email and we will set up a meeting which can be
virtual or in person.

Attendance
• Attendance is extremely important.
• Regular attendance is a demonstration of your
commitment to your own professional
development and an indicator to your peers (and
me!) that you are willing to make a full contribution
to the learning environment.
• Ensure that you are prepared for class – complete
assigned readings/activities in advance.

HURM 1103 – What’s it about?
• This course introduces you to fundamental theories,
terminology, concepts and practices related to the
successful design, delivery and evaluation of
recruitment and selection programs and services in
a corporate setting.
• You will explore a range of contemporary
recruitment and selection best practices with a
focus on establishing objective, scientific and
legally defensible approaches to recruitment and
selection.

Course Learning Outcomes
Students receiving a credit for this course will have demonstrated their ability to:
1. Describe a strategic approach to recruitment, selection and retention including the
internal and external factors that influence an organization's recruitment, selection
and retention efforts.
2. Identify
the characteristics of desirable potential employees based on defined job
.
requirements or competencies.
3. Communicate and develop initiatives to support the organization's brand in order to
attract suitable candidates.
4. Determine optimal methods for sourcing potential employees both within and external
to the organization.
5. Recommend appropriate and valid selection tools to determine suitability of
prospective employees in accordance with relevant employment standards, labour
and human rights laws, policies and regulations.
6. Evaluate potential employees based on available fit with the job requirements and
organizational strategic objectives and culture.
7. Describe objective, scientific and legally defensible approaches to recruitment and
selection.
8. Analyze measures to assess the impact of recruitment and selection initiatives.
9. Recommend initiatives to support employee retention.

Course Outline: Expectations
The course outline is posted on DC Connect in the “Overview”
module. It contains all course policies. Key policies include:
• The Recruitment & Selection Project is a group project - no
individual assignments will be accepted.
• Grades for the group project may be adjusted based on
individual contribution’s and not all team members will necessarily
receive the same grade – save your work as evidence of personal
contributions.
• Extra assignments will not be created for students to increase their
grades during or after the course is complete.
• The penalty for late assignments (group project) is a 20%
deduction per calendar day.
• On-line activities must be completed when they are assigned.
Late submissions will not be accepted and will be given a grade
of “0”.
