Vergara, Briana REC100-44 September 27, 2022 Writing Assignment #2 Question #1 From the readings on “What is Leisure,” one definition of leisure is the time away from work or responsibilities. This would include his symptoms of decompression, relaxation, rest, and ease. The second definition of leisure is an activity that involves the pursuit of truth and self understanding. As said by Charles K. Brightbill, leisure enables a person to take a step away from the world and to relieve all tensions, anxieties, and frustrations. The third definition of leisure is the ability to “discover unknown personal strengths, conquer lifelong challenges, solve problems, gain comfort and serenity, and even help their own neighbors.” The most relevant definition today must be that leisure is a time away from work or responsibility. Today, society depends on work, or pursuing an education. On the contrary, when not involved in these responsibilities, people have time for other activities such as hanging out with friends, pursuing a passion, or any activity. This would be considered leisure. Question #2 One of the four main points in “Historical Perspective of Play” is that play is used as a means of encouraging children to their final aim of life. For instance, if a child wants to work in house construction, it would be ideal for a teacher to direct them in playing with building blocks, allowing them to grow a pleasure in that goal. The second main point is that play provides value, loyalty, and beauty, for children and even adults. 1 Play has been found in many cultures, involving dance and toys that was performed in any age, and passed down generation to generation. The third historical point of play is that it can be distracting from spiritual work, or order and authority. The final point of play, according to historical perspectives, is that play is the main object of childhood, that allows a natural growth of the body and senses. Question #3 According to “Sports and Fitness,” the first main concept is the idea that sports and fitness allow “a sense of uncertainty” as being very interesting and cyclic. People enjoy playing sports and exercise as occupations or as a passion, but it is also used to make one’s life more enjoyable, and even change one’s life around. Such as Jack LaLane, and the fitness gurus who have made amazing transformations in their life due to sports and fitness. Another concept of sports and fitness is that it advocates a healthy lifestyle through cardiovascular fitness. This concept addressed by presidents, councils, and programs insists that sports and fitness are crucial to strength, and can keep us away from ill health. The other concept of sports and fitness is that they provide productive and active lifestyles, instead of living off by lazy mottos, such as “Whenever I feel the desire to exercise, I lay down until the feeling passes.” The ability to be active enables an easier lifestyle while walking around with friends, carrying a suitcase in the airport, or even cleaning chores at your house. The final concept of sports and fitness is that it provides the ability to meet the physical demands and psychological needs of everyday lives. Being balanced in sports and fitness allows people to live various lifestyles and live healthy both socially and personally. Such as for those who are overweight or unfit, use 2 fitness and sports to transform their lives and experience a new sense of living. Many gain a change in their overall physical and mental health. The most relevant concept today is seeing sports and fitness as a passion, as something very interesting and cyclic. Many people today go to the gym, post about their fitness lifestyle, and advocate diet plans, and healthy food products. Social media is a main factor of this concept as people freely express themselves and their passions. 3
