ADN1 Medication Form It is recommended that you use this form to learn the required medications for ADN I. You will be tested on the medications from your medication list both in theory and in clinical. Drug name Trade/Generic Usual Adult Dose and Route: Classification: How the drug works Interactions with food and drugs Nursing implication for giving the drug: Time of day, assessments, and lab follows Ther. class: bronchodilators It relaxes the airways smooth muscle causing bronchodilation which increase O2 consumption after albuterol inhalation. Treats as asthma or COPD by reducing BRONCHOSPASM (wheezing). Ther. class: antiarrhythmics Manages a condition where your heart suddenly beats much faster than normal supraventricular tachyarrhythmias (SVT) by suppression of arrhythmias. Slows the heart rate and decreases peripheral vascular resistance (vasodilation) Ther. class: Anticoagulation Decreases risk of stroke/systemic embolism associated with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation. Treatment of and reduction in risk of recurrence of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism (PE). Ther. class: laxatives Used to prevent constipation and straining. Given to decrease straining after MI or rectal surgery. Promotes incorporation of water Use with caffeine-containing herbs (cola nut, guarana, tea, coffee) Increased stimulant effect. Beta blockers may inhibit therapeutic effect. Increased risk of hypokalemia when used with diuretics that increase renal secretion of potassium. Hypokalemia Increase the risk of digoxin toxicity. (hypokalemia=low potassium) Increased levels of digoxin (↓ dose of digoxin by 50%). Avoid Grapefruit juice it inhibits enzymes in the GI tract that metabolize amiodarone resulting in Increase levels and risk of toxicity. Administer treatment QID 0800/1200/1300/1700. Before treatment assess lung sounds, pulse, and BP during peak of medication. Note amount, color, and character of sputum produced. Blood screening should be done regularly to check potassium levels. Administer BID 0800/1200. Monitor pulse and HR daily. Monitor lab values regularly while using this medication Can be taken with or without food Increased risk of bleeding with other anticoagulants, aspirin, clopidogrel, and NSAIDs. Do not use St. John's wort it may increase the risk of thromboses. Administer BID 0800/1200. Monitor patient for symptoms of stroke, DVT, PE, bleeding, or peripheral vascular disease periodically during use. Nonsignificant interaction with other drugs or food. May be administered on an empty stomach for more rapid results. NOTE: This medication does not stimulate intestinal peristalsis; stimulant laxative may be required for constipation. Administer TID 0800/1200/1500. Assess for abdominal distention, presence of bowel sounds, and usual pattern of bowel movement. Assess color, consistency, and amount of stool produced. Dose/Route Generic: Albuterol 2.5–5 mg/3ml/Inhaln Trade: Nexterone Generic: Amiodarone 200mg/po 400 mg/day maintenance dose Trade: Eliquis Generic: Apixaban Trade: Colace Generic: Docusate sodium 2.5mg/po 100mg/po into stool, resulting in softer fecal mass. 40mg/po Ther. Class: diuretics Increases renal excretion of water, sodium, chloride, magnesium, potassium, and calcium. Reducing water retention and decreasing edema. Can be taken with or without food Increased risk of hypotension with antihypertensives, nitrates, or acute ingestion of alcohol. Increased risk of hypokalemia when used with other diuretics. Trade: Xylocaine Generic: Lidocaine 1 patch/TD Can be applied with or without food Generic: Metoprolol Trade: Lopressor 25mg/po Ther. Class: anesthetics (topical/local) localized anastatic used to reduce pain. Stops nerves from sending pain signals. Ther. Class: antihypertensives Beta-blocker used to decrease BP and heart rate. Trade: Prevacid Generic: lansoprazole 3mg/mL/po 15mg Ther. Class: antiulcer agents Antacid (heartburn) treatment. Trade: Tylenol Generic: Acetaminophen 650mg/po Ther. Class: nonopioid analgesics Mild pain and fever reducer Trade: Lasix Generic: Furosemide Beta blockers increase potassium level in the blood. Avoid potassium-rich foods like meat, milk, bananas, and sweet potatoes can result in (Hyperkalemia) high blood potassium levels can damage your heart and cause a heart attack (MI). Hypomagnesemia ↑ risk of digoxin toxicity. Can be taken with or without food Avoid alcohol Administer Daily @ 0800 to reduce edema/water retention. Monitor weight daily, amount and location of edema, lung sounds, skin turgor, and mucous membranes. Monitor BP and pulse before and during administration. Monitor lab values regularly while using this medication Apply patch daily @ 0800 Monitor for pain intensity in affected area periodically during therapy. Administer Q12H 0800/2000. Monitor BP, and pulse. Monitor lab values regularly while using this medication Administer BID 0800/1200. Monitor routinely for abdominal pain/cramping, fever, diarrhea, and bloody stools. Monitor lab values regularly while using this medication Administer Q6H PRN. Assess pain type, location, and intensity prior to and 30–60 min after administration. Monitor lab values regularly while using this medication
