Lesson
1
Elements and Principles of
Contemporary Art
The elements and principles of art and design are the foundation of
the language we use to talk about art. The elements of art are the visual
tools that the artist uses to create a composition. The elements and
principles of art are line, shape, color, value, form, texture, and space
discussed in module 1. But in this module, we focus on the five elements
and principles of contemporary art that the artists usually use. These are
appropriation, performance, space, hybridity, and technology.
What’s In
In your previous lesson, you have learned about Filipino artists and
their contribution. One of the famous artists in the Philippines is Fernando
Amorsolo. His paintings are known for depicting rural and urban Filipino life
in the early 20th century. His works show the Filipino culture and traditions
in the ideal light and what our country should envision when thinking about
our culture.
You also learned Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan, also known as the
National Living Treasures, the award given to a person or group of artists
recognized by the Philippine government to contribute to the nation's
cultural heritage. These previous lessons help you understand how to
evaluate contemporary art forms based on contemporary art's elements and
principles.
Let's try to review what's you've learned in the past lesson. Answer the
question below.
Question: What are the roles and contributions of the Gawad sa Manlilikha ng
