Olivia Marin Advertising Assignment Name: Rolling Stone Issue: 007 October/November 2022 Pages: 162 Full-page ads: 17 # of Full-page ads with men in it: 3 The first ad showcased in this issue of Rolling Stone is a Montblanc backpack campaign, boating the words “What moves you, makes you: Cillian Murphy with his Extreme 3.0 backpack.” We see a tall, slender white man with a cool blue jacket paired with an all-black outfit. Here the man is presented as collected, and put together, only being complete with his leather Montblanc backpack that actually feels out of place with the rest of his get-up. I think the theme here is the classy style of men who were this brand and standard to upkeep. When the text uses the phrase “...makes you.” there is pressure placed on the viewer or consumer at that moment to appear as flawless as this man is presented as. The second ad showcased in this magazine is a full-page Virgin Atlantic advertisement. “Virgin Atlantic, fly at your own altitude”. Here we see a man with a small face tattoo, nose rings, colorful rings, and jewelry, along with a patterned suit, red pants, and orange tie. Here, I think the idea is that Virgin Atlantic wants you to be yourself when you fly with them, they want everyone to feel comfortable just as they are. This differs greatly from the previous ad as it showcases the opposite message. Be whoever you wish, we want your business from you no matter what you look like! This man clearly has his own style and way of expressing himself and Virgin Atlantic wants readers to know that that’s their ideal customer. The third and final ad in this very adless magazine is one from a brand called CDLP. I have personally have not heard of this brand and this advertisement was my first introduction to the company. The ad shows a man shirtless, with a rob on. He is standing outside with sunglasses, in front of a statue. The statue appears to be some philosopher or smarter figure as he is holding a scroll and has a beard. The man himself has a 6-pack and long hair with a very high male beauty standard look to him. The only text on this ad is “CDLP cdlp.com” which is very simplistic and leaves room for a lot of interpretation. This ad oozes cool and pushes the reader to want to know more and be “a part of the club”. This is most likely the main reason they included their website only in the advertisement without anything else. To know more you have to completely dive into their setting. They want their customer to be the best of the best as their model is seemingly a perfect male figure they chose to represent their brand.
