Instability of a Möbius Strip Surface and a Link with Systolic Geometry: The subject of this paper lies at the
intersection of several branches of physics and mathematics: minimal surfaces, soap films, topological transitions
computation, and shortest closed noncontractible geodesic on surfaces known as systolic curves. Euler's discovery in
1744 of the catenoid as the area-minimizing surface spanning two circular loops effectively began to study of minimal
surfaces, which are now known to play a role in areas as diverse as soaps films, supramolecular assembles, defect
structures, as well as general relativity, spring theory, and even architecture.
Of particular interes for centuries has been not only the issue of determining a minimal surfaces on the same frame.
Thus, in the case of of two pararell circular rings whose separation H is varied, the catenoid solution ceases to be a

minimun energy state beyond a critical value H *, and ceased to exist at all beyond a critical value H c (> H*). For H* <
H < Hc the lower energy state is the Goldschmidt solution; discs spanning each loop, connected by a singular line
segment. In laboratory realizations of this setup with soap fims, slow variations of the spacing beyond H c triggers
collapse of the catenoid with a complex of neck-pinching singularities, leading dynamically to the Goldschmidt solution
(minus the umphysical connection). Dynamics akin to the Raylegh-Plateau instability occur not only in capillary
phenomena but even in exotic contexts as the instability of black strings.
The catenoid is important in the study of minimal surfaces because its high degree of symmetry and simplicity make it
possible to determine in detail the nature of its linear instability at H c from the second variation at the aerea functional.
The unstable eigenfunction at the instability point is the solution of the Jacobi equation (▽² – 2K)u = 0, where K is the

Recent work has indicated that when the frame supporting a soap film is deformed so as to render it unstable [ A few

realized that he had lost a train], the location and character of ensuing singularity in the bulk of the film, whereas a
Möbius strip minimal surface transforms to a disc through a boundary singularity [Roger Tupelo, the Harvard
mathematician, stepped into the picture the evening of the 6 th . He reached Whyte by phone late, at his home, and told
him he had some ideas about the mising train. Then he taxied to Whyte's home in Newton and had the first of many
talks about Number 86]. Moreover, at least in these two cases, we observed that the location of the singularity (bulk or
boundary) can be determined by studying the topology of the systolic curve on the surface. Historically, there has been
no applications of systolic geometry in physics [Whyte was an intelligent man, a good organizer, and not without
imagination].
Given that the prototype models for topological transitions of a bounded film are the catenoid (for bulk singularities)and
the Möbius strip (for boundary singularities), it is natural to seek an analitycally tractable example of an stability for a
nonorientable surface [Tupelo was resolved to be patient. This is very hard thing for anybody to understand]. Here we
present one, using the the surface with total curvature (the surface integral of K) of 6π. As is well known, the only stable
complete minimam surfaces in R³ are planes. One therefore deduces that is impossible to continue any bounded nonplanar minimal surface to its complete form without it becoming unestable at a finite size [Tupelo was resolved to be
patient. This is very hard for anybody to understand, Mr Whyte, he said. I can see you are puzzled. But it's only
explanation]. One of the primary results is the identification, for the Meeks surface, of a one-parameter family of
contours defining a sequence of bounded surfaces which, like the catenoid, are stable below a threshold parameter value
and unstable above [the train has vanished, and the people on it. But the System is closed. Trains are conserved. It's
somewhere on the System!]. We deduce the point of instability through a combinations of straightforward analitycal
approximations and numerical studies of the Jacoby equation (ro = 0.95, 0.8, 0.7, 0.6, 0.5 stable/unestable. Incomplete
Möbius minimal surfaces. The views are shown for each choice parameter ro Surfaces for ro ≲0.54 are linearly
unstable)[Whyte's voice grew louder again. And tell you, Dr. Tupelo, the train is not in the system! It is not!You can't
overlook a seven-car train carrying four hundred passangers. The System has been combed. Do you think I'm try to hide
the train?]. In a further connection between systolic geometry and stability theory, we show that the systolic curve on
the unstable minimal surface approaches the maximum of the instability begins at the narrowest part of the neck.
The Meeks Möbius surface is most compactly given by its Wierstrass-Emperor Representation I in term of a
holomorphic function f(ϛ) = i (ϛ -1)²/ϛ⁴ and a meromorphic function g(ϛ) = ϛ²(ϛ – 1) with fg²) holomorphic. These
functions provide the components of vector Φ = (f(1-g²), if (1 + g²), 2 fg) which, with ϛ = u + v = Re[dϛ'Φ], where
X(u,v) = (x,y,z) are Cartesian coordinates [Of course not. Now look, let's be reasonable. We know the train was en route
of the missing people probably boarded the train a few minutes earlier at Washington, and forty more at Park Street

