Stress among College Students
Stress is undeniably, a prominent issue in a life of a college and university student. Burdened by
tons of responsibilities, assignment and variety of problematic factors into their life are probably
the cause of it. A strong connection between college student and stress have been revealed by tons
of studies (Schafer, 1996; Fisher, 1994; Altmaier, 1983; Greenberg & Valletutti, 1980) and
according to Feng (1992) and Volpe (2000), they concluded that environment, psychology, social
and biological factors are the main cause of stress. Plus, it is recorded the level of stress experience
by student, particularly college student has rapidly increase after COVID 19 pandemic. Students
developed psychological problems that causing negative changes not only academically but
personality as well due to the pandemic outbreak. (WHO, 2020) This show how much factor could
contribute to reasons of why college student is developing stress. Not to mention the severe effect
it inflicted to college student such as suicide. 10.3% of college students revealed that they have
considered suicide in a recent national survey which is already alarming. Academic stress was
found to be positively related to suicidal ideation (Franca et al., 2022) This strengthen the fact that
college student is at high risk of developing chronic stress and need the attention of public to
recognize this as an issue to be addressed. In order to prevent such tragedy from transpiring, it
crucial to know and understand the cause, the effect and the solution to stress among college
student.
To begin with, the stress among college students is mainly due to academic performance.
As students go to higher levels of study, there are several aspects to consider when estimating the
amount of stress they are under. According to Fairbrother and Warn (2003), “too many assignments
can include higher levels of stress and frustration for students”. For instance, the assignments get
much more difficult, and the deadlines become more unreasonable. Besides that, the pressure to
perform well in the examination or test makes the academic environment very stressful
(Polychronopoulou and Divaris, 2005). Students said that constant study, producing papers,
cramming for examinations, and tedious lectures were the most troublesome aspects of their
everyday lives. Exams and test prep, grade-level competition, and the need to learn a great deal in
a short amount of time all contribute to a stressful academic environment. Furthermore, Low selfesteem may be all contributing to higher levels of depression, anxiety and stress (Jayanthi et.al
2014). Students with low self-esteem have trouble believing in themselves and their abilities,
which makes them reluctant to study and take chances that may help them achieve. They may
blame themselves for circumstances beyond their control. It's natural for students to feel insecure
when their achievements exceed their own and those of their peers.
When the cause has been discovered, it is easier to identify the effect. College students'
health can be affected by stress, which leading to chronic disease at the young age. According to
(Bay Atlantic University, 2022) sleep schedule or quality of sleep can be disrupted by the high
level of stress. In other hand, less sleep can pushes to produce more hormones to the body that
negatively can affect their metabolic rate, memory and blood glucose regulation. It will turns out
to put a student in a vicious cycle, that affects their academic performance and their motivation to
do the work also being reduced. In spite of the fact that, a physical reaction is not the only affect
by stress , but it also affects student emotion, behaviour, and cognition (Dangi et al, 2020).
Moreover, everyone including teacher, housewife, student and other are stressed by different things
and experience the stress in different ways. For your information, form each category of the
numbers of symptoms, the cause of stress can vary depending on the individual. In addition, if this
stress problem is left untreated, it will cause heart problems, strokes, or even cancer which can
bring problems to college students (WHO, 2020). For example, difficulty in learning, lack of
mental strength, and others. Therefore, people need to overcome by reducing this stress problem
before chronic diseases come to attack. To conclude, "Prevent Before It's Too Late" is the best way
to describe the meaning of the stress reducing.
Lastly, a healthy lifestyle can be implemented as a daily routine to reduce stress in college.
One of the ways to do so is by making a proper schedule. Having a better vision of what they
should do today, or which one to prioritize first, can reduce their mental negativity. Thus, students
can choose a convenient time to work on their assignments, take a break, and sleep. Besides,
students can create a weekly mental record to have a clear sight on their mind state. Research has
shown, from a decent number of studies, students believe that time management and stress affect
academic performance (Soleiman et al., 2021). The situation illustrates that if a student does not
have a proper arrangement in daily life, they will likely confront stress that will ultimately disrupt
their studies. Students' mental health can also be improved by exercising regularly. In most cases,
students attempt to find peace of mind by scrolling through their smartphones. According to La
Amistad Behavioral Health Service (2023), screen time encourages stress biomarker-like
hormones to rise. Exercising does not stop at working out, moving around could also be considered
exercise. A simple act such as going for a walk and enjoying nature could relieve stress. On the
other hand, an optimistic mentality can also foster a sense of peace in students. In particular, hyping
up their self in front of the mirror will radiate positive energy and aura. In my opinion, how people
look at us depends on how we think about ourselves. By doing so, students will have a complete
idea of how to get rid of negative thoughts and unnecessary feelings.
It has been conclusively proven that everyone should take this issue seriously and work
towards overcoming the stress the best they can. Numerous issues cause stress in college students;
these include daily hassles, financial and academic factors. Stress can impair student’s cognitive
function, the ability to learn, and decrease their academic performance. It is important for colleges
to include counseling as part of their curriculum. It would be beneficial to students if qualified
counselor were available around the clock. Using effective stress management techniques can help
your academic, social, and emotional experiences in college be more positive and successful. An
opportunity to produce excellent college students which are can contribute to the progress of our
country.
