Teacher INSTRUCTIONS
Step 1. Print enough copies of page 6. for your students to have one clue template
card each. Cut the pages in half to make the cards.
Step 2. Either prewrite the secret number on each card before giving to students or
tell the student their secret number as you hand them out. Keep a record of these
numbers with student names as your answer sheet (use the template on page 5. )
The secret numbers MUST be kept a secret from other students otherwise the game
will be over fast. Secret numbers must be written on the card too.
Tip: I recommend placing a sticky note to cover the secret numbers while students
fill out their clues if you cannot keep kids separate during the filling out stage.
Step 3. Students fill out their clue pages. The clues must be true to who they are.
You could assign spots in the classroom to complete the clue pages during some
quiet reading time so that there is no chance of peeking from peers.
Step 4. Place the completed clue pages into a bag.
Step 5. Once all of the clue pages are in the bag, shuffle them. Write all of the
secret numbers on the board for the whole class to see. Explain that each student
will receive one of the mystery student cards. They must find out ‘who’ they have as
their mystery student. Once discovered, they can write the mystery student ‘match’
to their secret number on the board. The aim is to match all of the secret numbers
on the board with the correct mystery student. Once students solve their mystery
student, you can choose for them to help you referee the game OR team them up
with someone who needs help.
TIP: Highlight the rules before starting (see rules page 4.)
Board example: 1 = ?
2=?
3=?
4=? ...
Students read the clue card they receive, then using their detective skills start to try and
figure out who their mystery student is based on the information given. They can walk up to
a student and ask ‘are you secret number 7?’ The other person can only answer ‘yes’ or
‘no.’ The secret number helps with communicating to make the match! Upon discovery,
record the mystery student name and secret number match for everyone to see.
Notes & Tips for running the game:
- Whenever a mystery student is solved, everyone else still looking can deduce that person
as a possibility.
- Encourage whispering to keep it from becoming too noisy.
- If anyone yells or says more than allowed, disqualify them from the game or tell them to sit
out for a 2-minute penalty.
- Set a timer for the game (however long you wish to spend on it). I recommend at least 10- 15 minutes. Students who solve their mystery student before the timer is up wins (stickers,
points, etc.)
- Keep the secret number student list record with you to check as the game progresses.

Rules:
❑ Remember your secret number but do not tell
anyone your secret number.
❑ Use the clues on the card to narrow down which
students you should ask if they are a match.
❑ You must go up to a student and directly ask,
‘are you mystery student number___.’
❑ The only response that can be given by the
questioned person is ‘yes’ or ‘no.’
❑ If the answer is ‘yes,’ call out ‘Mystery Student

name next to their matching secret number on
the board.
❑ Please use ‘whisper’ voices during this
investigation.
