Setting: While checking the student’s exam
Incident description:
After checking the 1st Periodical Exam of my advisory class, Grade 10-S4, I was able to ascertain that the
level of English proficiency skills of most Grade 10 students was below average. However, one of the
students not only received failed remarks on the exam, but is also noticeably unable to comprehend
even the instructions of the exam, resulting to zero points. For context, half of the exam already has
choices provided for them but ROY, the aforementioned student, was unable to understand even the
directions and wrote irrelevant answers.
Based on what I have learned, ROY’s family struggles financially. This prompts his father, RONNIE, to
take ROY along to fish at dawn. Exhausted, he is usually absent as he can no longer walk to school (ROY
usually walks to school & back to his home after dismissal).
A couple of days later, I talked to ROY due to his irregular attendance and lack of submitted outputs. I
was able to confirm my suspicions that his academic problems were mainly caused by financial
problems.
Before sending him back to his seat, I told him that us, teachers, are willing to help students like him. He
replied in a gloomy tone, “Sorry po sir. Salamat po.”
Interpretation:
The student has financial problems which greatly affects his academic performance. Due to his family’s
financial status, he is usually unable to attend classes which reflects on his exams and other school
activities.
Recommendation:
The student needs remedial classes and constant monitoring/counselling on the importance of
education.
