IBM EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES
As part of IBM’s Corporate Citizenship programme, a number of educational
programmes and resources have been developed for teachers and schools
across the UK. These resources cater for a wide range of age groups and
have a strong focus on science, technology, literacy and arts/culture.
All resources are free to use and can provide valuable, additional resources for
use inside the classroom. More information is provided below with an
indication of suitable age ranges and relevant groupings.
Blue Fusion

What is it? Blue Fusion has been run for more than
a decade at Europe’s largest software development
laboratory, IBM Hursley, Winchester.
In a series of one day events, 14 and 15 year old
students participate in a number of exciting activities
specifically designed to show the possibilities of
engineering and technology.
Details of the following year’s Blue Fusion plan are sent out to schools each
September. If you wish to be added to the list please e-mail
hurseve@uk.ibm.com. Schools simply sign up for the events they are
interested in and places are allocated on a first come, first served basis.

What is it? A website for school teachers which provides free and engaging
lessons, along with teaching strategies and resources. The material on the
website is designed to spark students’ interest in science, technology,
engineering and math (STEM).
TryScience

What is it? The TryScience website is free and aims to engage 8-14 year
olds in science and technology by providing a number of on-line and offline
activities which includes information on experiments and also field trips.
Activities are hands on, simple and affordable and don’t require prior scientific
knowledge.

Building a smarter planet is IBM's point of view on how
interconnected technologies are changing the way the world
functions. Smarter Planet is IBM’s approach to bring a new
level of smart to how the world works—how every person,
business, organisation, government, natural system, and
man-made system interacts. Each interaction represents a
chance to do something better, more efficiently, more productively. But more
than that, as the systems of the planet become smarter; we have a chance to
open up meaningful new possibilities for progress.
IBM has developed a number of resources which align with the Smarter
Planet initiative and can engage students in thinking about how the planet can

What is it? TheSmarterCity is a tool to visualise how cities can become
smarter through the interconnection of data, instrumentation of systems and
intelligence gained from analytics.
Many Eyes

What is it? The Many Eyes is a data visualisation website which allows users
to upload their data and then produce graphic representations for others to
view and comment upon.
City Forward

What is it? City Forward is a free, web-based tool that helps users see how
data can be used to understand what is happening in a city. The tool then
enables users to contribute to decisions/discussions about the issues
highlighted.
Innov-8

What is it? INNOV8 is a Business Process Management (BPM) simulation
game, that gives both IT and business players a better understanding of how
effective BPM impacts an entire business ecosystem. INNOV8 also
demonstrates how a more instrumented, interconnected and intelligent world
supports process improvements and working smarter to help build a smarter
planet.

programme that uses voice recognition
technology to help children and adults learn

There are a number of e-books to select from

What is it? Eternal Egypt is an interactive website that enables young people
to explore the art and history, people and places, myths and religions of
Ancient Egypt.
Hermitage

What is it? The collection of the State Hermitage includes more than three
million works of art and artefacts of world culture. The site provides on-line
resources for schools which can be used as an additional tool in the
classroom.
