies He has created: 6 By the word of the LORD were the heavens made, and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth (Ps. 33: 6). From the beginning, the Bible speaks of the armies that God created in the second heaven and on earth: 1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them (Gen. 2: 1). The heavens were made by God and his armies worship him: 6 You alone are Jehovah; you made the heavens, and the heaven of heavens, with all their army, the earth and everything that is in it, the seas and everything in them; and you give life to all these things, and the armies of heaven worship you (Nh. 9: 6). God also created armies in the third heaven: 60 TREASURES OF THE BIBLE 19 Then he said, “Hear therefore the word of the Lord”: I saw the Lord sitting on his throne, and all the host of heaven stood beside him, on his right and on his left (1 Kings 22:19). God has armies deployed in all his creation, like the created beings in the third heaven (angels, cherubim, seraphim, etc. Rev. 11:11); the stars in the second heaven; and the little armies of the earth. The Bible speaks of the army of locusts: locusts came, and aphids without number; 34 35 He spoke, and and they ate all the grass of their land and devoured the fruit of their land (Ps. 105: 34). The Bible also speaks of the army of wasps: 20 Jehovah your God will also send hornets upon them, until those who remain and those who have hidden from before you perish (Deut. 7:20). Today, when science has increased, we can learn more about different species of birds, land and sea animals that constitute small armies created by God. In the Bible, the name Jehovah of armies sometimes refers to the God of the squads of Israel (1 Sam. 17:45), that is, to armies of human beings. But the name Jehovah of armies does not refer to human armies; It ranges from the largest, like the powerful celestial beings, to the simplest, like the army of small ants on earth. 61 TREASURES The Bible says: 25 The ants, not strong people, and in the summer, they prepare their food; 26 The rabbits, not an effortless people, and they put their house in the stone; 27 The locusts, which do not have a king, and all come out in gangs (Pr. 30: 25-27). Jehovah of armies is the sovereign authority over all the armies created with his power and that are deployed in his immeasurable creation. God calls the stars by his name (Ps. 147: 4); he makes lightning his messengers, and even the winds obey him: 4 He who makes the winds his messengers, and the flames of fire his ministers (Ps. 104: 4). Ver, Lc. 8:25. 23. THE JUDGMENT OF ADDING OR REMOVING THE BIBLE The Bible is clear in pointing out that whoever adds or takes away from divine revelation will add judgment and take away their share of eternal life. Although the passage mentioned is found in Revelation, it applies to the entire Bible. From the Old Testament it was warned that the person who did not confirm the Word of God with an amen, was under a divine curse for rejecting the Word of God: 26 Cursed is he who does not confirm the words of this law to do them. And all the people will say: Amen (Deut. 27). 62 TREASURES OF THE BIBLE In the first part of the Revelation passage, it is noted that, if anyone adds to divine revelation, God will add the judgments written in Revelation: 18 I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy in this book: If anyone adds to these things, God will bring on him the plagues that are written in this book (Rev. 22:18). Adding means adding to the revelation of the Gospel of Christ. In the Jewish religion it was common for teachers of the Law to add heavy burdens to their followers. Jesus condemned these practices, because it is adding to divine revelation: 4 Because they tie heavy loads difficult to carry and put them on the shoulders of men; but they don't even want to move them with a finger (Mt. 23: 4). This way of adding to the sacred text is considered heresy. Jesus called them the commandments of men: 7 For in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men (Mark 7: 7). The judgment for those who add to the revelation of the Gospel is that the judgments of the Bible will be added to them. This is because they knew the sacred text but added to its content. Jesus had already warned that more judgment would be added to those who hear and do not obey: 63 TREASURES 24 He also said to them: See what you hear; for with the measure you use, it will be measured to you, and even those who hear will be added to you (Mark 4:24). In the case of those who mutilate the sacred text and take it away, accommodating the Bible to their convenience, God warns that their part of eternal life will be taken away: 19 And if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his part from the book of life, and from the holy city and from the things that are written in this book (Rev. 22:19). Here it is inferred that these are connoisseurs of the Gospel, since no one can take away the Bible if they do not know it. Because they take away from the Bible, God takes away his part of the book of life and the joys of the heavenly city. It is interesting to note that God makes a fair judgment in both cases, for those who do not respect his Word. To what he adds to the Bible, God adds judgments. Whoever takes away the Bible, God takes away his eternal inheritance. The Bible warns of the danger of distorting the revelation of the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: 8 But if even we, or an angel from heaven, proclaim another gospel different from the one we have announced to you, let him be anathema. 