LESSON 1: SALARY AND WAGES
Time Frame: 2 weeks
Enduring Understanding: Students will understand that decisions in business depends on the
concepts of salaries and wages to evaluate, improve, and conduct adjustments.

Observe the sample payslip on the right
side. Mr. Jake Pomperada earned a total of
₱2,240 for his job as a programmer. He was
deducted a total of ₱247.64 for paying some
government taxes and standard deductions. In
this lesson, you will learn how to compute for
the standard deductions and gross and net
earnings of an employee.

Income/Earning/Pay: money received for work or through investments
Salary: a fixed regular payment, typically paid on a monthly or weekly basis
Wages: a payment paid per hour of work
Gross earning (E) = amount earned by a person before subtracting all necessary deductions
Net earning (N) = amount earned by a person after subtracting all necessary deductions
Deduction (D) = is the amount held by the authority or the company as a form of payment for
some necessary dues.

COMPUTATION FOR GROSS AND NET EARNINGS
Net earnings = Gross earnings – Deductions
Deductions = Gross – Net earnings
Gross earnings = Net earnings + deductions (if these are given)
Example 2: Marian, a service crew, earns ₱55 per hour. If she works a total of 176 hours for the month
of July, how much is her:
a. Gross earnings?
b. If she will be deducted by ₱250, how much will be her net earnings?
Answers:
a) Gross earnings = ₱55 x 176 hours = ₱𝟗, 𝟔𝟖𝟎
b) Net earnings = Gross earnings – Deductions
₱9,680 − ₱250 = ₱𝟗, 𝟒𝟑𝟎
