From Gr.10 onwards, our students are expected to either participate in a school sport or a lifestyle sport. • Communication: Students are expected to take ownership of communication around their chosen sport commitments, and to follow the correct channels of communication. a) When a student becomes aware of a clash between a sport session and something else, they are to communicate this directly and immediately with the Head of Sport Department/ Head of Sport Code (relevant staff member – not coach). b) To request permission to miss an afternoon sport session, students need to communicate with the Head of Sport Department/ Head of Sport Code (relevant staff member – not coach) by latest lunch time on the day of the session, unless there is an emergency, in which case the communication needs to be done as soon as it is possible afterwards. c) To request permission to miss a morning sport session, students need to communicate with the Head of Sport Department/ Head of Sport Code (relevant staff member – not coach) the day before, unless there is an emergency, in which case the communication needs to be done as soon as it is possible afterwards. • It is each student’s responsibility to ensure they are marked on the register when they attend a sport session, especially when arriving late/ after the session has already started. • Students are expected to be at their session 5mins before the start, so that the session can start on time, and the given time slot can be maximised. • School transport is provided as much as is possible for away fixtures, but parent support is sometimes needed, and always appreciated and immensely helpful. • Indoor court – to protect the indoor court surface and ensure longevity, we ask that the correct footwear is worn – court shoes with light-coloured soles. This is for all sport codes that use the indoor court for training and/or matches. • Being involved in multiple sports Sport sessions will unfortunately clash. Students may not select a sport in which matches can’t be played due to a clash with another sport. If a student selects two sports within which a training session clashes, the major sport may take preference and the student may then attend just the one weekly session of the minor sport, with the understanding that the student can’t be selected to an A-team in the minor sport. Athletics – Gardens Rugby Football Club (GRFC) Athletics as primary sport – students to attend both sessions per week Athletics as secondary sport – students may attend one of the two sessions per week, or both. Whichever option is chosen needs to be attended consistently. Specialist coaches for sprinting, hurdles, middle distance and long jump. Students are to be dropped off at GRFC in the morning; school will provide transport back to campus afterwards. School transport to GRFC will be available for students that reside in Katherine Boarding House, departing from the palm trees at 06:15. Kit: SCS Athletics uniform and appropriate footwear. Basketball – SCS Indoor and outdoor courts Basketball players must attend both practices per week, as well as matches on Thursdays. Swimming Swimming is offered at 3 levels: - Life Skills swimming, where students learn to swim from the very beginning, practicing water safety, gaining confidence in the water, and learning basic swimming skills. - Technical swimming, where stroke correction and focus on technique takes place, and swimmers prepare towards being able to participate in galas. - Squad swimming, where students train for and compete in galas. Coaches will assess new swimmers to see whether they can attend Squad Swimming. * On a Thursday afternoon, if SCS is hosting a gala (once a term), the Thursday Life Skills and Technical swimming will be cancelled for that day) Squad swimmers are expected to attend both training sessions per week, except for high performance club swimmers, who may choose to attend one session per week (. All squad swimmers are also expected to be available for weekly Thursday galas. Life Skills and Technical Swimming run together on a Thursday afternoon, and will need to be cancelled on the odd occasion that SCS hosts a gala. Kit: SCS Swimming costume and swimming cap, with goggles as an optional extra. The sessions serve as trials, as well as preparation for any pre-season tournaments that take place in Term 1 and early in the winter season. A weekly session will be offered for netball, field hockey and soccer. Each sport code will have a separately published schedule with details on age groups, time slots, trials, etc. Pre-season training is not compulsory, but is recommended. Trials within the pre-season training programme need to be attended by all students that wish to play in those sports during winter season and wish to be considered for tournaments/ festivals that take place pre-season.