9 As we have said before, I also repeat it 64 TREASURES OF THE BIBLE now: If anyone preaches a different gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed (Ga. 1: 8-9). 24. THRONES IN THE SKY The Bible says that in heaven is the throne of the Father and that of the Son: 21 To the one who overcomes, I will give him to sit with me on my throne, just as I have conquered, and have sat with my Father on his throne (Rev. 3:21). Jesus promises that we will sit on his throne, just as he has sat on his Father's throne. This tells us of two thrones in heaven. In the Bible the throne of the Holy Spirit is not mentioned, but it does not mean that it does not have, nor is it essential to know it, since God is one. Perhaps the throne of Christ in heaven is related to his role as King of kings, for having won on earth. We children of God will sit on the throne of Christ as a reward. It must be remembered that Satan wanted to be equal to God and to sit on a throne (Isa. 14:13). The Bible also mentions that in heaven there are 24 elders sitting on 24 thrones (Rev. 4: 4). These elders are saints who overcame on earth, have authority, and are privileged to stand before the throne of God. 65 TREASURES 25. KINGS AND PRIESTS The Bible says that Jesus has made us kings and priests: 6 And he made us kings and priests to God, his Father (Rev. 1: 6 a). The part of kings, is because we will rule over the earth: 10 And you have made us to our God kings and priests, and we will reign on earth (Rev. 5:10). The priestly facet is because we will be kings under a theocracy or the government of a holy God: 9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people purchased by God (1 Pet. 2: 9 a). The Bible says that this authority of kings we will receive during the millennium and will be assigned to each one according to the correct administration of the gifts and ministries that we have received: 16 The first came, saying, Lord, your mina has earned ten minas. 17 He said to him: All right, good servant; Because you have been faithful in a little, you will have authority over ten cities. 18 Another came, saying, Lord, your mina has produced five minas. 19 And to this one he also said: You also know about five cities (Lk. 19: 18-19). At the second coming of Christ, the saints come to reign with Him (Rev. 19: 14-15). During that millennial rule of Christ on earth (Rev. 20: 4), some saints will rule among the Gentiles 66 TREASURES OF THE BIBLE and the apostles of Christ will rule in Israel seated on twelve thrones: 27 Then answering Peter, he said to him: Behold, we have left everything, and we have followed you; What then shall we have? 28 And Jesus said to them: Truly I say to you that in regeneration, when the Son of Man sits on the throne of his glory, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, to judge the twelve tribes of Israel (Mt 19: 27-28). 26. THE KINGDOM OF GOD The theme of the kingdom of God is one of the most relevant for humanity. It is about reestablishing God's rule over humanity and having his perfect will done. In the model prayer, Jesus established the prayer for the establishment of his kingdom as a perennial and paramount request in the life of the Christian, until his kingdom is established over mankind. He said: 10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so also on earth (Mt. 6:10). The theme of the kingdom of God is one of the most important in the heart of the Father, since it is to restore perfect communion with our Creator. This topic is extensive and here we only try to talk about some aspects of the kingdom of God. 67 TREASURES We will discuss three basic facets of the kingdom of God that are necessary for total restoration, namely: 1) The kingdom of God has drawn near to men. 2) The millennial kingdom. 3) The kingdom of heaven. It should be clarified those readers sometimes do not distinguish or confuse these three terms when studying the Bible. a. The kingdom of God has drawn near to men. When Jesus manifested himself as the saving Messiah of humanity, he spoke saying: 9 And heal the sick who are in it and say to them: The kingdom of God has drawn near to you. 10 But in any city where you enter, and they do not receive you, going out through its streets, say: 11 Even the dust of your city, which has stuck to our feet, we shake against you. But this you know that the kingdom of God has drawn near to you (Lk. 10: 9-11). With the manifestation of Jesus to the world the kingdom of God came closer to men. It means that Jesus came down from heaven to call human beings to belong to the kingdom of God (Col. 1:13). But even though the Bible says that Jesus has all power in heaven and on earth (Mt. 28:18), he has not yet established his kingdom in his entirety: 8 You held everything under his feet. Because as soon as she subjected all things to him, she left nothing that was not subject to him; but we still do not see that all things are subject to him (Heb. 2: 8). 