My current knowledge on statistics currently stems from the concepts I’ve learned from accounting and economics courses. From what I’ve learned statistics are useful in the decision making process and are often used to learn more about one's business. Statistics play a huge part in the business realm especially when using it to help further the expansion and continuity of a company or idea. However, other than what was stated above I have a very general understanding and either don’t know or have had trouble in the past with the specifics that goes on with the fundamentals of stats. Prior to this class my knowledge wasn’t really solidified in this specific topic so the vocabulary and ideas are very new to me. Whether it’s new vocab words or even a refresher from terms learned in the past I don’t know how to really apply it to real life examples. In previous classes it was lightly touched on as an extension to what the actual course was about but I’ve never taken a class that is specifically all about statistics. However, since starting this course, I am working my way to be able to understand and learn the new terminologies and ideas. Being able to do the readings and see the examples in the textbook, thus, applying it to the homework has helped me learn to get a better idea on not just what statistics is generally but more specifically as well. Overall, with what little I know about this course and statistics I am confident to be able to answer the question of my current knowledge to be greater at the end of the course than what it is now, due to my expectations of the course. The expectations for the course being to further my knowledge on the many concepts that go hand in hand with statistics. Meaning, I hope to be able to have a better understanding of what it really means and how to even apply it in the real world inside and out the class setting. The expectation to be able to grasp the course all in all would help me succeed and further my skills in my degree. My major being marketing, I hope to utilize what the power that statistics has to offer, making it useful to what will eventually be my day to day career. I expect to challenge myself and really take on the information not on a memorization basis but rather more a learning one. While those are my expectations for the course I can only achieve it if I hold myself accountable as a student to continue to do what is expected of me from the course. As a result, in order to expand my learning I must follow the suggested schedule of completing the assignments and not fall behind. From the past two weeks alone I have been able to learn new concepts thoroughly and successfully apply them to the homework/quiz assignments. I get pretty ecstatic when I am able to use what I learned in the chapters and be able to do the work or click the knowledge into other classes as it’s tied very heavily into the business education. This course so far has captured my attention and expanded my own thinking, especially learning a new concept and now noticing real life examples of how it’s used. Because of this I am pretty excited to continue the readings and assignments and walk away continuing to use my new found knowledge.
