To maintain their currency, all Standards are periodically reviewed, and new editions are published. Between editions, amendments may be issued. Standards may also be withdrawn. It is important that readers assure themselves they are using a current Standard, which should include any amendments which may have been published since the Standard was purchased. Detailed information about joint Australian/New Zealand Standards can be found by visiting the Standards Australia web site at www.standards.com.au or Standards New Zealand web site at www.standards.co.nz and looking up the relevant Standard in the on-line catalogue. Alternatively, both organizations publish an annual printed Catalogue with full details of all current Standards. For more frequent listings or notification of revisions, amendments and withdrawals, Standards Australia and Standards New Zealand offer a number of update options. For information about these services, users should contact their respective national Standards organization. We also welcome suggestions for improvement in our Standards, and especially encourage readers to notify us immediately of any apparent inaccuracies or ambiguities. Please address your comments to the Chief Executive of either Standards Australia International or Standards New Zealand at the address shown on the back cover. This Standard was issued in draft form for comment as DR 95315.. A2 The objective of this Standard is to provide general requirements for portable fire extinguishers other than aerosol type, the requirements for which are specified in another Standard. This is a free 9 page sample. Access the full version online. This Standard refers to materials, methods of manufacture and performance of the extinguisher and any associated compressed gas container. The original publications for the fire extinguisher Standards were AS A31 and AS A32 in 1937 (with later editions), AS A45 in 1963 and AS A163 in 1968. AS A137 and AS A138 were published in 1963 with a second edition in 1976 and redesignated as follows: AS 1841 1842 1844 1845 1846 1847 1848 Portable fire Portable fire Portable fire Portable fire Portable fire Portable fire Portable fire extinguishers—Water (gas-container) type extinguishers—Water (stored-pressure) type extinguisher—Foam (gas-container) type extinguisher—Foam (stored-pressure) type extinguisher—Powder type extinguisher—Carbon dioxide type extinguisher—Halon type Specific requirements for individual types of fire extinguishers are given in Parts 2 to 8. Selection and location of portable fire extinguishers in Australia is in accordance with AS 2444, Portable fire extinguishers and fire blankets—Selection and location. 3 AS/NZS 1841.1:1997 Maintenance and servicing of portable fire extinguishers in Australia are maintained in accordance with AS 1851.1, Maintenance of fire protection equipment, Part 1: Portable fire extinguishers and fire blankets. In New Zealand they are maintained in accordance with NZS 4503, The distribution, installation and maintenance of hand operated fire fighting equipment for use in buildings. Guidance on servicing of portable fire extinguishers is given in AS 3676 Portable fire extinguishers—Guide to servicing. A2 Statements expressed in mandatory terms in notes to tables are deemed to be requirements of this Standard. This is a free 9 page sample. Access the full version online. The term ‘normative’ has been used in this Standard to define the application of the appendix to which it applies. A ‘normative’ appendix is an integral part of a Standard.