68 TREASURES OF THE BIBLE This passage says that, although God subjected all things to Jesus, not yet all things are subject to Him. That means, Jesus has already been declared King of the earth and of all creation; But now not everything is subject to Him, because accepting His kingdom in our hearts is voluntary. Humanity in general has rejected the kingdom of God in their hearts and for that reason not everything is subject to Him, now. That is why in this time, the kingdom has only approached men. b. The millennial kingdom. The second facet of the kingdom of God in the lives of men is the establishment of the millennial kingdom of the Messiah on earth, that will be during his second coming. Now it is voluntary to accept or reject the kingdom of God on earth, each person decides. But when Jesus returns to reign on earth, he will not be a volunteer. The Bible says: 10 So that in the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those who are in heaven, and on earth, and under the earth; 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father (Phil. 2: 9-11). When Jesus returns to earth everything will be subject to Him, it will not be voluntary. He will rule the earth in a total way and will no longer allow sin. The Bible says: 15 From his mouth comes a sharp sword, to strike the nations with it, and he will 69 TREASURES rule them with a rod of iron; and he treads the winepress of the fury and wrath of Almighty God (Rev. 19:15). The kingdom of God will be established when Jesus returns to reign on earth. No one will be able to establish the kingdom of God before, every promise to establish the kingdom of God on earth, while sin exists, is false. Only the Messiah will establish true peace during his millennial reign on earth. c. The Kingdom of God and the Kingdom of Heaven When the Bible mentions the words: The Kingdom of God and the Kingdom of Heaven, they must be understood from the context in which they are written, since sometimes they refer to the kingdom of God in heaven and at other times to the rule of Christ over the earth. To know which kingdom each passage in the Bible refers to, you need to study it in context. In relation to the subject that is referring to that verse and the other verses that are in the passage. It is possible that the Jews used the expression: The Kingdom of Heaven to refer to the kingdom of God on earth, in contrast to the kingdom of God. 70 TREASURES OF THE BIBLE It should be remembered that the Jews do not mention the name of God, therefore, instead of saying the kingdom of God on earth, they said: The Kingdom of heaven on earth. A clear example of this is when the prodigal son sins against his father, he avoids saying the word God, instead, he uses the word heaven to refer to God. He said: 18 I will get up and go to my father, and I will say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you (Lk. 15:18). In the context of the following passage, we will notice that the expression: The Kingdom of God, is used to refer to the kingdom on earth. Jesus said: 16 Because I tell you that I will not eat it anymore, until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God. 17 And having taken the cup, he gave thanks, and said: Take this, and divide it among yourselves; 18 because I tell you that I will not drink any more of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God comes (Lk. 22: 16-18). In this passage, Jesus refers to the fact that he would not take the fruit of the vine (grape juice) again until he returned to rule the earth. By saying: "Until the kingdom of God comes", it refers to his return to reign on earth. Nor can that meal be confused 71 TREASURES with the Marriage Supper of the Lamb, which will be in heaven (Rev. 19: 9). The next passage also refers to the rule of Christ on earth; not to the white throne judgment described in Revelation (Rev. 20:11). This judgment will be made when Jesus comes to reign: 31 When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then he will sit on his throne of glory, 32 and all nations will be gathered before him; and he will separate one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 And he will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left (Mt. 25: 31-33). It is important to know which kingdom each verse or passage in the Bible refers to so as not to confuse the kingdom of God in heaven and the kingdom of heaven on earth. 