The people of Syria have been facing one of the biggest humanitarian crises. Since the year 2011, Syrians have been fleeing from their homes and heading to other countries in hopes of refuge. But why are Syrians fleeing their country? What are the pressing issues? Syrians are fleeing their country due to turmoil in three main forms: political, economical, and humanitarian turmoil. Here are the exact reasons why Syrian people are fleeing their country. Political Turmoil A full on war had begun in Syria between the types of government. At first, there were peaceful protests being held between people who were pro-democracy and the authoritarian regime of the Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad. But then, the president started to crackdown on these protestors by denying them their civil rights and attacking them. Al-Assad is responsible for most of the damage done to Syrians. Lots of them fled their homes due to the constant threat of violence, armed forces, and random bombing that occurred. The innocent civilians realized that their home country was now a warzone, and had to leave. Economic Turmoil Due to many Syrians leaving their country, the Syrian economy had less people contributing to it. This weakened its condition horribly, to the point where businesses and industries were shut down. Along with infrastructure shutting down, the condition of the Syrian currency became worse as well; it had high inflation rates. The price of goods and services went up tremendously. People are not able to find jobs due to lack of job opportunities. The overall condition of Syria is awful. Since Syrians can’t find a sliver of opportunity in their own country (because there isn’t much left due to the political war), they seek out jobs in other countries, and end up fleeing their own country to live a better life. Humanitarian Turmoil During the Syrian political war, multiple human rights violations have occurred from both the pro-democracy protesters and the authoritarian government of Syria. They have both been accused of atrocities such as sexual violence, torture, and abuse. Due to these violations, many people feel unsafe living in Syria; they can’t even trust their own government to protect them from human rights violations because the government themselves are participating in those violations. The people end up fleeing the country to ensure that they are protected from these atrocities. All these Syrians fleeing their country is because of political, economical, and humanitarian turmoil in it. Their own government is corrupt, so it can’t be fixed by itself. Syria needs international support; a peaceful solution must be implemented into Syria’s government. Not only does Syria’s government need support, but the refugees fleeing from Syria need support as well. It is the responsibility of the international community to protect and support these refugees; whatever the refugees need, they shall receive it in peace, because that is all they want: peace.
