2 Overview
2.1
Overview of Flexi Multiradio BTS GSM/EDGE RF Module
(FXxx)
The Flexi Multiradio Radio Frequency Module (FXxx) or RF Module, is a 3-branch multicarrier, multi-standard radio transceiver module. The module consists of three independent branches, capable of transmitting and receiving signals of multiple radio technologies concurrently:
•
•
•
•
Up to 6 GSM carriers with 400 KHz minimum carrier separation
Up to 4 WCDMA carriers with 4.6 MHz minimum carrier separation
Multi-carrier LTE signal with 1.4 MHz, 3 MHz, 5 MHz, 10 MHz, 15 MHz, and 20 MHz
carrier bandwidth
Multi RAT operation with combination of GSM, WCDMA, and LTE
Each branch consists of a transmitter, two receiver chains, and front end software
tunable filters (STuF). FXxx is a 3U high module with an integrated, replaceable 3-fan
assembly for module cooling. The supported functions are:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Chaining up to three RF Modules with OBSAI RP3_01
2-way receive diversity in the receiver chains
Integrated antenna line supervision
MHA, Antenna Hopping, EGPRS2, and VAMOS support
Digital and control circuitry, optical interface, DC/DC power conversion, and other
necessary functionalities
Integrated DC line OVP, Class II rated to 5kA pulse (FXFB only)
Remote Electrical Tilt (RET) support (FXFB only)
Flexi Multiradio BTS GSM/EDGE modules are equipped with an integrated air guide
plate providing full thermal compliance without casings. This allows installation of the
modules without casings in Flexi cabinets and enclosed 19" racks. Casings and covers
are recommended in standalone 19" racks (no cabinet) for safety reasons. Casings are
not part of the FXxx delivery package. If the configuration requires casings, Flexi BTS
Module Casing (EMHA) kits must be ordered.
The Flexi Multiradio RF Module variants are:

Software tunable filters (STuF)
STuF is a mechanical filter which is tuned with a small step motor, controlled automatically by the BTS software. There is one STuF on each branch of the RF Module. STuF
has specific bandwidth on both RX and TX bands. The STuF tuning range covers the
whole band, therefore a tuning window can be allocated anywhere within the band.
When STuF is tuned, both RX and TX are tuned at the same time as RX and TX sides
are mechanically coupled together. STuF is tuned only when the carrier allocation
requires this. STuF center frequency is determined from TX & RX main frequency
requests and also from diversity frequency requests when diversity sharing is used
between the branches.
2.1.2
Digital predistortion (DAPD)
The reference signal for digital predistortion and RF power control is provided by predistortion RX path (PDRX). The power amplifier delivers the coupled and attenuated TX
signal to the PDRX. For digital pre-distortion and RF power control, this signal is atten-

Overview of Flexi Multiradio BTS GSM/EDGE RRH Module
(FHxx)
The Flexi Multiradio Radio Remote Radio Head (FHxx) or RRH, is a 2-branch multicarrier, multi-standard radio transceiver module. Each branch consists of a transmitter and
receiver chain. It is intended for outdoor mounting and optimized for feederless applications.
The module consists of two independent branches, capable of transmitting and receiving signals of multiple radio technologies concurrently:
•
•

The FHxx is installed on a pole or wall. Pole mounting kits supported by the FHxx are
Flexi Pole Mounting Kit (FPKA) and Pole Mounting Kit (VMPB). For wall installations,
the FHxx is mounted directly to the wall. The FHxx has no cooling fans, and relies on
convection cooling. To ensure proper cooling, FHxx should always be mounted in a
vertical orientation with connectors on the bottom side.

The TX output power tolerance (referred to as nominal maximum carrier power) is as
follows:
Normal conditions
≤ ± 0.8 dB
Over full TX RF (DAPD) bandwidth, ambient
temperature + 15 °C to + 30 °C (59 °F to 86 °F)
Extreme conditions
≤ ± 2.0 dB
Over full RF Module RF bandwidth, full

RF Module (FXxx) and RRH Module LED indications
7 RF Module (FXxx) and RRH Module LED indications
The Flexi Multiradio RF Module (FXxx) and Flexi RRH Module (FHxx) have two tricolour
LEDs on the front panel to indicate the operational status of the module and all fault conditions during operation. A blinking red LED does not always require removing the
module. See the LED status indications tables for information of LED status.
The Flexi Multiradio RF Module LEDs are:
•
•
Module Status - indicates the status of the RF Module core functional block
Fan/TX Status - indicates the fan and TX status
The Flexi Multiradio RRH Module LEDs are:
•
•
Module Status - indicates the status of the RRH Module core functional block
TX Status - indicates the TX status of the RRH Module
See Figure 1 RF Module (FXxx) front panel connectors and labels and RRH Module
(FHxx) interface connectors and labels for position of the LEDs on the RF Module and
RRH Module respectively.

Module Description

pin assignments
11.1
EAC connector pin assignments
The EAC connector on the RRH and RF modules is an RJ45 connector with 4 input
lines. It is typically used for monitoring local alarms when the RRH or RF Module is
located far away from the System Module. The EAC connector can also be used for
monitoring FPMA or FPDA alarms when these modules are used for supplying power to
the remote RRH or RF Module. The EAC alarm lines are configured with the 2G Flexi
BTS Site Manager during commissioning. They cannot be configured with the BSC. The
cable connected to the EAC connector is not auto-detected.
Alarms are monitored by the RRH and RF Module and reported to the System Module
via the optical cable. Alarm lines must be grounded to test the alarms (if configured as
“Closed when active”).