27. DISCIPLES OF CHRIST One of the most important things in training a Christian is his ability to be a disciple of Christ. We know through the Bible that Christians have been made children of God (John 1:12), that is our position before our loving Father. There is no more intimate relationship than this. We also know that Jesus has brought us to a level of friendship with God (John 15: 14-15; James 2:23). This relationship reveals the level of intimacy we 72 TREASURES OF THE BIBLE enjoy with God, but we will only understand it perfectly in heaven (1 Cor. 13: 9-12). Although our degree of fellowship has been restored by Christ to a level of intimacy with God, we are still on earth and our human nature must be subject to the spirit while we physically live. Therefore, we must fulfill our facet of being Christ's disciples in order to walk in harmony with God through our obedience to his Word. Just as Christ voluntarily submitted to the Father when he was on earth: 7 And Christ, in the days of his flesh, offering supplications and supplications with great cry and tears to the one who could deliver him from death, was heard because of his reverent fear. 8 And although he was a Son, by what he suffered he learned obedience (Heb. 5: 7-8). Jesus himself, after resurrecting, ordered his disciples to go and make disciples: 19 Go therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit (Mt. 28:19). Making disciples was the most important mandate of Jesus after resurrection, but the Church sometimes forgets this great commandment of Christ and the lack of a good formation in the knowledge of God's ways produces great conflicts and losses for the Church. Not for nothing does the Bible say that people perish for lack of knowledge (Hos. 4: 6). 73 TREASURES Jesus commanded his apostles to go and make disciples of all nations by teaching them all the things he had commanded them: 20 Teaching them to keep all the things I have commanded you; and behold, I am with you every day, until the end of the world. Amen (Mt. 28:20). This call to make disciples for Christ is for the Church of all time. New converts must be discipled early so that they have a solid foundation in the knowledge of God's Word and in the revelation of its power. Making disciples was the apostle Paul's great priority for the new converts as he expressed it early to the brothers in Ephesus, when they first converted to Christ: 15 For this reason I too, having heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and of your love for all the saints, 16 I do not cease to give thanks for you, making memory of you in my prayers, 17 so that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him, 18 enlightening the eyes of your understanding, so that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, and what are the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, 19 and what is the supereminent greatness of his power towards us who believe, according to the operation of the power of his might (Eph. 1: 15-19). Paul prayed for the brothers in Ephesus so that they could understand the great mysteries of the kingdom of God so that they would be strengthened in their faith. Paul enjoyed great 74 TREASURES OF THE BIBLE revelation from God and longed for all Christians to understand the greatness of our call to inherit salvation. Paul's priority was to transmit all of his knowledge to new converts to Christ so that they would rejoice in the glorious hope of our eternal redemption (Ti. 1: 2, 2: 11-13; Rom. 5: 2-5). Let's not forget the great mandate of our Lord and God Jesus Christ to make disciples for Him, not for us. Churches should have a basic material to disciple new converts in the fundamental doctrines of the Bible. Discipleship early in the life of the newly converted will prevent them from falling into error and heresies. That is a duty of each Church and the first and great commandment of our Lord Jesus, after resurrecting. Sometimes churches just emphasize that new converts be filled with the Holy Spirit and forget the mandate to make disciples. The two must go hand in hand. There are churches where many souls are converted by the manifestations of the power of God, but the people do not remain because they do not obey the command of our Lord Jesus to disciple them. People then turn away from the Lord because, lacking a solid knowledge of God's Word, they are driven more by emotions than conviction. The error in this sense is on the part of the church, which does not disciple the newly converted. 