5th edition Guide to the Intermediate Tests Welcome to the Headway 5th edition Intermediate Tests – the complete teacher resource for testing and continuous assessment, with materials that you can customize for your students and your teaching situation. The tests on the Teacher’s Resource Centre On the Teacher’s Resource Centre, you will find: • a Placement Test • a Unit Test for every unit • three Stop and Check Tests • two Progress Tests • five additional Skills Tests • an Exit Test. All the tests are provided as PDFs and as Word™ documents – the content is the same. You can print out the PDFs and use them as they are. If you want to adapt the tests, you can edit the Word™ documents and save them on your computer. There are two versions (A and B) of all the tests. If your students don’t copy each other, then you can just use the A tests. If your students do copy each other, then put them in pairs, one with an A test and one with a B test – it’s almost impossible for them to copy each other’s answers. (The A and B tests cover exactly the same material, but the questions have been reorganized.) Approximate timings for each of the tests has been listed below but these are guidelines only and may need to be adapted depending on the students you are using the tests with. All the tests can be photocopied freely for classroom use. They may not be sold without the Permission of Oxford University Press. Guidelines for adapting the tests You might want to add something extra you taught in class, remove something you decided to omit or even personalize the exercises. You can easily do this by adding, removing, or editing sections from the test. You might also want to: • put two tests together. For instance, if you want a test to cover grammar, vocabulary and skills, you could combine Stop and Check Test 1 with Skills Test 1. • make tests which only cover grammar or vocabulary. You might want to give your students a test on the grammar from Units 1, 2, and 3, so you could combine the grammar sections from the Unit Tests for these units. • make the layout compatible with other tests you use. • use the listening scripts provided and write extra comprehension or vocabulary questions. Remember to save your customized tests on your computer if you want to use them again. Placement Test 60 minutes The Placement Test is designed to estimate a student’s CEFR level and can be used to help you assess students’ level at the start of the course. The questions increase in difficulty, meaning that lower level students will find questions which Photocopiable Intermediate are beyond their current language level. Use the results of the test as an indication of which level of Headway you should use with students. Unit Tests 45 minutes There are 12 Unit Tests, one for each unit in the Student’s Book. Each test covers the main grammar and vocabulary points from the unit. Stop and Check Tests 45 minutes There are three Stop and Check Tests, revising the grammar and vocabulary from Units 1–4 (Stop and Check Test 1), 5–8 (Stop and Check Test 2), and 9–12 (Stop and Check Test 3). Progress Tests 45 minutes There are two Progress Tests, which cover Units 1–6 (Progress Test 1), and Units 6–12 (Progress Test 2). They can be used as mid-year and end-of-year tests. Skills Tests 105 minutes • 60 minutes for Reading and Writing • 45 minutes for Listening and Speaking The four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking are covered in these tests. They can be used independently to check students’ development in these areas or they can be combined with the Stop and Check Tests and Progress Tests to provide extended tests covering grammar, vocabulary and skills. The Skills Tests relate to the Student’s Book units in the following way: • Skills Test 1 covers Units 1–4 and so can be used after these units have been completed. It can be combined with Stop and Check Test 1. • Skills Test 2 covers Units 1–6 and so can be used after these units have been completed. It can be combined with Progress Test 1. • Skills test 3 covers Units 5–8 and so can be used after these units have been completed. It can be combined with Stop and Check Test 2. • Skills test 4 is for Units 9–12 and so can be used after these units have been completed. It can be combined with Stop and Check Test 3. • Skills test 5 is a final test and so covers units 1–12. It can be combined with Progress Test 2 or with the Exit Test. The scripts and audio can be found on the Teacher’s Resource Centre. Exit Test 60 minutes This is an extended test which covers all the grammar and vocabulary covered in Headway Intermediate. It can be used as an end-of-course test. Headway © Oxford University Press 2019
