INFORMATIVE SPEECH ASSIGNMENT (With visual aid)
The general purpose of the informative speech is to inform. Therefore, it is necessary for you to
design your speech so that your audience is motivated to listen. In addition to getting your audience’s
attention for this speech, you will also need to create a reason for them to listen and fully satisfy that
need once you have created it.

something.
You have four options for this speech
Speech about an Object, Person or Place (a person, place or thing)
Speech about an Event (a historical review)
Speech about a Concept (a belief, theory or idea)
Speech about a process (A process speech shows an audience how to do
Your speech should be easy to follow. You should select as your topic something you know well or
something you are interested in learning more about. You will want to select a topic that is detailed
enough to fill the time limit, but not so complex that your audience gets lost or loses interest.
Specific requirements for the presentation are as follows:
1. Speech should be 5 to 7 minutes long.
2. You should deliver the speech extemporaneously. You will be allowed to use your outline or
note cards. Your speech may not be written out, and the note cards should contain an outline
Only..
3. Your speech should be well organized (e.g. chronological, topical, spatial, etc.)
4. It should have a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Ideas should be grouped in two to
four main points (max. 5) and be clear to your audience.
5. Use a meaningful visual aid to assist your audience in understanding your speech.
6. Focus your speech to create audience interest and involvement. Select a topic which reflects
something unique about your interests or abilities. Pick something you know well.
7. Attempt to be creative in some way whether it is how you design your visual aid, or the
approach you take to your topic. Sometimes thinking of ways to "have fun" with your topic
stimulates creative thoughts.
8. Prepare a typed outline of your speech using the format required.
Informative Speech outline with visual aid
I. Introduction 5pts
A. Attention getter/connect to audience (what you will say to make us interested and make us
care). You can use any of the attention getting strategies that we discussed in class.
B. You will also need to create a reason for us to listen and fully satisfy that need once you have
created it. You think your topic is important, why is it important to us?
C. Establish credibility (tell us why we should listen to you/what makes you an expert)
D. Preview of the main points (tell us what you’ll teach us)
II. Body 10pts

2.
C. Etc.

III. Conclusion 5pts

C. Create a clinch. You need to end in style just like you started. Again, you can choose to use any
of the strategies used for attention getting.
Most Common Problems:







Poor Eye contact: Be sure you look at the audience most of the time as opposed to looking at
your visuals
Dead space: Make sure that you have something to say in the times when you are mixing,
cutting, and demonstrating.
Too Complicated: Make sure that it is simple enough for the audience to learn in a short period
of time. Some topics can rarely be taught in 7 minutes.
Audience Lag: If the audience is working along with you, they can slow you down and cause
you to go over time.
Not Having Supplies Ready: You’ll be surprised how long it takes to open a can of beans
during a speech. Anything with a plastic wrapper becomes nearly impossible to open when you
are nervous
Research: You need to say, according to….. at least three times in your speech. Be sure your
research is on your outline so if I miss it in your speech, I can check your outline and give you
credit. For example, “according to Dr. Johnson, nutritional specialist…”
Practice your speech before you actually give it. Time it to make sure it fits the time limit.
Remember: you get penalized for being under or overtime.