Tupelo's explanation that night did not greatly clarify the situation of Kelvin Whyte. Remember what I was saying last
night about the connective properties of networks? Tupelo asked quietly. Remember the Möbius band we made – the
surface with one face an one edge?
Alternatively, if r = e p , α = 2 sinh p β = cosh (2p), and γ = (2/3)sinh p, β sinh (3p). the complete surface is traced out as
a double covering for 0 ≤ r ≤∞ ( - ∞ ≤ p ≤ ∞) and 0 ≤ θ ≤ 2π. These representations make clear immediately the
fundamental symmetry of the surface: X (r, θ)(1/r, θ + π) or X (p,θ) = - X(- p,θ + π).
I suspect the connectivity has become infinite. The Möbius band, Tupelo said, has unusual properties because it has
singularity. The Klein bottle, with two singularities, manages to be inside of itself. The topologists know surfaces with a
many as thousand singularities, and they have properties that make the Möbius band and the Klein bottle look simple.
But a network with infinite connectivity must have an infinite singularities. Can you imagine what the properties of that
network could be?
While the (r,θ) parametrization is more intuitive, with r a radial coordinate, the (p,θ) choice is often more convenient for
algebraic and computational purposes.
Mathematics is a big pasture. I happen to be an algebraist. How can we find it? I don't think we can, Tupelo said. Whyte
broke it with a loud exclamation. He rose suddenly, and sent the Klein bottle flying across the room. You are crazy,
profesor! Between midnight tonight and 6:00 a.m. Tomorrow, we'll get every train out of the tunnels. I'll send hundred
men, to comb every inch of the tracks – every inch of the hundred eighty-three miles. We'll find the train!
When the parameter r (or p) is restricted to a finite interval whose endpoints are consistent with the symmetry or the
surface, i.e. Ro ≤ r ≤ 1/ro, the resulting surface is a Möbius strip with boundary (x(ro,θ), y (ro, θ).
I hit a red signal, the motorman volunteered. Just outside the Copley junction. Another red light. Near Park Street. We
heard it up ahead of us. But you didn't see it? No. There is a little slope beyond the light. But we all heard it. The only
thing I don't understand, Dr Tupelo, is how the train could run the tracks for nearly five days without anybody seeing.
Whyte's words trailed off into silence, and his right hand went up in a peremptory gesture for quiet. In the distance, the
low metallic thunder of fast-rolling train swelled up suddenly into a sharp, shrill of wheels below. The platform vibrated
perceptible as the train passed.
Figure 1 shows the progression of surface shapes as ro → 1 is clearly stable, while that for ro→0 is unstable, there must
exist a finite critical value that determines the onset of instability.
Now we've got it! Whyte exclaimed. Rigth past men on the platform below! He broke into a run towards the stairs to the
lower level. All others followed him, except Tupelo. He thought he knew what was going to happen. It did. Before
Whyte reached the Starrs, a policeman up to the top. Did you see it, now? He shouted. Whyte stopped in his tracks, and
the others with him.
That critical point can be determined by finding the value of ro for which the second variable of the area functional
vanishes.
Did you see the train? The policeman from the lower level asked again, as two more men came running up the stairs.
What happened? Wilson wanted to know. Didn't you see it? Snapped Kennedy. Sure not, the policeman replied. It
passed through up here. It did not, roared Whyte. Down there! The six men with Whyte glowered at the three from the
lower level. Tupelo walked to Whyte's elbow. The train can't be seen. Mr. Whyte, he said quietly. Whyte looked down at
him in utter disbelief. You heard it passed right below.
This is the equivalent to seeking a displacement ψ(u,v) normal to the surface which vanished on the boundary and is a
solution of the Jakobi equation, (▽² - 2KW ) ψ = λWψ, for the particular case λ = 0, where now ▽² = ϑuu +ϑuu/σ, where
ρ is the film density, σ is the surface tension and ω is the oscillation frequency. The condition λ = 0 thus marks the
boundary between oscillatory behavior and instability.
You didn't call me down here tonight just to tell me you'd found the missing train. Are you really sure it's on the tracks,
Mr. Kennedy? Tupelo asked. Positive, the engineer said. The dynamomenters at the power house show that it's drawing
power. What happened? Nothing, Whyte answered. Nothing at all. The power was off for twenty minutes. During that
time, not one of the the two hundred fifty men in the tunnels saw the red light or heard a train.
In the variables (p,θ) the Jacobi equation is: ψpp + ψθθ + 4 cosh2p + 2sinh p cos θ + 2sin²θ/(coshp cosh2p cos θ)² ψ =

As I understand it from Mr. Whyte, Wilson continued, the train has... well, it has jumped into another dimension. It isn't
really on the System at all. It's just gone. Is that right? In a manner of speaking. And this... er... peculiar behavior has
resulted from certain mathematical properties associated with the new Boylson shuttle. Correct. And there is nothing we
can bring the train back to... uh … this dimension? I know [of] nothing [ no se de nada – un error] Ich Weiß nichts.

