CO2 Fire Extinguishers

CO2 Fire Extinguishers
Portable fire extinguishers are your first line
of defence when you’re confronted with
any fire. But using the wrong type of
extinguisher could easily expose you to
further danger. Where energised electrical
equipment is involved — in an office
environment, for example — it is
dangerous to attempt to extinguish a fire
using a water, wet chemical or foam
extinguisher.
Carbon dioxide is a non-conductive and non-corrosive
agent, which fights fires by reducing the amount of
oxygen available to fuel the fire.
The carbon dioxide is stored at high pressure in a liquid
form within the fire extinguisher. A black band, fitted
around the top section of the cylinder, distinguishes
Carbon Dioxide extinguishers from other extinguisher
types.
Carbon Dioxide extinguishers may also be used on
small fires involving flammable and combustible
liquids.

Australian Standard AS 2444 - 2001 recommends that
Carbon Dioxide (CO2) type extinguishers are used for
protection of significant switchboards [clause 4.4.2] and
are the preferred extinguisher type for fires involving
energised electrical equipment [clause B7.6 suitability].
