The Influential role of Social Media 1 What is the problem with Social Media? Well, they are multiple... Popularity of Social media ● 3.96 billion people currently use social media worldwide, up almost double from 2.07 billion in 2015 ● Globally, the average time a person spends on social media a day is 2 hours 24 minutes; if someone signed up at 16 and lived to 70, they would spend 5.7 years of their life on it ● 50.64% of the 7.77 billion people in the world use social media, of eligible audiences aged 13+, there is 63% are active users With the still growing popularity of social media platforms some problems arise. 3 With the rising popularity of Social Media the problems that arise from it become more and more visible and common. Some prominent magazines such as Lifespan, Men’s Health and even the BBC have published articles that prove the negative effect social media has. Examples of these negative effects are Addiction, Fear of missing out, and the spread of misinformation 4 2 What is our goal? ● Try and tell people our age the objective and factological “truth” about social media ● Spread awareness about the subconscious damage that some social media usage might cause ● Try and introduce the concept of “fake news” to our friends ● Introduce some strategies that might help the average person create a habit in checking information online. 6 3 Step by step solution ● ● ● ● ● Once a person reads an article he or she should think about the validity of the information within the source Create a presentation about fake news in social media information from the flyers+more information about the topic and the event The flyers will spread awareness about fake news on social media and they will advertise a lecture held in the concert hall Talk to the dean and ask him to let us use the concert hall Present him our idea and discuss whether it would be okay. (similar to our 19.04 advisory meeting where we discussed the usage of social media and its consequences) Prepare a speech connected to the information in the flyers. Provide examples of fake news so people can distinguish them easier from real news. Present the speech + presentation. 8 4 Our budget $$$ Flyers We have designed flyers in order to promote the event organized by us. The flyers are designed by us and since the information is free online and our thought processes is also free we would just need the money for the printing on the flyers. This comes a bit shorter than 20 lv. 10 5 Challenges for the project and consequences from our solution. ... Challenges ⊹ Organizing the event during a pandemic ⊹ Getting the attention of our classmates and friends ⊹ Fitting the event in between tests and event in hopes of achieving maximum attendance Consequences ⊹ Hopefully motivating our friends to try and reflect on their use of social media ⊹ Make them a bit more curious on the topic 12 ;) Thank you for your attention “ Works cited: https://backlinko.com/social-media-users ourworldindata.org/rise-of-social-media 2020.www.conference-board.org/retrievefile.cfm?filename=TCB-Fake-News-Awarenes s-Attitudes-Actions-of-Advertisers1.pdf&type=subsite www.governmentevents.co.uk/event/the-tackling-misinformation-conference-2021/ www.grin.com/document/358350. www.ukessays.com/essays/media/effects-of-social-media-on-everyday-life.php. disruptive.Asia/social-media-more-powerful-than-governments/. www.forbes.com/sites/alisonescalante/2020/08/03/research-finds-social-media-users-are-more-likely-tobelieve-fake-news/. 14
