War Experiences
Ms. Hiley
World History- World War 2
Challenge
You are a historian who will
be presenting at a World War 2
symposium(a conference or
meeting to discuss a
particular subject). You are
going to research a specific
social group (like African
Americans, women, Jews, etc.)
to understand what their
experiences were during World
War 2 and what factors shaped
this experience. You need to
gather information and present
it in an engaging format.
Engage
Complete this social identity wheel. (You will do
this with Ms. Hiley) Our social identities affect
the way we are perceived and treated by society, it
affects our experiences. In your journals, write
down what social identities you have.
Pick one
social identity and explain how it shapes your
experiences.
The Red Tails was the name given to a group of
African American pilots during World War 2. Check
out this trailer for the movie based on the Red
Tails.
Being African American at a time where there was still segregation in
America meant that these men had a very different experience than white
soldiers. When we learn about history, it’s important to look at the
wide range of experiences people had during an era/event.

You will be assigned a
specific social group to
research. You will use this
graphic organizer to help you
take notes on your topic. You
may also want to check out the
requirements for the
presentation you will make
with this information.
You can use your textbook,
classroom books, and
information from appropriate
sites. These are a good
starting point:

Share one copy of the graphic organizer amongst your group and work
together to find the information you need to become experts on your
topic.

You will use your research to do the following:
1. Create a google slides
presentation, prezi, screencast,video,
or other format of presentation
detailing the experience of your
assigned social group.
2. You will present your research to
the class as part of our World War 2
symposium.
3. After listening to your fellow
historians’ presentations, you will be
creating a blog post on WordPress
comparing and contrasting the experience
of the social group you researched and
that of one of your classmates. Be sure
to include:
● A thoughtful title
● Images or graphs
● At least 2 paragraphs of writing
4. You will then comment on 2 classmates’ posts with any insights they
