Lesson Plan: Introducing Comparative Adjectives
Level: Intermediate
Time: Approximately 60 minutes
Aims: To introduce and practice the use of comparative adjectives
Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
1. Identify and understand comparative adjectives.
2. Use comparative adjectives accurately in spoken and written production.
Materials:
- Photographs of different objects or people (Task 1 and Task 3)
- Language model with comparative adjectives (Teach stage)
- Task sheets for both Task 1 and Task 3
Procedure:
1. Warm-up (5 minutes)
- Display a photograph of two objects or people and elicit comparative sentences from the
students.
- For example: "Compare these two objects. Which one is bigger?" Students may respond with "The
blue one is bigger than the red one."
2. Task 1 - Comparative Adjectives (15 minutes)
- Distribute the task sheets for Task 1 to each group of students.
- Explain the task: "In your groups, I will show you photographs of different objects or people.
Discuss and compare the objects or people using comparative adjectives."
- Show a series of photographs and allow groups sufficient time to discuss and come up with
comparative sentences.
- Monitor the groups' discussions and offer assistance as needed.
- After completion, ask each group to share some of their comparisons with the class.
3. Teach - Introducing Comparative Adjectives (10 minutes)
- Provide a language model that illustrates the correct use of comparative adjectives.
- Elicit examples from the model text to highlight the form and meaning of comparative adjectives.
- Discuss when and why speakers use comparative adjectives.
- Clarify any doubts and address common errors or misconceptions.
4. Task 2 - Comparative Adjectives Practice (20 minutes)
- Distribute the task sheets for Task 2 to each student.
- Explain the task: "Individually, complete the sentences using the comparative form of the
adjectives given."
- Set a time limit for completion (around 15 minutes).
- Monitor the students' progress and provide assistance as necessary.
- After completion, review the answers as a class.
5. Task 3 - Comparative Adjectives Extension (10 minutes)
- Show a new set of photographs to the class, focusing on different objects or people.
- Explain the task: "In your groups, discuss and compare the objects or people in the photographs
using comparative adjectives."
- Allow groups sufficient time to discuss and come up with comparative sentences.
- Monitor the groups' discussions and offer assistance as needed.
- After completion, ask each group to share some of their comparisons with the class.
6. Wrap-up and Feedback (10 minutes)
- Conduct a class discussion to review the use of comparative adjectives.
- Ask students to explain why they used specific comparative adjectives in their comparisons.
- Provide feedback on the students' performance and highlight areas of improvement.
Extensions/Adaptations:
- Encourage students to write short paragraphs or essays comparing two or more objects, people, or
places.
- Expand the speaking practice by having students compare and discuss famous personalities or their
favorite movies, books, or destinations using comparative adjectives.

students.
