Physical properties of
matter
PREPARED BY: BESIR ZENELI
Everything around us is made
up of different materials!
Every material has a particular
property!
Rubber’s
material
is
completely different from the
material of the desk!
Isn’t it so?
What pricesily
do we mean by
physical
properties?
Physical properties are distinctive
characteristics that describe an object
or a material.
We need to describe an object so we
can identify its characteristic or
property!
This metal here is strong!
It does not bend! It does not destroy
even if you drop it from your hands!
The pot is made up of metal!
What pricesily
do we mean by
physical
properties?
The pot is durable!
What is durable? – It’s going to last!
What about tissue paper? – Can you
reuse it again when you clean your
nose!?
What pricesily
do we mean by
physical
properties?
Malleable – a tricky word!
It comes from a latin word “malleus”,
which means “hammer”.
If a substance or material is referred to
as malleable, it indicates that it can be
manipulated with a hammer and
shaped into thinner sheets.
What pricesily
do we mean by
physical
properties?
Shiny!
Shininess is related to the conduction
of electricity!
Properties of
materials
determine their
suitability for a
particular use.
Would this pot be useful to heat water
or food, or to contain heavy things if it
had these properties:
Flexible
Fragile
Rusty
Poor heat conduction!???
Physical
properties;
materials and their
usage
Example 1:
What material is this?
•
Plastic
What are physical properties of it?
•
Light
•
Flexible
Where we can use it?
•
Beach voleyboll

usage
Example 2
What material is this?
•
Metal
What are physical properties of it?
•
Heavy
•
Strong
Where we can use it?
•
Storage

Example 3:
What material is this?
What are physical properties of it?
Where we can use it?
Imagine a book composed of a stone!
Would you be able to carry it!?
Physical
properties;
materials and their
usage
Example 4
What material is this?
•
Aluminium
What are physical properties of it?
•
Flexible
•
Strong
•
Recycle (Good for environment)
Where we can use it?

Example 5
What material is this?
What are physical properties of it?
Where we can use it?
Physical property <-> Function and usage
When we manufacture something we must consider properly for what purpose we are using it.
Finding materials with proper physical properties is one of the most important steps in manufacturing
products.
Let’s consider a car made out of gold!
Is gold the most suitable material to make a car out of?
