Problem
Marriott hotel one of the biggest
and most populous hotels in Lagos,
Nigeria with the highest rated
costumer service in the country.
Guests of Marriott Hotel have a
common problem of devices getting
ruined by falling into the bath tub.
Most guests check into Marriott to
get away from stress, so they come
with the intent to relax. This
relaxation usually involves self care
and watching movies in the bath on
their phones, tablets, iPad, etc. Its
often hard to take a bath, watch
movies listen to music and snack
leading to things falling into the bath
water.
A previous solution was attempted
by using a large hard piece of wood
to hold the phone in place and hold
the self care items (such as
shampoo, snacks, soap, etc.). This
failed as it was not partitioned and
not sturdy so items would
continuously fall out.
The staff at Marriott reached out to
me to provide a solution to this
problem as they are losing guests.
After a lot of brainstorming I came
up with the solution of a bath table.
This solution is versatile as it can be
used for more than just baths, but
also when watching movies, on a
television, as a stand to hold pop
corn and drinks.

• I am going to design and make a bath table that will
not only be sturdy, but also be spacious enough to
contain most items guests will use in the bath. I aim to
make it retractable, eye catching and environmentally
friendly.
• I plan on it being versatile. Versatile enough for it to be used in
other activities. Such as holding equipment, to hold phones
while watching movies, on a vanity to hold materials.
• It will be more portable as it will be retractable and able to fit in
most compartments allowing it to also be used in homes.
• It will be easy to operate and safe for users of
most age groups to use.
My aim is to make the Bath table cost effective, durable and
have a long lasting shelf life. I also plan to make it waterproof
and sizeable enough to contain a good amount of items.

I did a survey with current guests at Marriott to see what the guests prefer and know
more on who the users of my product would be. I got 80 people to do the survey as I
wanted as accurate of results as attainable. More than half of the people surveyed
were women showing that women tend to be guests at Marriott. With that being
said my design ideas will cater more to women and reflect a more feminine style and
habit than masculine.

for or lean my design towards. Most residents seem to be in their twenties
meaning my bath table would favor the bath habits, style choices, orientation of
someone in their twenties.

Measurement of palm width to thumb
gives an appropriate size range for handles
of bath table. Measurement of middle
finger to wrist givens me an
understanding of the dimensions of the
product.
Viewing angles gives me an idea to take
into consideration when constructing my
tablet/phone holder putting to users
preference into thought.
Maximum sphere gives me an idea of the
maximum diameter for the handle. Giving
me the perfect diameter for the handle
which the user can hold on to and grip
conveniently and comfortably.

Bamboo
Pine
The natural aroma of bamboo is associated with “Zen”
which is known as a state of relaxation. It is also
associated with luxury. Bamboo is also a very strong wood
always as very lightweight which would be a good choice
for a bath table. Usually comes with imperfections but
can be concealed.
Pine wood is usually readily available and is known to
have a good resistance to molding and swelling, which
will increase its shelf life. Pine is easy to work with so it
will grant me freedom in my product design. Pine tends to
be affordable, making it easier to be bought in bulk. It is
also light weight in order to not weigh the bath tub down.

Teak
Teaks resistance to water makes it very suitable for this
use as it would help to maintain the quality of the bath
table over time. Although teak can be very expensive to
buy and doesn’t come smoothened. It also easily works
with machinery and can be held together by glue .

Plywood is lightweight and is available at low prices and it
also comes ready to be worked with. It comes in a light
color which is very pleasing to the eyes and easy to paint
over. It is also easy to cut due to how light it is. It is also
available in different thicknesses.

High density fiber
HDF is easy to partition and has a high resistance to
water. It is also cheap to buy in bulk and is highly
recommended by professionals.

This joint is easier to construct but tends to be hard to
secure as putting glue in the mortise is hard. It is also
more common than other joints and hard to see.

area to be glued or screwed it also tends to be overly
visible and doesn’t hold up for long.

surface area for adhesive to take effect. Its also very
durable and long lasting as well as easy to hide.

Silicone rubber has excellent insulation properties, a low
thermal mass, high durability and is resistant to moisture,
high temperatures and many chemicals. It also allows for
good grip and improve the water resistance of a product.

Paint
Paint can massively transform the look of a wood by
drastically changing its color. Built up in layers, it
also provides protection for the elements to the
wood.

can also change the color of wood and make it smooth.
It also happens to be one of the better options as it

Typically the only problem with varnish is it needs
several layers to be effective.
