connected discourse. This are the kinds of texts that we don’t know exist inside the texts.
As you travel inside this module, you will learn that discourses is an important part of a
text that conveys long and comprehensive informations.
Objectives

❖ Identify discourse (nature and purpose) and text.
❖ Describe written text as a connected discourse.
Let us learn!
There are structures above the sentence because they are made by combining sentences
together. They are “complete” in a way sentences are not.
•
These structures are DISCOURSE and TEXTS.

Everything hurts except loving yourself. Treating yourself to the best of your
ability, giving yourself the best things that people around you cannot
provide.
The best things, be a friend that you never had.
What is a Discourse?
A formal way or lengthy discussion where concepts and insights are
arranged in an organized manner. It refers to how a language is used to convey
meanings or to propel action to provoke a specific response.
Purpose of Discourse
1. To inform – to provide a descriptive and comprehensive discussion of the topic.
2. To persuade – aims to persuade, tries to convince the readers that the
proposed claim or solution is better than any other proposal.
3. To entertain – aims to amuse provides a source of entertainment for its
readers.
Basically, anything that is structurally “beyond” the sentence is a discourse.
o Discourse focuses on how we connect sentences together. A discourse is
mainly about how language is used to connect sentences together so that
it carries more meaning than a single sentence.

TEXT AS A CONNECTED DISCOURSE
•
TEXT
Made up of sentences having the
property of grammatical cohesion.
•
DISCOURSE
Made up of utterances having the
property of coherence.
When we say coherence, the overall text has meaning while cohesion on the other hand
means that every part is connected with one another.
