Probability
Solve the following.
1. In a class of 40 students, 8 are in the drama club and 12 are in the art club. If a student is selected at
random, what is the probability that the selected student is:
a) in the drama club?
b) in the art club?
2. A bag contains 50 marbles, 28 red ones and 22 blue ones. A marble is picked at random from the bag.
What is the probability of picking:
a) a red marble?
b) a blue marble
c) a red marble after a blue marble had been picked first.
3. At the school picnic, one of the coolers contains 12 cans of juice and 10 cans of soda. Rhona reaches
into the cooler to grab a drink for herself and one for her friend Marco.
Draw a tree diagram and calculate the probability that:
a. She grabs two juices
b. She grabs two drinks that are the same
c. She grabs two drinks that are different
d. Neither person gets a juice
4. Milos is taking two summer classes at the local college. One course is pass/fail (those are the only two
grades) while the other has a grading system of A, B, C, F (with F being the only failing grades). Assume
that the probability of each course is equal.
a. Write the sample space as a list and as a table.
b. Use your diagram to find the probability that:
i. Milos passes both classes
ii. Milos passes exactly one class
iii. Milos fails both classes
5. A group of 90 students filled in a questionnaire about their free-time activities. The three most popular
choices were: go to the cinema (C), read (R) and watch television (T). The results were:
● 26 students watch television, read and go to the cinema
● 20 students watch television and go to the cinema only
● 18 students read and go to the cinema only
● 10 students read and watch television only
● 60 students watch television, 60 students read,
● 70 students go to the cinema.
a. Draw a Venn diagram to display this information.
Calculate the probability that a student picked at random:
b. only watches television
c. only goes to the cinema.