75 TREASURES 28. THE MINISTRY OF LOS ANGELES Since Satan rebelled in heaven and was worshiped by other angels who followed him in their rebellion, and after having deceived the first couple in the garden of paradise in Eden, he has tried to direct human beings to worship creatures. and not the creator. The human being has the ability to communicate with the spiritual world, therefore, we must be careful in our relationship with the spiritual world, especially with angels. For this reason, let's consider the following. Angels are spiritual beings created by God: 7 Certainly of the angels it says: He who makes his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire (Heb. 1: 7). Angels are asexual: 35 But those who are considered worthy to reach that century and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage. 36 Because they can no longer die, since they are equal to the angels, and they are children of God, being children of the resurrection (Lk. 20: 35-36). Angels are messengers at the service of God: 14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent to serve those who will be heirs of salvation? (Heb. 1:14). Jacob saw the angels going up and down from heaven, some go up with requests, and others come down with answers: 12 And he dreamed: and behold, a ladder that was supported on the ground, and its end descended on it (Gen. 28:12). 76 TREASURES OF THE BIBLE The angels see the face of God and inform him about the children of God, not because God does not know it, but rather he makes them participate in the work of his creation: 10 See that you do not despise one of these little ones; because I tell you that his angels in heaven always see the face of my Father who is in heaven (Mt. 18:10). There are angels assigned to care for God's children: 7 Jehovah's angel encamps around those who fear him and defends them (Ps. 34: 7). Angels do not obey human orders, only God. This is revealed by the following passage: 13 While Joshua was near Jericho, he raised his eyes and saw a man standing in front of him, who had a drawn sword in his hand. And Josue, going towards him, said to him: Are you one of us, or one of our enemies? 14 He replied: No; but as a Prince of the army of Jehovah I have now come. Then Joshua, falling on his face to the ground, worshiped him; and he said to him: What does my Lord say to his servant? (Js. 5: 13-14). Angels do not admit adoration: 10 I bow down at his feet to worship him. And he said to me: Look, don't do it; I am your fellow servant, and of your brothers who retain the testimony of Jesus. Worship God, because the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy (Rev. 19:10). 77 TREASURES There is a danger of falling into the worship of angels: 18 Nobody deprives you of your prize, affecting humility and worship of angels, meddling in what he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his own carnal mind (Col. 2:18). The Bible warns that if even an angel proclaims another gospel, let him be anathema: 8 But if even we, or an angel from heaven, proclaim another gospel different from the one we have announced to you, let him be anathema. 9 As we have said before, I also repeat it now: If anyone preaches a different gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed (Ga. 1: 8-9). This passage is a clear warning that Satan disguises himself as an angel of light and can deceive the Christian: 14 And it is no wonder, because Satan himself disguises himself as an angel of light (2 Cor. 11:14). There is a danger of becoming fascinated with angels and falling into their adoration and consequent condemnation. The angels are set to guard the children of God on earth (Ps. 91:11), we do not know all the details of how God instructs them. The important thing is that they are on earth to help us, not for us to adore them. The worship of Satan is a clear example of how the worship of angels ends. Satan was a cherub in heaven who, because of his beauty, ended up being worshiped by other angels. The Bible says: 78 TREASURES OF THE BIBLE 14 You, great, protective cherub, I put you on the holy mountain of God, there you were amidst the stones of fire you walked. 15 You were perfect in all your ways from the day you were created until iniquity was found in you (Ezekiel 28: 14-15). The example of what happened to the angels when they were fascinated with this Cherub in heaven, should serve as an example on earth so as not to fall into the adoration of angels, and a consequent condemnation. God did not spare the angels who worshiped Satan (2 Pet. 2: 4) and brought them down along with Satan from heaven: 12 How you fell from heaven, oh Lucifer, son of the morning! You were cut down to the ground, you who weakened the nations. 13 You who said in your heart: I will ascend to heaven; on high, by the stars of God, I will raise my throne, and on the mount of testimony I will sit, on the sides of the north; 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, and I will be like the Most High (Isa. 14: 12-14). This Cherubim (now Satan) not only deceived many angels in heaven, but subsequently deceived human beings on earth to rebel against God. If God did not forgive Satan and the angels who worshiped him in heaven, he also will not forgive those who worship the angels on earth. The tragedy is that the Bible shows that the angels of God do not allow any kind of exaltation, pre79 TREASURES eminence, or worship. They know that the first place belongs only to God. It is to be noted then that, when Christians are fascinated with so-called angels (Col. 2:18), it is demons who manifest themselves and not the angels of God. The Bible speaks of Satan’s angels: 7 Then there was a great battle in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought (Rev. 12: 7). The Mormon sect is a clear example of the doctrine of deceiving angels on earth. Joseph Smith, the founder of the Mormons, was seduced and deceived by a supposed angel, who taught him doctrines contrary to the Bible. The person involved is sometimes unaware now when he falls into the deception of seducing angels and falls into the devil's trap. To avoid confusion and condemnation, it is important to immediately communicate any spiritual experience to the leader or pastor. 