The Declaration of Martial Law
Alarm by the dangerous situation in the country, President Marcos signed Proclamation 1081 on
September 21, 1972, which came into force on September 22, 1962, placing the whole country under
martial law.
Marcos was going to use a serious of bombings in Metro Manila, including the 1971 Plaza
Miranda bombing, as a justification for his takeover and subsequent authoritarian rule. In his own
diary, Marcos wrote on September 14, 1972 that he imformed the military that he would proceed
with proclaiming Martial Law.
With a rough estimation, around 70,000 people were imprisoned, around 34,000 were tortured,
and around 3,300 people were killed during the regime. These numbers just prove that ten thousands
of Filipinos experienced injustices, hardships, and obstacles under Ferdinand Marcos, Sr.
The main reason why Martial Law was declared so President Marcos can stay in power past the
two Presidential Constitution of 1935; and as a technique for covering up the ill-gotten wealth of
Marcos, his family, and his cronies.
