About this Course Instructor Professor Andrea Kim, PhD Department of Management John Molson School of Business Email: andrea.kim@concordia.ca (see the communication section before sending an email) Course Description Organizations, including businesses, governments, and civic organizations, seek to generate value with finite resources. Creating value sustainably is one of the foremost challenges facing humanity. MANA 374 is a practical course designed to prepare you to address this challenge. It will introduce contemporary thinking on integrating sustainability into organizations and provide hands-on experience with approaches used in the pursuit of sustainability. The focus is on for-profit organizations. Learning Objectives Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Identify and prioritize stakeholders impacted by an organization’s activities. 2. Describe how companies integrate sustainability into their core strategies and business models. 3. Develop and articulate a business case for a sustainability initiative. Communication MANA 374 is an online eConcordia course. Most communication will be conducted via the course website. Announcements. The instructor will post important information about the course via the Announcements Section of the course website. Students should check the announcement postings frequently. Q&A Forum. Using the Discussion Board is similar to putting your hand up in class. It allows the instructor to efficiently address questions relevant to all students in a common, online location visible to all students. https://www.econcordia.com/my2/courseoutline/view.aspx?courseinstanceid=5188&section=ec 1/16 9/7/23, 9:23 PM eConcordia - Sustainable Management - Course Outline Within the course Discussion Board, there is a Question & Answer (Q&A) forum. The dates and times of the zoom sessions are posted in the course Agenda. A recording of each session will be made on the Connect page of the course website for students unable to attend the original session. Office Hours: Virtual office hours will be held each Monday from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. The primary purpose of office hours is to discuss questions or concerns specific to you. When joining, students will be placed in the waiting room and the instructor will meet with students on a first come first serve basis. The following should be used to join all office hour sessions. An announcement that identifies group members will be posted to the Announcement Section of the course website after the DNE date. Peer evaluation After completing Assignment 3, you will use the Concordia University Peer Evaluation System to assess the contributions of your team members. Peer assessment is Mandatory. It provides valuable feedback to the students, instructor and team members. In addition, peer assessments help JMSB in the AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) accreditation process. Half of the points will be awarded for rating all your team members for each of the four dimensions in the Peer Evaluation System. The other half will be award for providing specific and constructive comments to your teammates, as described in the Peer Assessment – Student Overview. Adjustment for Contribution to Team Assignments Individual team member grades may be impacted by the feedback provided by his or her team members. For example, points may be deducted for team members who do not complete their fair share. Likewise, points may be added for students who clearly exceed expectations (e.g., complete more than their fair share, provide key contributions, or successfully lead the group). Final Exam The final examination is scheduled for the regular final examination period. It will be a cumulative exam, in that it will cover all materials used and discussed throughout the course. The final examination will be conducted on the Concordia Online Exams (COLE) platform. It will not be proctored. An overview of the final exam will be provided during the third Zoom session. Late Assignments due to Short-Term Absence Students who need to signal short-term absence due to an unexpected and temporary health issue should submit a Short-Term Absence form (housed on the Student Hub), and then contact the instructor to discuss a plan for fulfilling any outstanding academic responsibilities. Penalties for Late Assignments Penalties will be applied to assignments that are submitted late without an approved reason (e.g., short term absence, ACSD accommodation). For every day an assignment is late without an approved reason, the following penalties will be applied. No assignments will be accepted once they are more than a week late. Time Submitted Penalty 0-24 hours after deadline (1 day late) -5% 24-48 hours after deadline (2 days late) -10% 48-72 hours after deadline (3 days late) -15% 72-96 hours after deadline (4 days late) -20% https://www.econcordia.com/my2/courseoutline/view.aspx?courseinstanceid=5188&section=ec 4/16 9/7/23, 9:23 PM eConcordia - Sustainable Management - Course Outline 96-120 hours after deadline (5 days late) -30% 120-144 hours (6 days late) -40% 144-168 hours (7 days late) -50% More than 168 hours after deadline -100% Numerical Scores and Letter Grades Each assessment will be assigned a numeric score based on the following grading system. Working on your own in a distance education course means that greater responsibility is placed on you as the student for successful completion of the course. A learner who is motivated, self-disciplined, and has good organizational skills will develop the study habits essential for normal progress in the course. While it is enjoyable to have the flexibility of scheduling your course study time, some individuals never develop a successful study routine. This pattern can place the student in a position that may result in noncompletion of deadlines or "cramming" for major assessments. Try to consider the following items when developing good study habits in an online course: Check announcements regularly. Complete course content in the order it is assigned. Set aside a certain day and time to work on your course each week. Plan ahead – do not wait until the day before a deadline to study and complete assessments. Zoom Zoom is an institutionally-approved technology. This means we have been assured of the privacy protections needed to use freely within the classroom). Zoom may be used in this course to facilitate learning at a distance. It may be used to record lectures and/or other activities in this course. If you wish to ensure that your image is not recorded, speak to your instructor as soon as possible. Also, please note that you may not share recordings of your classes and that the instructor will only share class recordings for the purpose of course delivery and development. Any other sharing may be in violation of the law and applicable University policies, and may be subject to penalties. Extraordinary Circumstances In the event of extraordinary circumstances and pursuant to the Academic Regulations, the University may modify the delivery, content, structure, forum, location and/or evaluation scheme. In the event of such extraordinary circumstances, students will be informed of the changes Behaviour All individuals participating in courses are expected to be professional and constructive throughout the course, including in their communications. Concordia students are subject to the Code of Rights and Responsibilities which applies both when students are physically and virtually engaged in any University activity, including classes, seminars, meetings, etc. Students engaged in University activities must respect this Code when engaging with any members of the Concordia community, including faculty, staff, and https://www.econcordia.com/my2/courseoutline/view.aspx?courseinstanceid=5188&section=ec 6/16 9/7/23, 9:23 PM eConcordia - Sustainable Management - Course Outline students, whether such interactions are verbal or in writing, face to face or online/virtual. Failing to comply with the Code may result in charges and sanctions, as outlined in the Code. Plagiarism The most common offense under the Academic Code of Conduct is plagiarism, which the Code defines as “the presentation of the work of another person as one’s own or without proper acknowledgement.” This includes material copied word for word from books, journals, Internet sites, instructor's course notes, etc. It refers to material that is paraphrased but closely resembles the original source. It also includes for example the work of a fellow student, an answer on a quiz, data for a lab report, a paper or assignment completed by another student. It might be a paper purchased from any source. Plagiarism does not refer to words alone –it can refer to copying images, graphs, tables and ideas. “Presentation” is not limited to written work. It includes oral presentations, computer assignments and artistic works. Finally, if you translate the work of another person into any other language and do not cite the source, this is also plagiarism. In simple words, do not copy, paraphrase or translate anything from anywhere without saying where you obtained it. (Source: The Academic Integrity Website). For some of your assignments, your instructor will be using the software Urkund / Ouriginal. It uses text matching technology as a method to uphold the University’s high academic integrity standards to detect any potential plagiarism. Urkund / Ouriginal is integrated into Moodle. For the assignments set up to use Urkund / Ouriginal, the software will review your paper when you upload it to Moodle. To learn more about Urkund’s privacy policy please review its Privacy Policy.
