But the crows made things difficult for the hunters because they were frlends of the buffaloes. Whenever they watched hunters approaching a buffalo herd, they flew to their friends and, sitting between their horns, warned them: "Caw, caw, caw, cousins, hunters are coming. They are creeping up through that valley over there. They are coming behind that hill. Watch out! Caw, caw, caw!" Hearingthis, the buffaloes would run, and people lived in constant hunger. Among the crows was their huge leader, twice as big as the others. A wise old chief suggested they capture the big white crow and teach him a lesson. He brought out a large buffalo skin, with the head and horns stil'l attached. He put it on the back of a brave young man and said to him, "Sneak among the buffaloes. They will think you are one of them and you can capture the big white c4ow." Disguised as a buffalo, the young man crept among the hbrd as if he were grazing. Then the hunters marched out from their camp after him. As they got closer to the herd, the crows came flying as usual. They were warning the buffaloes: "Caw, caw, caw, caw, cousins, the hunters are comingto kill you. Caw, caw, caw!" As usual, all the buffaloes ran off, except the young hunter in disguise. Then the big white crow came gliding down, sat on the young rnan's shoulders and, flapping his wings, said, "Caw, caw caw, brother, are you deaf? The hunters are close by, just over the hill. Save yourselfl" The young brave hunter came out from the underthe buffalo skin and grabbed the crow by his legs. He tied the crow's feet to a stone so that the crow could not escape. Then the people sat in a council. "What shall we do with the crow who has made us go hungry again and again?" One angry hunter answered: "l will burn him upl" Before anybody could stop him, he snatched the crow away and pushed him into the council fire ring. The crow's ties burned and he managed to fly out of the fire. But some of his feathers were burned and he was badly hurt. Though he was still big, he was no longer white. "Caw, caw, caw," he cried, flying away as quickly as he could. He was saying: "l will never do it again. I will stop warning the buffaloes, and so u,'iii aii the crow nation. I promise!"
