Live in peace with each other. 14 And we urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are idle and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak, be patient with everyone. 15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always strive to do what is good for each other and for everyone else. 16 Rejoice always, 17 pray continually, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not treat prophecies with contempt 21 but test them all; hold on to what is good, 22 reject every kind of evil. PART 2: ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS: 1. Consider the subheading for this passage. Why is it given this title? What is the context for these verses, and who is the original intended audience? 2. What is the most common type of sentence in this passage? Why do you think Paul chose this type of sentence? Is it effective as a form of communication? 3. Considering Paul as the speaker, do you think that he had proper authority to offer these words to his primary audience? Do you think he has proper authority to offer these words to you, his secondary audience? PART 3: CREATE A LIST 1. Review the passage and underline all of the commands (verbs + included words). How many commands do you find in this passage? 2. Work with your group to select the commands that you feel apply most specifically or significantly to you as a secondary audience in this setting (as a student in a high school English classroom). Indicate your selections by circling them in the passage. 3. Make a list of “Class Rules” based on Paul’s words to the Thessalonians. Your group will decide how many rules are appropriate. 4. Once you’ve compiled your list, use a computer to create a neat and attractive Google Doc with your list. Include a title and a reference to the scripture. Use colors and images to make your list creative! 5. Submit your Doc to Google classroom (only one per group) and turn this completed page (everyone needs to complete it) into the appropriate class bin (by the hall window).