First, we must close off the new shuttle, so this fantastic train can never happen again.
Because we are dealing with a non-orientable surface, we use an orientable double covering, for which it is possible to
find a global normal vector satisfies (p,θ) = - ň (r, θ) – ň ( - p, θ) = ň ( - p, θ + π)[equivalently ň (r, θ ) = - ň (1/r, θ +
π). Thus, in order to obtain physically meaningful displacement vector field ψǔ we require ψ (p, θ) = - θ (1r, θ + π)
[equivalently ψ(r, θ) = - ψ, (1/r θ + π)].
It's infortunate that you won't find anybody who can give a good explanation. The one man who might have done so is
Professor Turnbull, of Tech, and he was on the train [¿Mistein?]. But in any case, you will want to check my
conclusions against those of some competent topologists. I can put you in touch with several.
We discuss first the numerical solution of Eq. 4, and the determination of the critcal value p c and the unstable
eigenfunction ψc . Because of the antisymmetry discused above it is only necessary to solve the problem for 0 ≤ θ ≤ π,
with the boundary condition ψ (p, 0) = - ψ (- p,π), along with the Dirilecht boundary condition at the bounding curve,ψ
(+/- pc) = 0.
Now, with regard to the recovery of the missing train, I can say I think the this is not hopeless. There is a finite
probability, as I see it, that the train will evntually pass from the nonspatial part of the network, which it now occupies,
back to spacial part. Since the nonspatial par is wholly inaccesible, there is unfortunately nothing we can do bring about
this transition, or even to predict when or whow it will occur. But the possibility of the transition will vanish if the
Boylston shuttle is taken out. It is just this section of the track that gives the network its essential singularities.
These boundary conditions can readily be accommodated within a standard finite-diference scheme on a regular grid in
both θ and p. If, however, one uses the more physical parameter r then a hyperbolic gird r(m) = r 2m/-1o from m =
1.2..., M. allows easy implementation of the boundary conditions.
As for the continued operation of the System while the missing train is in the nonspatial part of network, I can only give
you the facts as I see them and leave to your judgement the difficult decision to be drawn from them. The transition
back to the spatial part is unpredictable, as I have already told you. There is no way it will occur, or where. In particular,
there is a fifty percent probability that, if the train reappears, it will be a collision, of course.
We determined the instabilty threshold by finding, for a coarse grid spacing, the value of p for which there first appears
a zero eigenvalue of the matrix corresponding to the finite-difference discretization of Equ. 4. Refinement of the gird
was used to sharpen this numerical estimate to pc ≃ - 0,607 (rc ≃ 0.545).
The engineer asked: To rule out this possibility, Dr. Tupello, couldn't we leave the Boylston shuttle open, but send no
trains through it? Then, when the missing train reappears on the shuttle, it cannot meet another train.
Figures 2a,b show, for p = pc and the double coverting, the quantities KW, which enters the Jacobi equation, and
numerically obtained critical mode ψ c. The critical surface. The term – 2KW in the (r, θ) plane for ro = 0.545. Unstable

