QUIZ 6 Solution
(Duration: 30 minutes)
Name:
Student No:
(10 Marks): The magnesium alloy tube AB (Em=44.7 GPa) is capped with a rigid plate. The
gap between E and end C of the aluminum alloy (Ea=68.9 GPa) solid circular rod CD is 0.2 mm
when the temperature is at 30° C. The co-efficient of thermal expansion for magnesium alloy
is 26 x 10-6/oC and aluminum alloy is 24 x 10-6/oC. Determine;
a) The normal stress developed in the tube and the rod if the temperature rises to 80° C.
b) The highest temperature to which it can be raised without causing yielding either in the
tube (σy,m=150 MPa) or the rod (σy,a=220 MPa).
Note: Neglect the thickness of the rigid cap.
