Climate Change in Octavia’s Parable of the Sower
Kouhestani, Maryam. “Environmental and Social Crises: New Perspective on Social and
Environmental Injustice in Octavia E. Butler’s Parable of the Sower.” International Journal
of Social Science and Humanity, vol. 5, no. 10, 2015, pp. 898–902.
The article discusses the environmental justice issues that are in the contemporary
world whereby people have destroyed their life by destroying their surroundings and the
social injustices surrounding the issue. The journal discusses the views of multiple characters
in the boo who raises issues of climate change and how it will affect sustainability in the
future. For instance, Butler claims that issues of the greenhouse effect have spread rapidly
over the years which has contributed to hunger and displacement of agricultural fields
(Kouhestani 898). The article raises Butler's arguments on the environment and how disasters
will influence human and other creatures' survival on Earth.
In addition, the journal also discusses how the church and the government mislead
society by promising people that despite environmental crises survival will be attained on
earth and in heaven. Such lies have made the illiterate and the poor continue suffering in
abject poverty due to manipulation and enslavement. The journal also shows the contribution
of religion to the environment and how people belief that God can make everything better
despite the human cause. The article is essential since it will enable me to have broad
thinking about climate change and how we can make the world a better place. Further, the
article helps me understand how government, religion, and injustices are contributing to
environmental degradation.

Lone, Sartaj Ahmad Lone. “Articulation of Environmental Issues in Octavia Butler’s Parable
of the Sower.” Journal of Literature, Languages and Linguistics, vol. 20, 2016.
The article discusses the relationship between human beings and nature and how
people’s economic academics can adversely impact natural resources and cause climate
change. Initially, environmental issues were considered to be trivial, however, these aspects
have become a critical area of concern among people. Humans and the natural environment
are interdependent aspects. without measures to protect the environment, human activities
can lead to environmental disasters and threats to human existence.
The article is useful in understanding climate change since it is peer revied hence the
information provided is authentic. The article is current hence the information provided will
enable me to understand how contemporary human activities including the application of
modern technology can lead to climate change. The article will enhance my understanding of
climate change since it portrays interactions between humans and nature and how these
associations have evolved in the current era of technological growth. The article also shows
the relationship with the book the parable of the Sower where Buttler claims that humans
destroy their lives by mishandling natural resources (Lone 24). The information is critical in
comprehending how people’s innovation and irresponsible practices can cause global
warming hence climate change.
Shahnavaz, Delia. “Earthseed Planted: Ecofeminist Teachings in Octavia Butler’s Parable of
the Sower.” The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal (URJ), vol. 9, no.
2, 2016, pp. 40–46.
The article discusses the contribution of women to the environment and their role in
sensitizing climatic change in the future. The authors raise the issue of how the patriarchal
society has influenced womankind and the natural environment in the world. The role of
masculinity and the destruction of the surrounding is the area of discussion the author has

specialised most on. In some cases, the author has raised issues that environmental
degradation will influence sustainability and will cause the necessities such as water to
become for expensive than gasoline (Shahnavaz 41). The novel is critical in helping me
understand that solving the climate change problem will entail changing the focus from
fantasies and beliefs to realities of protecting the environment.
In addition, the article discussed the role of religion and how it has caused more
destruction by promising future places and leaving the untainted earth. The author compares
women's mistreatment in society to the destruction of the Earth. In this case, the author
claims that the destruction of the earth prevents it from procreating. The article elaborates on
the contribution of women to the extent of disguising their identity and behaving as men in
the efforts to protect and revolutionise the world through their words and actions.
Vakoch, Douglas A. “An Ecofeminist Reading of Octavia Butler’s Parable of the Sower and
Parable of Talents.” Dystopias and Utopias on Earth and Beyond: Feminist Ecocriticism of
Science Fiction, Routledge, New York, NY, 2021, pp. 50–69.
The book provides an in-depth analysis of Buttler’s ecofeminist ideas in her book The
Parable of the Sower. The book describes the contemporary issues affecting people such as
gender and racial discrepancies and climate change. The book is valid since it explains how
modern developments cause environmental degradation and the information provide is full of
originality. The book uses Butteler’s ideas in explaining the cause and solutions to climate
change. Industrial Revolution in the modern world has caused environmental damage thus
creating a need to search for favourable grounds.
The book will help me understand the concept of climate change better since it uses
the information from Octavia’s book to discuss how combined forces of capitalism and
multinational corporations cause environmental damage. According to Buttler, global
warming occurs due to the profligate utilization of fossil fuels (Vakoch 54). The author

claims that environmental destruction comes from hierarchical thinking that is founded on
oppressive patriarchy. Therefore, to address the issue of environmental damage, people must
overcome hierarchical practices and thought patterns. The book also posits that women have
a role in determining the earth. In Octavia’s book, Laura comprehends that the solution to
environmental issues requires the abolition of societal injustices.
Laurea, Tesina Di. “Literature & Climate Change: When Fiction Becomes Reality.”
University of Padova, University of Padova, 2022, pp. 1–54.
The dissertation tries to bring the relationship between fiction and reality regarding
the issue of climate change. The author starts by providing the consequences of climate
change and the effect it will have on human survival. The article provides the historical issues
on climate change and ancient suspicions on the greenhouse effect and how international
bodies enforced laws and policies aimed to curb the issue. In addition, the author provides the
chronological events of how global warming has grown to become one of the challenges
affecting the world today. The article is critical in helping me understand climate change
since it provides graphical representations.
The author also compares the fiction and reality on issues regarding global warming.
The author achieves this by discussing a novel by Butler Parable of the Sower to provide the
relationship between the writing and issues affecting the world today. The author emphasises
the role of literature in discussing and raising alarm on the issues surrounding the climate
crisis globally (Laurea 34). The issues of global warming and social inequalities in the United
States have been discussed in detail. The article is essential in my understanding since it
provides statistical evidence which will be important in my understanding.
