Tsotsi chapter 2 – Informal Test
1.1 Discuss the character of Rosie who was sitting in the corner of the bar
that night.
 Rosie is a symbol of immorality; her drinking is out of control.
 She is physically and mentally abused by the gang.
 She being a victim of rape shows the degradation of society (in
decline), reminder of the horrific and terrible things that the gang
is capable of.

1.2 What disturbing truth do we learn about Tsotsi’s past?
 He has no memory of his past.

1.3 Critically discuss Tsotsi’s description of himself as “meaningless as a

handful of stones”.
 Tsotsi doesn’t have a positive self-image, he only knows life as
a criminal.
 Stones inflict harm, which is effective because he only inflicts
harm – he does not show any emotion. He is an extension of the
street.
1.4 What does Boston say to Tsotsi that send him over the edge?
 He said that everyone has a soul and can feel, and that Tsotsi
should fear the day he discovers his own.

 Boston does not think much of Die Aap and Butcher.
 He has trained as a teacher.
 He is the only one affected by Gumboot’s death, it bothers him a
lot.
