This reveals his ignorance regarding the asylum seeker experience. Showing ID at each checkpoint indicates that the asylum seekers are restricted in their movements, and under constant surveillance and scrutiny. “We wait for the locked door to click open, then file inside, showing our ID at each checkpoint...” (P.27 - Ana) The fact that Ana has to ‘show her ID at each checkpoint’ and ‘wait for the locked door to click open’ shows that Ana is under heavy security and has no freedom in her life. OR Asylum seekers are closely under surveillance ‘showing ID at each checkpoint’ is just one of detention centres protocols to keep asylum seekers and Australian citizens separate. Kenny doesn’t want to burden his son with the dangerous and unforgiving job he has. OR Kenny has empathy and guilt towards the detainees and acknowledges how hard the conditions are for people in the detention centre, but doesn’t want to tell Jono. “I feel suddenly panicky, picturing the layers of wire fencing, the endless gates. The sad little rooms and despondent faces.” (P.83 - Kenny) Kenny ‘suddenly’ feels ‘panicky’ as he pictures ‘the layers of wire fencing [and] the endless gates’ as he feels too guilty and scared to tell Jono about his profession. “[Eliza’s] eyes fill with tears. I can’t help but stare; none of our other case managers have shown much emotional at all.” (P.134 - Ana) “I feel the tug of guilt but kick it away. My relationship with Jonathan has to come first. The girl will be gone soon, but our bond is for life.” (Page. 228 - Kenny) The detention centre has had a negative impact on Maman causing depression which has not only affected Maman but Ana. OR The symbolism of Maman of not watching The Voice shows the change in her personality and symptoms of post-partum depression, and the effect it has on Ana. “[Maman] barely leaves the room. She doesn’t watch The Voice anymore either.” (P.184 – Ana) Maman ‘barely leaves the room’ anymore because of the harsh impact that the detention centre has had on her. This is very different to her personality at the start of the book as she used to be more energetic, bubbly and done-up.
