Introduction
MAIP LIMITED is 100% locally owned and a registered company under Investment Promotions
Authority of Papua New Guinea since 1984. The company has been operating for the last 35
years, specializing in the coffee business, mainly Arabica variety in the areas of growing and
processing.
Processed Parchment and Wet Cherry Coffee are then sold to nationally-based local buyers and
exporting companies in Mt. Hagen and Goroka. This has been ongoing for a longer period of
time due to hardships with funding to establish a Dry (Green Bean) Mill to process its own
parchment beans into green beans ready for export.
Take into account that the plantations (x7) were run down including the Wet Coffee Mill before
2008. In 2008, the plantations and the Wet Mill were in better and improved conditions and
lifted from being run down after funding received from the Independent State of Papua New
Guinea. Rehabilitation measures have however been taken to have the plantations and wet
factory back on track again.
Company History
The Managing Director and owner of the company is Mr. Dokta Maip, who hails from the Yamka
Tribe living at Mt. Ambra Village bordering Dei and Hagen Central Districts in the Western
Highlands Province. Mr. Dokta Maip is illiterate and cannot read or write. He left schooling when
he was in 3rd grade at Mun Catholic Community School, after the Second World War.
The Maip Coffee Projects (7 of them) are located between Mt. Ambra and Ogelbeng . The Maip
No. 1, Maip No. 4, Maip No. 5, Maip No. 6 and No. 7 are located on the customary land whils t
Maip No. 2 and Maip No.3 are located on State land. The initial Coffee Project (Maip No. 1) was
established in 1984 after securing a K80,000 bank loan from the then Agriculture Bank (now
NDB), and employed only 10 labourers, and Mr. Maip himself was the supervisor. The loan was
managed by coffee management company known as Matunal or UO Management Company
engaged by then Agriculture Bank. After completing the loan repayments in 1992, Mr. Maip
refused to borrow again from the Bank due to higher bank interest rate and fees. He reinvested
the sales proceeds from cherry coffee in developing another coffee project known as Maip No.
2, and again another one recently known as Maip No. 7 in 2002.
The Company currently employs more than 3,200 labourers (including seasonal). The labourers
are from other provinces including Chimbu, Eastern Highlands, Southern Highlands, Enga,
Jiwaka, Hela, Morobe, Madang, Sepik, and Western Highlands.
Mr Maip is regarded by the surrounding community as a Tribal and Paramount Chief of the
Yamka Tribe and the Anda Akelamp tribes within the Hagen Central District. His accorded chiefly
status is for a fact that he attends to community activities and take part in solving issues
affecting the community in terms of compensation payments, bride prices, church activities ,
school fee payments and other similar issues of concern.