The precaution would be ineffective, Mr. Kennedy, Tupelo answered. You see, the train can reappear anywhere on the
System. It is true that the System owes its topological complexity to the new shuttle. But, with the shuttle in the System
it is in the whole System that possesses infinite connectivity. In other words, the relevant topological property derived
from the shuttle, but belonging to the whole system.
The maximum amplitude of the Gaussian curvature term is anticorrelated with the maxima of the modes. The latter are
located approximately at the center of each covering. Because the Jacobi equation describes the oscillations of a curved
soap film clamped at this edges.
I don't know about the people on the train, Tupelo cut in. The topological theory does not consider such matters. He
looked quickly at each seven tired, querulous faces before him. I'm sorry, gentlemen, he added, somewhat more gently. I
simply do not know.
This lowest eigenfunction has the minimum possible of number of nodes. Fig. 2c shows the critical Meeks surface (p =
pc) color coded by the amplitude of Ψc. The maximum amplitude occurs in the 'throat' of the surface, which is locally
similar in shape to a catenoid, and directely opposite the nodal line in Ψc.
That impromptu conference in a lonelt subway car was never reported in the papers. Nor were the full results of the
night-long vigil over the dark and twisted tunnels. During the week that followed, Tupelo participated in four more
formal conferences with Kelwin Whyte and certain city officials. At two of these, other topologists were present.
Ornstein [was imported](was travelled to) to Boston from Philadelphia, Kashta from Chicago, and Michelis from Los
Angeles.
This nodal coincides with the line of symmetry of the surface, which is the unique straight line on it. the arrows in the
figure 2c represent the vectorial displacement field ψ c ṅ along the systolic curve (discussed below). The pattern of
displacements shown is qualitatively identical to that observed in experiment, where the interface collapses towards the
frame.
The mathematicians were unable to reach a consensus. None of them would fully endorse Tupelo's coclusions, although
Kashta indicated that the might be something to them. Ornstein averred that a finite network could not prove this
proposition not actually calculate the connectivity of the System.
From the results in Figure 2 we see that the critical mode ψc = 0 on the surface boundary dominates the locally large
value of the Gaussian curvature there. Therefore, the presence of of K makes only a minor change to the shape of the
unstable mode. This lack of coordination between KW and ψ suggests that an approximate analitycal approach to
solving the Jacobi equation is to reduce it to one-dimensional equation by averaging the periodic variable θ. This
integration Jacobi equation ψ pp - 2KW Ψ ≃ 0.
But the more deeply Tupelo analyzed the problem, the more fully he was convinced of the essential correctness of his
first analysis. From the point of view of topology, the System soon suggested whole families of multiple-valued
networks somehow eluded him. He gave the subject his full attention for only a weak. Then his other duties compelled
him to go back the problem to lay the analysis aside. He resolved to go back to the problem later in the spring, after
courses were over.
The average KW is a complicated combination of hyperbolic functions that, remarkably, can be represented with great
accuracy (∼ 1%) by a sum of sech-squared terms: ψpp + Uo {sech²[α(p+a)]} Ψ = 0, where a = 0.4456 aα -¹, and Uo =
α². Thus, integration over the angular variables for both the catenoid and the Meeks surface yield one-dimensional
Schrödinger equations, the former having a sech-squared potential, and the latter with one of the variants of the MorseRosen double-well potential introduced by Stec. Through the change of variables q = tanh αp Eq.
The weeks passed, and then a month. The State's investigation was completed. The newspapers stories moved the first
page to the second; to the twenty-third; and then stopped. The missing persons did not return.
Thus, integration over the angular variables for both the cathenoid and the Meeks surface yield one-dimensional
Schrödinger equations, the former having a sech-squared potential, and the latter with one of the variants of the MorseRosen double-well potential introduced by Stec.
The next week he made another trip by subway, and again the next. As experiments, they were unsuccessful, and much

boundary ϑS then the singularity that occurs when the minimal surface S becomes unstable will be on ϑS, otherwise it
will be in the bulk. The present results a lead to the additional conjecture becomes unstable the local systolic curve C
passes through the neighborhood of the maximum of the unstable mode. In the same way that the catenoid serves as a
paradigm for the study of bulk singularities that follow from instabilities of an orientable minimal surface, the results
presented here suggest that the truncated Meeks Möbius strip is the counterpart for the study of boundary singularities
occurring between systolic curves, the critical points of the curvature potential – 2KW, and the structure of the unstable
eigenfunction is reminiscent of Witten's formulation for Morse theory and suggests an avenue for future analysis. This

Alban Bergs' Wozzeck
It was a fateful day in when the Leipzig wigmaker and soldier Johann Christian
Woyzeck (1870-1824) embarked on a relationship with a widow who set little store by
loyalty. On 21 June 1821, at half past night in the evening, he stabbed the 46-year old
woman during a quarrel at the entrance to their home in Leipzig's Sandgasse.
The trial dragged on for over three years, because the defense persistently raised
doubts as to whether Woyzeck could be held responsible for his actions. However,
repeated examinations of the prisoner by the court's medical assessor, Privy Councillor
Dr Clarus, led the latter to the conclusion that Woyzeck could indeed be held fully
responsible for the murder. His reports also had the backing of the Faculty of Medicine
at Leipzig University.
When nothing more stood in the way of the death sentence, Woyzeck was publicly
hanged in the marketplace in Leipzig. In 1836/37 Georg Büchner set to work on a
drama in which suggests that the class hierarchy, as a determining force, was the main
cause of Woyzeck's downfall, furthermore he explains the crime as the outcome of
mental confusion that has its roots in the self-alienation of the victim brought about by
the social structures of that time, in Büchner's view, the deplorable state of society –
with a gaping chasm between the tormentors and the tormented - was the sole cause
of the murder commited by Woyzeck. Büchner openly expresses his empaty with the
sorely afflicted creature.
