"Books are the ultimate Dumpees: put them down and they'll wait for you forever; pay attention to them and they always love you back." JOHN MICHAEL GREEN Author John Green's experiences at the hospital where he worked and witnessed children suffering from life-threatening diseases inspired him to become an author and to write the book ‘The Fault in Our Stars’ which is dedicated to his friend Esther Earl. “I guess I wanted to show that people living with illness are also doing many other things. They aren’t entirely defined by their illness or by their disability. A lot of times I think that, from the outside, maybe we imagine sick people as being defined by their illness or as being simply, merely sick. They’re also capable of love and they have all the same desires as other people. Their lives are every bit as rich and complex and important and meaningful as any others." - John Green TITLE : The fault in our stars AUTHOR: John Green LANGUAGE: English PUBLISHED: January 10, 2012 GENRE: Romance Novel, Young adult fiction COUNTRY: United States TEENS AND YOUNG ADULTS Augustus Waters Hazel Grace Lancaster The novel tells the story of a seventeen year old girl named Hazel Grace Lancaster who suffers from thyroid cancer. Hazel is concerned that her death will be devastating to her parents, leaving them unable to carry on without her. Unlike other kids she didn’t have much to aspire for until she meets Augustus who had once suffered from cancer himself. Augustus and Hazel begin discussing her favorite novel, "An Imperial Affliction," and Augustus assists her in contacting the author to inquire about the book's cryptic ending. The author responds by inviting them to travel to Amsterdam to see him. During the trip, Augustus and Hazel fall in love. Unfortunately, Augustus discovers that his cancer has resurfaced, and over the next six months, he gradually becomes sicker before dying. Hazel realizes she wouldn't trade her time with Augustus for anything, so her parents will be fine after she passes away. "The world is not a wish-granting factory." "You don't get to choose if you get hurt in this world, old man, but you do have some say in who hurts you. I like my choices. I hope she likes hers." "I'm in love with you, and I'm not in the business of denying myself the simple pleasure of saying true things." "'That's the thing about pain, it demands to be felt.'" "Sometimes, you read a book and it fills you with this weird evangelical zeal, and you become convinced that the shattered world will never be put back together unless and until all living humans read the book." "Some infinities are bigger than other infinities." "If the inevitability of human oblivion worries you, I encourage you to ignore it. God knows that's what everyone else does." "I want more numbers than I'm likely to get, and God, I want more numbers for Augustus Waters than he got. But Gus, my love, I cannot tell you how thankful I am for our little infinity." "Everyone has their own story." - Everyone has their own story that they only know. We never know what they are going through or what they are struggling with. So let us not be so quick to judge and always choose to be kind. "Pain demands to be felt” - Pain is part of our lives. No matter how much we try to keep away from it, it is something we can't avoid. But the thing about pain is that we have control over how much it can affect us and we can choose wisely who hurts us. "The world is not a wish granting factory." - Life doesn't always go according to our wishes. They are things that we don't have control over. And maybe that’s the beautiful part, because these unexpected things that happen to us will turn out to be the most beautiful parts of our lives. "Appreciate small moment" - Life is too short for us to be sad. Let's live our lives to the fullest. Enjoy every moment we have and be happy. Let's not regret anything because that is the most painful thing we could ever experience. "Live" - Live, no matter how much it hurts or how unfair the world appears to be. Live each day as if it is our last day in this world. Live, because there are so many things ahead of us. Live, because living means winning. I have considered this book a great book because of the great lessons it gives. It is a book that will help people to enjoy every moment of their lives regardless of the difficulties that they are having at the moment; to appreciate the small moments we have with other people. I like how this book gives me a story that shows that love is something that is worth having. I also like how this book makes me realize that pain is part of our lives. That is something that most of us have experienced, but despite it, we still continue to look forward and keep fighting for our lives. Acuna, K. (n.d.).
