VARIABLES PRACTICE DIRECTIONS: Overview: This resource is a great way to teach your students how to identify scientific variables. At the beginning of every school year I spend a couple days focusing on this skill so that students understand how to plan science investigations. This product focuses on independent, dependent, and controlled variables. This assignment is on a Google Form and includes a seven minute video lesson on how to identify variables and nine different practice problems (23 total questions). In the practice problems, students will read a scientific question for an investigation and identify the independent, dependent, and controlled variables. The Google Form is editable. And, it will grade all the practice problems for you except for the last two where students must write their answers. For the last two sections, you will need to look over students’ answers as the self-grading may mark an answer incorrect if they did not spell something the same as the answer key. How to Use: This is a great assignment for introducing scientific variables and for review before state testing. I posted the Google Form in our online platform (Canvas) and students complete it on their own. You could assign this for homework or students could complete this in class with a partner. After students have completed this assignment, I recommend doing a fun investigation where students can practice planning an investigation and identify variables (I like the Bubble Investigation or the Tootsie Pop Investigation (how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop).) 1.
