CHARACTERS TATA SELO - He is the farmer who was sentenced for murdering Kabesa Tano who forces him to give up the land he was farming. KABESANG TANO - He is the Landlord of Tata Selo he is also their Barangay Captain SALING - She is the only daughter of Tata Selo, A sick lady who worked in Kabesang Tano’s House as a housemaid. Alkalde - He is the mayor of town, the one who talked to Saling about her father's case Hepe - He is the chief police officer who ruthlessly hurt Tata Selo Binata - He is the son of the richest proprietor in San Roque, He wears glasses and stands with his arm akimbo while smoking a cigarette. Amang - He is a young boy, the son of farmer like Tata Selo. He sneak to the prison to see Tata Selo and talk to him. 3. PLOT EXPOSITION The story begins at the jail where Selo is surrounded by people caused of the news that he had killed Kabesang Tano. People were asking him about what had happened and why did he kill the Kabesa. Tata Selo said that he only did it because the Kabesa was trying to take his land and he was only defending himself from the hit given by the Kabesa. He begged the Kabesa to give him a chance but he only canned him. RISING ACTION Later on, a tall white man came and confronted Tata Selo. But as Tata Selo tries to tell his side of the story, the man doesn’t care. All he cares about is the sin that Tata Selo did and it’s him killing the Kabesa. Trying to tell what happened Tata Selo, tells in detail how the Kabesa canned him. But likewise, the man didn’t listen and left. 4. CONFLICT The story conflict is that Tata Selo killed Kabesang Tano because Kabesang Tano want Tata Selo to stop working on the farm. 5. CLIMAX Amang, came the son of another farmer he asked Tata Selo what really happened. While talking, their conversation went down to Saling, Tata Selo’s daughter, which made the pity old man teary and worried. Soon, the Mayor also came and people became more aggressive to know what really happened. The mayor then answered them that Tata Selo hit the Kabesa in the mouth which made his teeth fall off. The mayor then decided to take Tata Selo to his office to talk. While there, Tata Selo tried to explain what happened, but he was stopped only to be told that it would not change anything and that the old man would be put in jail. At noon, the mayor left and that’s when the chief of police approached him and then brutally beat the old man until he was down on his knees. 6. DENOUEMENT Amang left to take Saling home. But he came back and told Tata Selo shocking news. He said that he was not able to go inside the mayor’s office. In that time, Tata completely lost his hope. He was left stunned in a corner, worried for his daughter’s life. There he realized that people had taken everything from him. 7. THEME Family Love –Tata Selo and Silang are willing to give up everything in order to save each other. Social Injustice - Discrimination and inequality were dominant in the story as it can be viewed how poorly Tata Selo and his family were treated. 8. CONTENT The story contains all the needed context for all the readers. The author exposed his talent in writing this short story. 9. TONE Beginning: Serious Middle: Sadness End: Grief 10. ATMOSPHERE It’s already a rainy season but still not raining. 11. STYLE Tata Selo, is a fictional narrative based on the real-life land reform issues and recurring political cruelties in the Philippines. 12. POINT OF VIEW Third Person Point of View – because there is a narrator that tells the story. 13. LITERARY DEVICES FLASHBACK – Because Tata Selo is telling to everyone what happened to him and Kabesang Tano. 14. SIGNIFICANT HUMAN EXPERIENCE Tata Selo and Silang experience injustice because, in this world that we are living in, if you are nothing, you will always experience injustice, especially from those who have power over you. 15. MORAL/LESSON There have been several knocks on the door of justice, but the reality is that the world is crucial and even justice has standards. The concept of justice, which states that equality must be served equally, has been corrupted by a system in which one's ability to defend oneself or obtain justice is based on their wealth. Wealth is currently the best way to survive in the unequal society of rich and the poor, which is a terrible reality we must face. Even justice open its widest door to those with high profiles, leaving those who are incompetent abd poor pleading for mercy and justice 16. ENDING Tata Selo clings to the railing while looking outside and saying that everything has been taken away from him.
