Derek Warner UN1015 Nila McGinnis 1/20/2023 SCP Foundation Rhetorical Analysis Proposal For the rhetorical analysis assignment I plan on writing about the SCP foundation. The SCP foundation is a multimedia community work consisting of short descriptions of fictional monsters. Works from the SCP foundation are comprised of short stories, youtube videos, art work, and much more. The goal of the SCP foundation short descriptions is to make them feel as real as possible and to create an organization with the sole goal of containing and protecting the public from these entities. I plan to argue that the SCP works do a fantastic job of using the different types of rhetorical appeal to portray the most convincing story of this organization. Links https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/about-the-scp-foundation(scroll down to mission statement) https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-173 (example for pathos) https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-999 (example for pathos) I can give many more but this is just a proposal Ethos: Ethos is portrayed one way by saying that there is a government organization that is trying to restrain the monsters. It gives credibility to the organization by saying the government is supporting them. Another way ethos is used is by giving people different titles such as researcher. It shows there is a system in place giving people these roles. Pathos: Pathos is achieved mostly through the feeling of fear or uneasiness. The descriptions try to explain in detail exactly what the monsters can do, most of the time the abilities of the monsters are deadly to humans. In the case of SCP 173(see second link) they can teleport when not being directly looked at and it despises humans. The implications are scary and invoke the feeling of fear. Another example of pathos is happiness/awe and wonder. In the case of SCP 999 the feeling of happiness/awe and wonder is what I felt. There are many more examples of different emotions the reader would feel but these are the big two. Logos Logos is achieved in the extra details in the descriptions. Stuff like them giving heights and detailed descriptions of the different monsters. Logos is also achieved in the fact that they give results to experiments that they have performed. Kairos Kairos is achieved by being formulaic in the structure of the descriptions. The format describes the containment procedure, description, and any experiment or interactions with the monsters. This helps the reader to understand what the creature looks like and is capable of before explaining the different interactions the organization has had with it. Kairos is also achieved when you first open the website. It will explain what the SCP foundation is about before giving access to the different monsters. It gives context to why they are there and what they do. Linguistic Mode Linguistic mode is used throughout the entire SCP description. The main way is in the descriptions. The descriptions are written from the point of view of a researcher who studies the SCP’s. Another way linguistics is used is how the descriptions are set up. The descriptions are very professional with little to no unnecessary details. Linguistic mode is also used in how the writers black out text. This makes the reader feel as if they're reading government documents that were released to the public. visual mode Visual mode is used by giving images of the monsters. It gives context to the descriptions and allows the viewer to have a better picture of what they're reading about. proposed thesis statement The multimedia community work “SCP Foundation'' is vary persuasive in its goal of creating descriptive works by giving great detail to everything and making the view feel as if these monster where real. (this will probably be change for the real paper)
