Sometimes, it maybe more than just wind or rain. It may also include thunderstorms and snowing. Our world can be affected by the weather. The weather can change what we wear and what we must do. (such as going to the park on sunny day) WHAT IS EXTREME WEATHER? • Extreme weather includes unexpected, unusual or unseasonal weather. • This may take place over one day or a period of time. TYPES OF EXTREME WEATHER Flood Thunderstorm Hurricane Tornado Heat wave Drought Hail Blizzard Wildfire Tropical cyclone Cold wave Ice storm Dust storm Typhoon Tsunami Fire tornado HOW CAN EXTREME WEATHER AFFECT OUR LIVES? Extreme weather can directly harm animals and people, destroy the places they live such as houses, nests, cave or building. Houses can be destroyed. People can die in extreme weather and animals can die too. It is impossible to escape extreme weather. In heat waves we cannot drink water because of the heat waves, it will be dried. HOW DO WE STAY SAFE IN EXTREME WEATHER? • Close the doors • Don’t go near the windows • Keep your phone off • Turn off the lights and stay away from the electronic wires • If you have a car, keep the car in the car park • Keep your phone a 100% so you can call someone for help • Be updated with the latest weather reports and Obey evacuation orders WHAT IS TYPHOON? A typhoon is a giant, rotating storm that brings wind, rain, and destruction. Hurricanes and typhoons are both kinds of tropical cyclones. The storm that occur In the northern Indian Ocean, the western south pacific and southeast Indian ocean is called cyclones. Typhoon" is used for powerful storms in the western Pacific and southeast Indian Ocean, while "hurricane" refers to storms that start in the Atlantic, Caribbean and northeast Pacific. HOW CAN WE SURVIVE IN TYPHOON? • The electricity must cut off, so we need torchlight, matches and candles. • We also need some food like snacks, water bottle. Bring medicines, blankets and clothes. • Find a safe place to stay with you, your pets and your family. • Keep your emergency bags as well as your charged phones within reach . • Make sure everything re-chargeable is charged and unplug all your appliances • If you have time, move or secure items outside that can be picked up by the wind. • If you are outside, seek shelter in a basement, shelter or strong building. • Cannot quickly walk to a shelter, immediately get into a car and try to drive to the nearest place. Remember to buckle your seat belt. HOW CAN WE STAY SAFE IN TYPHOON? Do not panic, keep calm Stay inside and away from windows and glass doors. Keep curtains blind closed. Find a safe room and stay inside with your family and pets. Turn off the main power switch. Don't use your phone. Lie on the floor, under a table or another sturdy object. If safe drinking water is NOT available, boil water for at least 20 minutes. Keep an emergency kit on hand. A portable, battery-powered radio should be part of an emergency kit. An evacuation order is given in a local area, try to move immediately. EXTREME WEATHER IN US • USA gets more high-impact weather than any other country on the planet. Extreme temperatures can turn deadly, quickly in the United States, killing more than 700 people every year. More tornadoes hit the USA than any other nation on Earth. • 1900 Galveston Hurricane : This was the deadliest natural disaster ever to strike the United States. Nearly 8,000 people lost their lives on Sept. 8, 1900, in what was the biggest city in Texas at that time.
