Option Two: Going Directly into a Career (with a Career-Technical Certificate, a Health Related
Certificate, or an AA or AAS degree from Hinds CC)
Answer each of the following questions and then submit the form.
1. What is the career that I am pursuing? (Remember- if you are unsure, you can use the
Interest Assessment or the OOH to help you decide.)
a. Licensed Practical Nursing
2. What are 3 reasons why I have chosen this career?
a. I love science and healthcare.
b. High demand for nurses
c. Pay is on a higher scale
3. Do I know anyone who works in this field? If so, have I contacted them and asked
questions about this career? If not, what steps will I take to learn more about this
field?
a. Yes, I have a friend that has graduated and is currently working as a LPN.
4. What are the minimum qualifications to have this career? Go to the OOH and type
your career in the search box. Choose an option that best matches your chosen
career. Then look at the tabs across the top and click on “How to Become One”.
List those degrees, certifications, etc.
a. Graduated from an accredited Practical Nursing program and pass the
Practical Nursing NCLEX.
5. Based on your answer in #4 and the information from the college Pathways (under
Program of Study at www.hindscc.edu), are you going to pursue a Career
Certificate, a Technical Certificate, or an Associate of Applied Science (AAS)
degree?
a. Career Certificate
6. What are the job duties/responsibilities for this career? On the OOH website, click
on the “What They Do” tab at the top. List 4-5 duties/responsibilities.
a. Monitor patients’ health by checking their blood pressure, body
temperature, and other vital signs
b. Provide basic patient care and comfort, including changing bandages and
helping with bathing or dressing
c. Discuss care with patients and listen to their concerns.
7. What is the salary range? On that same website, click on the “Pay” tab. Answer
the following:
a. Median annual wage (this means the average): 54,620
b. The lowest 10% of people earn: 40,490
c. The highest 10% of people earn: 72,650
8. On that same website, click on the “Job Outlook” tab and share what you learned
about the job prospects/opportunities in this career.
a. That as time goes by the baby-boom population are fading out and the
overall need for healthcare services are increasing.
