(https://mytdsb02.tdsb.on.ca/+CSCO+0h75676763663A2F2F6670756262 NAC 10 Forest Valley offers experiential opportunities for students to gain awareness of Indigenous perspectives and pedagogy and develop an understanding of the land and our connections to it. Using an Indigenous lens, this program will explore the land of Forest Valley with the intention of fostering student’s connections to the natural environment. This immersive program is flexible and interdisciplinary and has the potential to be tailored to the needs and interests of the visiting class. Students can have the opportunity to have a cookout lunch which visiting teachers organize prior to the trip, and teachers can choose to cook bannock over the fire. Possible activities can include: - Classes can choose an art program such as watercolour, sketching or printmaking; - Explore the teachings of the medicine wheel through a guided hike and tour of Indigenous medicine garden and the natural history of the many medicinal plants on the land. Students can learn how to responsibly harvest cedar and make nutritious cedar tea. Discuss the importance of Traditional Ecological Knowledge and wisdom held in the diversity of life in the forest; - Weather permitting, take a guided hike on snowshoes and learn about the ingenuity of the construction of snowshoes and other contributions to the social and cultural fabric of Canadian society; - Inquire into the historical, cultural and political significance of Wampum Belts. - Explore the oral tradition of the 7 Grandfathers Teachings through a guided hike and observation of the land, animals, water and forest. - Learn about Inuit tradition of nalukataq,or blanket toss, developed in the Northern region of Turtle Island. Build trust and community as students take turns as they learn how to safely participate in this activity. - Delve into the origins of Canada’s national summer sport, lacrosse through a hands on exploration of the historical and cultural relevance of the game. Students will have the opportunity to try or develop their lacrosse skills.
