TERMS OF REFERENCE FOR FIELD STUDIES TO EVALUATE THE CARBON EMISSIONS REDUCTIONS OF AN INSTITUTIONAL IMPROVED COOKSTOVES PROJECT IN GHANA BACKGROUND GOODPLANET FOUNDATION: The GoodPlanet Foundation’s Action Carbone Solidaire program, created in 2006, aims to combat global warming by offering sustainable and economically viable alternatives for the benefit of the most disadvantaged populations. Partnering with NGOs and local and intermediate-sized social enterprises, the Action Carbone Solidaire program supports the development of projects in South America, Africa, Asia and Europe, as part of an approach of international solidarity and general interest. The Action Carbone Solidaire program not only provides financial support but also operational assistance to these actors, enabling them to strengthen their capacities. Since 2006, the program has supported more than 60 projects in more than 20 countries in the following areas: - Access to renewable and sustainable energy and energy efficiency - The development of sustainable agriculture and forestry - Preservation and restoration of biodiversity - The recycling of household waste - The construction of bioclimatic schools The GoodPlanet Foundation is seeking qualified experts to conduct field studies to evaluate the carbon emissions of an Institutional improved cookstoves project in Ghana. The target study area is the city of Accra and its neighbourhood. SCOPE OF WORK: The consultant will perform following tasks: To conduct a study to provide an overview of the stoves/fuel combinations, cooking practices of the local institutions/schools in the study area. If possible, provide information on the various cooking technologies used in the local schools within the proposed study area. To conduct a field baseline survey to evaluate – o the availability of the resources (biomass, charcoal, etc) in the target area, the associated costs and distance covered to procure these resources. o average number of children fed per day per school (if possible, as per age group), o average number of cooking days in a month during the academic year, To conduct a minimum 5-day field tests on the traditional institutional cookstoves, to evaluate the following parameters – o the quantity of firewood/charcoal/gas used for cooking/day in the target institutions/schools. The data should be collected & analysed as per the KPT (kitchen performance test) protocol proposed by the carbon standard (Gold Standard). GoodPlanet Foundation – Domaine de Longchamp 1, carrefour de Longchamp, Bois de Boulogne, 75116 – Paris www.goodplanet.org o pattern of cooking practices (number of meals cooked during the day, number plates served per day etc) To conduct a minimum 5-day field tests on the proposed improved institutional cookstoves, to evaluate the following parameters – o the quantity of firewood used for cooking/day in the target institutions/schools where the improved cookstoves are installed. The data should be collected & analysed as per the KPT (kitchen performance test) protocol proposed by the carbon standard (Gold Standard). o patterns of cooking practices (number of meals cooked during the day, number plates served per day etc) Select and propose the applicable carbon methodology to evaluate the potential of the biomass/charcoal savings and potential carbon credits per improved institutional cookstoves. To determine the risks on health and environment of both the traditional cookstoves and the proposed institutional improved cookstoves.
