Learning Competency with Code LO 1. Clean fingernails and toenails. TLE_HEBC9-12PMP-III/IVa-r-5 1.6 Clean nails in accordance with the established or acceptable procedures. II. Background Information for Learners Fingernails and toenails protect the fingers and the toes. These little shields, if not properly cared of become vulnerable to fungal and bacterial infections. So, cleaning of nails is not anymore a luxury, it is an important routine to maintain the hands and feet as healthy as possible. Before proceeding to cleaning of nails, manicurists should first sanitize client’s hands and feet to prevent the spread of harmful infections. The following procedure should be followed: 1. Prepare soapy solution of hot water and antibacterial soap in a bowl or basin. 2. Place client’s hand/foot in water, and cleanse it with disposable towel and remove from bath and pat to dry. 3. Remove cotton from dispenser with tweezers and saturate it with alcohol. Apply to skin by patting. 4. Pat away excess moisture and repeat on the other hand/foot. Procedure in Cleaning Nails (Manicure) 1. Remove old nail polish using cotton moistened with nail polish remover. 2. Shape nails by filing starting with the little finger towards the thumb from corner to center to avoid nail splitting. You may discuss with the client the nail shape best suited for her. 3. Soften cuticle with cuticle remover. 4. Loosen cuticle by using the spoon end of the cuticle pusher while keeping it moist with cuticle remover. 5. Clean the free edge from the center toward each side with gentle pressure by using a cotton-tipped orangewood stick dipped in soapy water. 6. Trim cuticle with cuticle nipper in a single segment. 7. Cleanse nails by brushing the fingernails using a downward movement. 8. Dry hands and nails thoroughly. 5 Procedure in Cleaning Nails (Pedicure) 1. Remove old nail polish from the nails of both feet. 2. File toenails with a nail file or an emery board starting the little toe, from corner to center to avoid splitting and rounding them slightly at the corners to conform to the shape of the toes. 3. Soften the cuticle with cuticle remover. 4. Loosen the cuticle by using the spoon end of the cuticle pusher while keeping it moist with cuticle remover. 5. Apply cuticle remover and clean under the free edge of each toenail with a cottontipped orangewood stick. 6. Trim cuticle with cuticle nipper in a single segment. 7. Cleanse nails by brushing the toenails using a downward movement. 8. Dry the feet and nails thoroughly III.
