GROUP 5 NEWS REPORTS SCHOOL-BASED NEWS General Santos City Children’s Choir advances to NAMCYA Grand Finals In a display of musical bravery, the General Santos City National High School Choir will be advancing to the grand finals of the National Music Competition for Young Artists (NAMCYA) after passing the Regional Qualifying Round last August 26. Together with their coach, Kenneth Nierra, the students of General Santos City National High School – Special Program in the Arts have bagged the spot in the Children’s Choir Category semifinal round, joining the national level of the competition. Other choirs such as General Santos City SPED Integrated School Tinig Bahaghari Chorale and Davao City National High School SPA Centennial Choir will also progress to the grand finals. As of now, the team is preparing for the upcoming National Qualifying Round that will be held in Manila this November. NATIONAL-BASED NEWS Filipino broadcaster Mike Enriquez passes away at 71 Television and radio newscaster Miguel “Mike” Castro Enriquez passed away on Tuesday, August 29, at the age of 71, his home network of nearly three decades, Global Media Arts (GMA) Network, confirmed. Enriquez, a veteran broadcaster with over 50 years of experience, joined GMA Network in 1969 and later anchors DZBB’s “Super Balita sa Umaga” and “Saksi sa Dobol B.” He also served as GMA Network’s senior vice president and consultant for radio operations and president of its regional R-GMA Network. His career began with an accidental encounter in 1969, where a friend introduced him to a staff manager. The veteran broadcast journalist has battled diabetes and has had a kidney transplant, and heart bypass in past years. He underwent an organ transplant In December 2021, which required a three-month isolation period for recovery. He went back on air in March 2022 for GMA 7 election coverage and went off-air again three months after the election. INTERNATIONAL – BASED NEWS Senators blast Beijing’s new ‘10-dash line’ map: ‘China is delusional’ Senators on Thursday rejected China’s new version of a map which it called the “10-dash line” that includes the eastern section of democratically ruled Taiwan and most of the West Philippine Sea. In a statement, Deputy Minority Leader and Senator Risa Hontiveros dismissed China’s effort as a “desperate attempt” to push its schemes. “China is delusional' and the mentioned ‘map’ is Beijing’s desperate attempt to assert its lies and propaganda, she exclaimed. Hontiveros urged the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to coordinate with the National Resource and Mapping Authority to update a map that clearly shows the Philippines’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), continental shelves, and territorial seas in the West Philippine Sea. The 2023 edition of China's standard map was officially released on Monday and launched on the website of the standard map service hosted by the Ministry of Natural Resources. This map is compiled based on the drawing method of the national boundaries of China and various countries.