29. EL UNICO TESTIGO DE JEHOVA According to the Bible, Heavenly Father has only one faithful witness, his son Jesus Christ: The Bible says: 80 TREASURES OF THE BIBLE “5 And of Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the sovereign of the kings of the earth. To whom he loved us and washed us from our sins with his blood” (Rev. 1: 5). If Jesus is the only faithful witness of the Father, no one else should use that title on earth. The Bible says that: “1 God, having once spoken many times and in many ways to the fathers through the prophets, 2 In these last days he has spoken to us through the Son, whom he made the heir of all, and through whom he also made the universe” (Heb. 1: 1-2). Today, there are only witnesses of Jesus Christ, who are Christians. Jesus said: “8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1: 8). 30. THE RIGHT PRAYER OF THE CHRISTIAN Today and with the appearance of social networks, opinions are multiplying about: What is the prayer that Christians should pray? There are many proposals on the avenue, so, let's let the Bible speak for itself. 81 TREASURES The priestly blessing: In the Bible we find the Old Testament prayer of priestly blessing. A prayer that only the high priest could make for the people. The Bible says: 22 Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying: 23 Speak to Aaron and his sons and say to them: Thus, shall you bless the sons of Israel, saying to them: 24 The Lord bless you and keep you; 25 The Lord make his face shine on you, and be gracious to you; 26 The Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace. 27 And they will put my name on the children of Israel, and I will bless them (Num. 6: 22-27). It should be remembered that the Levitical priesthood is no longer active in the New Testament. Jesus is the only priest of Grace, and He lives to intercede for his children. The Bible says: 22 Therefore, Jesus is made surety of a better covenant. 23 And the other priests became many, because by death they could not continue; 24 but this man, because he remains forever, has an immutable priesthood; 25 For this reason, he can also perpetually save those who draw near to God through him, always living to intercede for them (Heb. 7: 22-25). The Jewish Shema 82 TREASURES OF THE BIBLE Another prayer proposal is the Jewish Shema. This prayer is used by Jews three times a day and orthodoxy require that it be done in Hebrew. It is understandable that the Jews pray this prayer for the following reasons: a) They do not know the prayer taught by the Messiah. b) They have no revelation of the Holy Spirit to pray. c) That prayer speaks to Israel. It should be clarified that this passage is not a prayer ordered by God, it is part of the commandments of Moses given to Israel. It is not a prayer per se. The Jewish Shema should not be a Christian prayer, because it does not refer to Christians, but the Jews. Also, it is not a prayer, it is a commandment: 4 Hear, Israel: Jehovah our God, Jehovah is one. 5 And you shall love Jehovah your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might (Deut. 6: 4-5). The prayer taught by Jesus Jesus' disciples were shocked by his prayer life. They asked him to teach them to pray: 1 It happened that Jesus was praying in a place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him: Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples (Lk 11-1). 83 TREASURES Usually, the Jew repeats the same prayer three times a day. Jesus refuted the monotonous prayers and answered his disciples by saying: 7 And praying, do not use vain repetitions, like the Gentiles, who think that by their talk they will be heard. 8 So do not become like them; because your Father knows what things you need, before you ask him (Mt. 6: 7-8). The next prayer was the one Jesus taught the Christians. This prayer encompasses the relationship with God and with others. Also, God's priorities and human needs. This prayer should be used as a basis for praying. Jesus said: 9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so also on earth. this day our daily bread. 12 also forgive our debtors. 11 Give us And forgive us our debts, as we 13 And do not lead us into temptation but deliver us from evil; for yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. (Mt. 6: 9-13). Therefore, this is the correct prayer that Jesus taught Christians. 84 TREASURES OF THE BIBLE CHRISTIAN BOOKS BY JOEL PERDOMO 1. THERE IS NO CURSE FOR CHRISTIANS 2.
