Subject: Implementation of Oil Maintenance Monitor
(Wrench indicator light illuminates on vehicles equipped
with new oil replacement strategy)
DESCRIPTION
For SKYACTIV-D models, an Oil maintenance monitor has been implemented, which detects the oil
deterioration based on the driving/ environmental conditions under which the vehicle is operated. This
monitor also indicates the proper timing of the engine oil replacement to the driver.
On vehicles equipped with the Oil maintenance monitor, customers might experience that the Wrench
indicator light (on models with TFT LCD in combination with the message “Oil Change Due”)
illuminates before reaching the normal oil replacement interval of 20,000 km or 12 months (whichever
comes first) [10,000 km or 12 months (whichever comes first) for Russia/ Ukraine/ Belarus].
Vehicles with TFT LCD
Vehicles without TFT LCD
NOTE: On S5 engine models the Wrench indicator light is not only used to indicate that oil
change is due, but also to inform the driver when the oil level is too low or too high.
When the factory equipped oil level sensor detects an abnormal oil level, the Wrench
indicator light illuminates and DTC P250F (Oil level low) or P252F (Oil level high) is
logged in the PCM. Therefore, make sure to always read the DTCs when the Wrench
indicator light illuminates on S5 engine models (for the basic diagnostic and repair
procedure for all SKYACTIV-D models refer to page 4).

Operation of the Oil Maintenance Monitor
The Oil maintenance monitor determines the degree of oil deterioration using different methods (logic
A/B/C/D; for details refer to the below chart) and calculates the Remaining oil life from it. When the
Remaining oil life has reached a certain threshold, the monitor informs the driver by illuminating the
Wrench indicator light that oil change is due.

(*1): The Remaining oil life can be displayed using M-MDS or (if the Flexible oil maintenance monitor has been
activated as per the procedure on page 7) on the MZD Connect screen (refer to the procedure on page 5).
(*2): Traveled distance since last oil change can be checked via PID OILCHG_DIS on M-MDS Datalogger.
(*3): PCM counts the elapsed days only while the Room fuse is installed.
Note for vehicles with Center Display:
The center display has the function of displaying the “Remaining Oil Life”. If the MZD
Connect software version is older than the one announced in Service Information R115/13, a
wrong value might be displayed for the “Remaining Oil Life” on the center display.
The Oil maintenance monitor illuminates the Wrench indicator light when the remaining distance/ time
until the end of the oil life becomes less than 500/ 1000 km * or 15 days (whichever comes first) [for
Russia/ Ukraine/ Belarus no lead time]. As a result, the Wrench indicator light illuminates no later than
traveled distance/ elapsed time of 19,500/ 19,000 km * or 350 days (whichever comes first) [for
Russia/ Ukraine/ Belarus 10,000 km or 365 days (whichever comes first)] since last engine oil
replacement, but depending on the customer’s individual vehicle usage it might even illuminate
earlier.
*: Distance value varies depending on model (for details refer to the chart on page 3).
In general, the Wrench indicator light might illuminate before the above mentioned traveled distance/
elapsed time has been reached if the vehicle is operated primarily under any of the following
conditions:
 Driving in dusty conditions.
 Extended periods of idling or low speed operation.
 Driving for long period in cold temperatures or driving regularly at short distance only.
 Driving in extremely hot conditions.
 Driving in mountainous conditions continually.
NOTE: If the vehicle is used as a taxi or driving school car, replace the engine oil regardless
of the Wrench indicator light condition every 10,000 km or 12 months (whichever
comes first) [5,000 km or 6 months (whichever comes first) for Russia/ Ukraine/
Belarus].

How to proceed if the Wrench Indicator Light illuminates
If the Wrench indicator light illuminates, follow the basic diagnostic and repair procedure shown in the
flowchart below.
Wrench indicator light illuminates
Only S5 engine
models: Is DTC P250F
or P252F logged?
Yes
Follow the MESI troubleshooting
procedure for the relevant DTC.
No
Is the Remaining oil
life displayed on
M-MDS 10% or more?
Yes
Check whether the vehicle is
affected by the concern described
in Service Information R115/13
(MZD Connect software bug).
Yes
Perform maintenance incl. oil &
filter replacement and oil data
reset (for details refer to Service
Information MME/E007/16).
No
Is the ‘My Mazda
Service’ applicable to
the vehicle?
No
Replace engine oil and filter, and
perform engine oil data reset as per the
MESI instructions.
NOTE: Make sure to perform engine oil data reset whenever replacing the engine oil as this
will also reset the Remaining oil life value. Here, it is particularly important that the
oil data is not reset before the engine is filled with new engine oil.
Reason: The SKYACTIV-D models are equipped with an oil pressure learning
function, i.e. after every oil data reset the PCM re-learns the initial oil pressure value
with the new engine oil. Failure to follow these instructions might result in incorrect
operation of the Oil maintenance monitor.

How to check the Remaining Oil Life
To display the Remaining oil life using M-MDS, perform the below procedure.
1.
Start M-MDS and select “Toolbox” - “Powertrain” - “Engine Oil Maintenance Monitor (Flexible)”
- “Remaining oil life”.
2.
Now the Remaining oil life and remaining distance will be displayed as shown below.
NOTE: Just after performing engine oil data reset, a remaining distance of 0 km is displayed on
M-MDS. However, after the vehicle has traveled a certain distance, the correct remaining
distance value will be shown. This is normal operation and must not be considered as a
malfunction.

How to activate the Flexible Oil Maintenance Monitor
If instructed by a Service Information or if specifically requested by the customer (e.g. to display the
Remaining oil life on the MZD Connect screen), activate the Flexible oil maintenance monitor as per
the below procedure (for the applicable models refer to the chart on page 3).
NOTE: When activating the Flexible oil maintenance monitor, make sure to replace the
engine oil and perform oil data reset as otherwise the Oil maintenance monitor will
not work correctly (to avoid unnecessary oil replacement, activate the monitor only if
the engine oil needs to be replaced anyway, e.g. when performing a scheduled
maintenance service).
1. Start M-MDS and select “Toolbox” - “Powertrain” - “Engine Oil Maintenance Monitor (Flexible)”
- “Change setting”.
2.
Click “YES” on the window as shown below.
E018/16C

3.
On the next screen click “YES”.
4.
Select “ON” and press the Tick button.
5.
When the below screen appears, the Flexible oil maintenance monitor has been successfully
activated.
6.
Replace the engine oil and perform engine oil data reset.
